Description:

By the end of this swap, we all are going to be richer! Begining January 1st, for every week of the year we are going to save that amount of money. There are 52 weeks in a year. So, for the first week we will save one dollar. For the twentieth week, twenty dollars added to the cash cow. For the forty-second week, we will put forty two dollars in the stash...and well, you can do the math. Over the next year, we will blog here about this journey of wealth. Now, where you keep this money is solely up to you. We will lean on one another here for encouragement....and discipline! Who needs the lottery? One year from now we're going to have pesos all over the place!

i think i'll go to Paris....

savethescraps4me 10/21/2011 #

Somebody do the math quick.

savethescraps4me 10/21/2011 #

$1378.00??

Azed 10/22/2011 #

i bought a new Tirelire* moneybox ^^

thehurriedmommy 10/22/2011 #

any thoughts as to where you're going to hide your stash? i'm only telling the dog about it!! hehehehehehe :)

pinkrenegade 10/23/2011 #

This is such a terrific idea.

sgjolinar 10/24/2011 #

Great idea!! <3 And Paris is so worth it!

Kelly627 10/29/2011 #

Hmmmmm Since I collect piggy banks, I guess I will just split up the weeks between all the piggs!

mynursecoach 10/29/2011 #

This is a great idea and will keep us accountable.

fowlowl 11/ 2/2011 #

What do we do with our partner?

clkea 11/ 5/2011 #

This will be great fun! What will we be doing for our partners and how will we be rated? Looking forward to January 1st! I'm going to have to think about where I will stashing it...someplace that I won't forget!!!!!!

pinkrenegade 11/ 6/2011 #

This swap is on my watchlist and I keep thinking about it, especially in terms of the last part of the year. From week 42 to week 45 we have to put away $174. From week 48 to week 51 we put away $198. I love the looks of those figures, but I don't make a lot of money and it's Christmas time. I won't be able to save and buy that years gifts. Does that affect our partner in any way? Is that like flaking if I can't complete it?

thehurriedmommy 11/ 6/2011 #

at the end of the swap you will email your partner about how you fared in your efforts. i would think that for any honest effort we all will come out with a 5. this swap is going to make all of us richer...and it will take some discipline. we will blog here when the going gets tough. there is a great reward at the end of this, and i believe we all here can do it. this swap requires a behaviour change in our spending. it can be done. personally, all gifts will come from the dollar store begining with this swap, and there is no shame in that. everything will be fine. :)

fowlowl 11/ 6/2011 #

Thank you for clearing this up for me!

pinkrenegade 11/ 6/2011 #

Thank you @thehurriedmommy I will do my best. :o)

user6937 11/ 9/2011 #

Sounds like a good challenge - for those of you who are worried about the end of the swap, why not put some extra away during the first few weeks? It all balances out in the end :)

etherealgirl 11/15/2011 #

I really want to try this try being the key word here.

So we are not having partners or getting rated ?

thehurriedmommy 11/18/2011 #

you are getting RICHER which is, i think, a better deal than being rated...but yes, you will be rated. go back and read my entry here from 11/6/11

smmarrty 11/20/2011 #

I am thinking that I will use a small notebook to keep track of my savings (and add a little more on the weeks that I'm able), so that in December, I'll have some notes to refer to.

sosiejude 11/21/2011 #

Im in i will have to go with exchange rate as i will be in serling UK pounds!

thehurriedmommy 12/ 2/2011 #

how many of you are going to save extra the first few, easy weeks?

thehurriedmommy 12/ 7/2011 #

less than a month to go guys!! :)

structuredchaos 12/ 7/2011 #

This sounds interesting and fun, and If I do join I would think I would be one of the ones saving extra in the beginning :)

blackbird4 12/ 8/2011 #

I'm self employed and I can have some bad weeks ,so from the very start I'll have to some more per week, then I would hope toimake up for the later months

thehurriedmommy 12/ 9/2011 #

@blackbird4 i'm in the same boat. like you, i will save more in the begining to offset those bad weeks, but, we all here can do it. i know we can. unless we inherit money, the road to wealth always call for behaviour change and discipline. i think too we all are going to learn a lot about ourselves during this swap.

thehurriedmommy 12/ 9/2011 #

even without discipline, lottery winnings can be squandered before our eyes. we can do this everyone!! :)

blackbird4 12/11/2011 #

I tried to work out the maths is it around 30ish a week???

bookwormAL 12/12/2011 #

This is going to be a challenge. Hope I can do it!

leilx 12/15/2011 #

It is $106/month, if you add it all up and divide by 52 weeks. I think I might just up my auto withdraw from my accout at the beginning of the month by that much. It will be a bit hard but worth it. It would be more fun to do it the piggy bank route but much less secure!

leilx 12/15/2011 #

$26.5/week for those of you interested in weekly calculations.

leilx 12/15/2011 #

One other thought...maybe there could be more partners? Since it is email it could be a bunch of partners. You may also want to modify the swap to show the email requirement so it is official.

katara 12/15/2011 #

Perhaps you could start an "official facebook page" or something similar for this swap. That way we can all post our progress there. We could share money-saving tips, give out frugal-living tips, share coupon sites etc. I really think that could be awesome!

blackbird4 12/16/2011 #

Great idea Katara-I would love tips as I'm useless at saving

thehurriedmommy 12/17/2011 #

we will continue to blog and tip here. for all 55 who are watching, go ahead and make that commitment! you can do it! if i can do it with the trials i am going through, you can too!

thehurriedmommy 12/17/2011 #

can i get some feedback as to some of your plans with the money? will you invest, keep it going for 2013, give it to charity, pay down debt? let us know.

thehurriedmommy 12/17/2011 #

i will give a portion off the top to my church (God) of course! i will definitely give some to our favorite charity (the innocence project), but with the rest, i'm not sure. any feedback?

thehurriedmommy 12/17/2011 #

i've never been to Paris and i understand international travel still offer many value trips. if i do go, i will post my trip's pics on flickr. :)

thehurriedmommy 12/17/2011 #

i have decided that i am going to stash the money in a jar. i know i'm running the risk of having it stolen or dipping into it...but, i am motivated by what i can SEE. i am not anticipating any of the above to come to pass and will keep an honest journeling here of this experience. i think i would feel 'far removed' from this swap by stashing it in an account. feedback?

abbyaguas 12/17/2011 #

This is definitely challenging!!!

smmarrty 12/17/2011 #

I like the idea of $26.50 per week. Then you'll have over $100. the first month!

smmarrty 12/17/2011 #

And we could start a Yahoo chat group (less public, more private) to talk about coupons, tips, ideas for saving, etc.

NinaDias 12/18/2011 #

Let's try! :-)

showniez 12/19/2011 #

This is a great swap ideas :) Perhaps we should make a group for this!!! From there we can put all the tips and support each other until the end of the year...We can also show off our jar/tin/money box/whatever we used to put the money inside..

blackbird4 12/19/2011 #

Do'nt know what I will do with the money-probably loads of cosmetics and clothes -maybe w/e away and some to a donkey sanctuary

DonnaLeeDesigns 12/19/2011 #

Just came across this super idea. I love @showniez suggestion of a special group for all who join the swap - could then post updates on how we are doing, lots of tips and encouragement to others.

Personally I like the idea of the same amount each week - I am on disability, so saving large amounts is difficult. I have a bank with a sewing machine on the top - doesn't hold much money, but I will deposit every month into a savings account - not accessible on my debit card. Not sure what I would spend it on - will have to think about that

pengrafyx 12/21/2011 #

If matching the amount to the week is tricky ($1 in week 1, $2 in week 2), you could keep a sheet of paper in your jar or piggy bank with the numbers 1 to 52 written on it, and then cross off each number as you put in that amount. So if you have a good week and collect $52, you cross off that number, and it's off your list! It could even add to the sense of it being a game ... as you get to the end of the year, you might have odd ones to cross off, and it'd be fun aiming for one of your "missing" numbers. Just a thought ... :)

thehurriedmommy 12/21/2011 #

i am competitive and will try and out save all of you! (smile) should there be a profile surprise for the person who saves the most? i'm not concerned about lying, because really, none of us can lie to ourselves.

showniez 12/22/2011 #

i love the idea from @pengrafyx

clkea 12/24/2011 #

I'm with @showniez I love the suggestion by @pengrafyx It would be somewhat like a game to me!

thehurriedmommy 12/24/2011 #

just a few days left. i got an awesome savings jar recently! :)

Kelly627 12/26/2011 #

can't wait, I actually got a new piggy bank from my secret santa at work, I will use that one to save!

showniez 12/27/2011 #

@pengrafyx I already write the number of 1-52 on a bullet stickers :) Every week I pay, I will take out the stickers and stick it on the money tin! I think I will grab the bigger number after the payday :P

thehurriedmommy 12/27/2011 #

tick tock, tick tock. wealth is coming!

punkydoodle 12/28/2011 #

I am quite excited about this! I am stashing mine in an old wine bottle so I won't be able to take out of it until the end when I will have to break it to get all of the money out since the opening is so small.

thehurriedmommy 12/29/2011 #

getting excited???????????????? i am!!!!

lissame 12/29/2011 #

So has anyone set up the yahoo group for this yet, as I am in on this being set up as a yahoo group and less public, I could set up the yahoo group and post the link here and then anyone interested could join...not trying to step on toes to the the host, which if you join could be made co owner of the yahoo group...just a thought...

lissame 12/29/2011 #

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/52weeksavingsplan/

above is the yahoo group that I made for this swap it is much better to converse in private about money than in public just my opinion

ariesjle 12/29/2011 #

Okay, I joined because it sounds like such a great idea! I will be challenged for sure! It will definitnely take discipline!! I can't wait =)

ohyeahblee 12/31/2011 #

I'm super excited for this and love all the ideas on how to mix it up and make saving a little more fun

thehurriedmommy 12/31/2011 #

all 'watchers' need to become 'savers'. you can do it! come on! :)

Leejas72 01/ 1/2012 #

I've just recently joined and this will be my first "swap" I'm very excited to do this and hope the Holiday times don't trip me up. Good luck to you all!

Nastee 01/ 1/2012 #

so glad i didn't miss this swap. i saw it before and had been meaning to join. this will definitely be a challenge for me. i even suggested to my boyfriend that he do it too. the two of us can use the money for a vacation for us. LOVE IT!!!

and i will be taking all the suggestions above into consideration.

Nastee 01/ 1/2012 #

@pengrafyx i like your idea. i might just put all 52 numbers in a jar and pull out a number then add that amount to the jar. hopefully the big numbers come out before the holidays. lol

thehurriedmommy 01/ 1/2012 #

ok. its on! remember, this is a journey of discipline, which leads to wealth. all of us can do it! i know we can!

cynaemon 01/ 1/2012 #

I can only commit to .50 cents a day unless things drastically change for the better this year, but I am in. I think it will be more the spirit of doing this and keeping it up, and I will still be richer by the end of the year.

My cats used to save all my pennies in a big crayon bank. One year they saved $32, and used it to help kitties in shelters.

thehurriedmommy 01/ 1/2012 #

i hope that you all also have 'real' support in your lives, versus the 'virtual' support you will receive here. who will keep you accountable? also, it may help to post a deposit reminder somewhere everyday where you will see it. remember, just like losing weight, what you SEE will motivate you. first week....a breeze. :) oh, i'm ahead of the game already. you?

pinkrenegade 01/ 1/2012 #

Early this morning I got up and made my list of numbers ~ 52 of them. I put it in a large plastic pencil case that young kids take to school. ..had one left over from days gone by. :o) I took a new calendar and on each Friday I wrote in red marker the number of week it was. Thank you to @pengrafyx for the great idea of wring down the numbers. During months that don't have 3 birthdays and holidays as well, I'll take a higher number, cross it off and put that amount in my pencil case. During the busy months I can put in a lower amount. I agree it shouldn't matter in what order the money gets put away. It's just wonderful that it does.

I also have a backup envelope for some $5 bills.

I am excited about this and have been anxious for the new year to begin.

Thank you very much @thehurriedmommy ♥

Barbara 01/ 1/2012 #

At the end, let's all get together (as much as possible globally) and have a party!!!

Michele360 01/ 1/2012 #

MacBook Pro, here I come!

thehurriedmommy 01/ 1/2012 #

remember, this is A LOT of money you will have saved. carefully consider what you will do with it. i am especially interested in learning of new and meaningful charities from you to consider giving a portion of my savings to.

thehurriedmommy 01/ 1/2012 #

someone said that they will use their money for fertility treatments. awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

julierachelliz 01/ 1/2012 #

I am signed up for my five swaps, but I will be doing this on my own anyway. Thanks for the super idea!!

thehurriedmommy 01/ 1/2012 #

SOMEONE, PLEASE SPIN OFF THIS SWAP AND HOST A CHILDREN'S/TEEN'S VERSION. I CANNOT AS MY HANDS ARE FULL. EVEN IF THEY ARE ONLY ABLE TO SAVE A DOLLAR A WEEK, WHAT AN AWESOME LESSON IN FINANCES THEY WILL LEARN. I HOPE TO SEE A SWAP UP FOR THEM SOON. ITS NOT TOO LATE! :)

jgazin13 01/ 1/2012 #

I'm so happy I found this! I've been really good at saving money every month to eventually go on a road trip, and this sounds like an awesome way to save even more! We'll see how it goes. Great idea!!

thehurriedmommy 01/ 2/2012 #

i awoke this morning looking at money! yay! and its only going to get better and better.... :)

EbonyMoon 01/ 2/2012 #

@sosiejude I'm in the uk too, if I've worked it out right it means that we'll have saved more pounds than dollars? :) £1,378 is $2,137!

Leejas72 01/ 2/2012 #

Did we come up with a solid total? I did it on my calculator and it says in the $5000.00 range. Is this right?

Leejas72 01/ 2/2012 #

Did it again. $1378 sounds more like it.

homekeepingheather 01/ 2/2012 #

I plan to blog my progress on my personal blog in addition to here. Feel free to check it out and add your own comments there at www.homekeeping-heather.blogspot.com. Such a fun idea to write all the numbers out & see which ones you can get to each week. Think Isll try that. :) I plan to put savings in our savings account at the bank for a mini emergency fund as well as add some to the teip jar we've been throwing $ in since last summer so we can take a little longer TN vacation this year.

showniez 01/ 3/2012 #

@thehurriedmommy Can you make a SPECIAL GROUP for this please ?:) I think it will be very useful to share our stories and progress in a group.

thehurriedmommy 01/ 3/2012 #

a group has now been established. click 'groups' and find '2012 52-Week Savings Group'. @showniez ...i am assuming you will be an officer?

thehurriedmommy 01/ 3/2012 #

if you cannot find the group, go to my profile, look under my groups and click '52 Week Savings Group/2012". click to join group.

faeeka78 01/12/2012 #

i think this is such a great idea and even though i see this swap now only and its too late to join , i will be doing this savings on my own anyway :-)

mcovey 03/27/2012 #

how is everyone saving going I wanted to start this and have saved my change but I no where near what I would have been for this swap ---this is a great idea and you should have I figure $91--I so wish I had that much so far but mine is closer to $10--wow I am so proud of the ones that has been able to do this --Lets here all of your totals I am so curious of how much you all have saved

ue 04/16/2012 #

this is cool.........can I join this?

Nastee 04/23/2012 #

my jar is stuffed so far. i love the way it looks. my kids are eyeing the cash too hard. lol how is everyone else doing

Didra 04/29/2012 #

My envilope is padded and my bank acount has money in it too:) THis swap has motivated me so much I have saved enough to redo my bathroom No more carpet yay tile!!!!

punkydoodle 04/29/2012 #

I had to switch what I was keeping my money in because the first bottle wouldn't hold change. Now I have a big silhouette of a lady bank with almost $200 stuffed inside! How is everyone else doing so far?

smmarrty 05/15/2012 #

I have to move the money to the bank each month or so. The temptation of having $100. cash in my apartment is just too great. But it is fun to see my savings account grow and grow!

I am a little short of the 6-month total but I hope to make it up after my bonus in June.

PamV 07/25/2012 #

I have $870!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided to even out my weeks and round it up to $30 a week...I use a small envelope...I've been faithful!!!!!!!!!! We're half way thru the year. Is anyone else still going strong? PamV :-)

Didra 07/29/2012 #

I'm doing super good too. I just finished remodeling my bathroom and I still have money in the bank :) I may never go to the craft store again. Better deals online and no impulse buying

showniez 08/14/2012 #

Hello hows everyone doing?:)

pinkrenegade 09/ 9/2012 #

I was able to help out a daughter financially and also buy myself a laptop. I love being able to have money set aside and pay cash for some clothes and other things I want. If I now don't have the cash, I wait till I do.

This has been a great way to focus on saving money for good use.

pinkrenegade 12/ 1/2012 #

This has been a great year for putting money away. Many thanks to @thehurriedmommy Just a few weeks to go but I think I'll be slacking off a bit as there's some work Id like done in my bathroom and rec room.

user6937 12/ 5/2012 #

Well, I did it - I have the correct amount, early!! :) I'm clicking "sent", and will let my partner know.

sleepingrover2010 12/26/2012 #

Well I did it---I have the amount completed. I have clicked "sent" and will let my partner know. I plan to do this again in 2013 but may do it like @pengrafyx who put all the dollar amounts on individual papers and then drew an amount each week and paid that amount into the bank. This was a great way to save money. I am going to put my money in my savings account.

Barb

showniez 12/26/2012 #

I did it!!!!! I can't imagine that someone like me, who is very difficult to save could make it!!! So happy :) now I have more than thousand dollar inside my tin! Such a neat ideas, will do it again just with myself for the year 2013.

smmarrty 12/27/2012 #

I started a 2013 savings swap - check it out. I hope everyone has a happy and prosperous new year!

PamV 12/31/2012 #

I averaged it out to $30 each week...approx. $1500 and I also put in extra here and there often instead of purchasing something or just putting in $10 whenever...I now have $2,300!!!! Yes, $2,300!!!! I never thought I could save that much...it's going into purchasing a CD for long-term savings!! I made a new envelope up again for 2013...I put a little line in front of the week's date and put a checkmark on the line when I slip in the week's $30...when it accumulates a bit I hit the bank for a deposit...it's cool seeing 52 blank little lines on this coming year's envelope and checkmarks on the 52 little lines on this past year's envelope!!
