Description:

There has been some interest in a "beginner friendly" zentangle swap so here it is! You are welcome to join this swap even if you have NEVER made a zentangle in the past! I just ask that you give it your best effort. If you are a seasoned tangler and join this swap, keep in mind that you might be receiving someone's VERY FIRST attempt - how exciting!

For this first swap I want to keep things fairly simple and straight-forward. We will be using a base/tile that measures 31/2" by 3 1/2". I use watercolor paper for my zentangles. You can use white cardstock if you choose - it just needs to be white and sturdy.

Start by making a string with pencil then fill in the spaces with a thin tipped black pen using AT LEAST FIVE (5) different tangle fill patterns (either official ones or ones you make up). Please don't use any color on this one. Feel free to add shading (but you don't have to).

Make one (1) tile for one (1) partner.

CLICK HERE for the official Zentangle website

CLICK HERE for lots and lots and lots of patterns! You don't have to use any of these patterns - just wanted to point you to a great resource

Go to Flickr and search for "zentangle" and you will be overwhelmed with all the inspiration you will find!

If you have ANY questions on either the swap or the zentangle process please don't hesitate to ask! I would love to turn every one of you into a tangler so I have more people with whom to swap!!

The two links offer lots of ideas, I actually did NOT know that it is a practice of a form of meditation. Thanks for the links and hosting.

Okay, I was going to try and start this today but I have a few questions: Should my tangle take up the whole tile or be kinda free-form and have some white around the edges?

It looks like the lines are usually done with a Micron or fine tip Sharpie. But if I wanted to shade it then what do I use for that? Pencil?

@tiggerkitn25 typically zentangles are more free form with some white around the edges. I've done some that fill up the entire tile tho.

Fine tip sharpies are a great pin to start with. Micron can be a bit pricey. Both work well.

To shade you would use a pencil.

Hope this helps.

You can also use a gray marker for shading. Or a pencil with a blending stub thing.

I've done ones that fill the entire tile and I've done ones that leave white around the edges.

Feel free to look at my Flickr (link on my profile) to see the kinds that I do - I think everyone pretty much develops their own style.

I really like using the new Sharpie pens (not the markers) for my tangles - I have used the thinner tipped pens but just prefer the sharpies.

Keep the questions and sign-ups coming!
