As the holidays approach, many of us dig up decorations, recipes and memories of times past. It can be bittersweet - remembering people who have touched us, and are now gone. I think sharing memories of these great people makes them shine brighter in our lives. At this time of year, when we hunker down against the dark and gather in the gifts of the harvest, it's fitting to be thankful for the people who made us what we are. This swap will be a note about someone who was wonderful in your life, no matter how long you knew them. A favorite teacher; a childhoold friend; an older or younger relative - someone who touched your life. Tell your partner about them and what made them special. Along with your note, send a small item related to your memories. For example, my Great Aunt Beatriz lived into her 90s and was a remarkable person. She taught in one room schoolhouses in Indiana, and in her 70s joined the Peace Corps and went to Africa. She followed the planets, ran a snow plow in the winter, was passionate about human rights, and when she finally decided it was time to retire to a group home, loved to go into another wing to "Cheer up the old people!" She adored crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp, so I would send a book of crosswords along with my note about her. You can make or buy the item which goes with your note, so this can be an inexpensive but meaningful swap. I hope you'll join. |
