Description:

For this swap you will create a color themed I Spy Jar. For example all the items will be red, or blue etc...You will take a small jar , clean it and remove the label. Some jar suggestions- an empty parm cheese jar, an empty spice jar, an empty peanut butter jar etc... After it is cleaned and dried you will fill it with colored rice, colored lentils or some other filler. It is also fun to add something uniformly colored/shaped to add texture. This also makes it a little more work to find the items. These can be plastic gems, sequins, etc... You will also add at least 15 small items. The smaller the items, the more you will want to add. These can include:

A button

A penny

A paperclip

Small figurines

Shaped flat buttons

Marbles

Laminated photos or stickers

Keep In mind that pom-poms and fabric do not work well for this type of project. You will want a variety for this project. Do not for example add 25 red buttons and call it done. For this swap you will want to pick a color theme for your items:

red: apple, cherry, red flower, ladybug etc...

blue

green

yellow

orange

purple

etc...

After picking out your items, you will make a "I Spy List" to go along with the bottle. This can be as simple as a check-offable list or it can actually have photos of the objects you have included. Make it as detailed as possible if you do not include photos. Laminate your list, either using a laminator or packing tape. Add the items to your bottle, shake the items into the filler, and then super glue the lid on. Please do not skip this step or use a different glue. We want these to be safe for kids.

There are many sites online that will give you some inspiration, but I liked the photos on this one: http://countingcoconuts.blogspot.com/2011/02/homemade-i-spy-bottles-tutorial.html

For this swap you will have one partner, and will make an I Spy Jar and card to go along with it. These are NOT PROFILE OR AGED BASED, so I would suggest getting started after you sign up and then being able to ship out soon after partners are assigned. Minimum rating is 4.9. I will be checking profiles.

To color rice:

Things You'll Need White vinegar Jar Liquid food coloring Uncooked white rice Fine sieve Old newspaper Sandwich bag or container

Instructions

1 Pour 1/4 cup of undiluted white vinegar into a clean, empty wide-mouth jar. Add three or four drops of the food coloring of your choice, and stir to combine.

2 Pour 1/2 cup of uncooked white rice into the jar containing the colored vinegar. Seal the lid as tightly as possible.

3 Shake the jar vigorously until all of the rice appears to be dyed evenly. Place the jar on a flat surface, and allow it to sit undisturbed for about five minutes.

4 Pour the contents of the jar through a fine sieve over the sink to drain out the colored water. Spread the rice in a single layer on large sheets of old newspaper. Place it in a sunny location to dry for at least 30 minutes, or until no more moisture remains.

5 Store the dry dyed rice in a zipper lock sandwich bag or an airtight plastic container. Repeat the process to make additional colors. Use the dyed rice in craft projects.

I might do this one. I thought about going to dollar tree and getting the shredded paper and use confetti (confetti would be multi color thogh) for texture in their party area. Would that work ok? I know what color I'm going with already if i sign up

or tiny buttons for texture?

julierachelliz 04/15/2012 #

I would think anything that was small and uniform would work for texture. I have used sequins and glitter successfully. What I would suggest is trying it before you put the items in, and if it doesn't work then you can try something else.

I'll give my idea a try but i like the sequins idea. Glitter i think would be messy.

oh wait. You have it international. Is it suppose to be?

julierachelliz 04/17/2012 #

Thanks, fixed it. I would prefer to keep these US only. :)
