Description:

Altered Text ATCs can be very basic, with just the color covering most of the words, or more dressed up with embellishments. The fun part is blocking out most of the words on the book page to make an interesting phrase or sentence!

For this swap, we will make our 1 partner 2 ATCs in the colors red and orange. We're going to dress them up a little bit. Each ATC should have something on it other than just the color; outlining, doodles, images, embellishments, etc. Just something so it's not totally plain.

The book page should take up most or all of the background of the ATC, but you don't need to use an original book page. Copies are acceptable. Text should be primarily in English.

Recap:

  • 1 partner

  • Two cards -- one red, one orange

  • Something other than just the color

When I do these, I coat the words I want in Diamond Glaze et al., and then when I paint, the paint rubs off the glaze easily in case I hit a word I want to keep (I'm not a great painter!). Just a tip to maybe make it easier!

Upcoming swaps will be yellow&green, then blue&purple, so we'll have a rainbow!

Those look neat. I don't have any supplies to do so something like that. I don't have anything but some crayons. What would I need if I wanted to join in doing one down the road? Are they always set colors?

I usually see them with paint, but crayon could work. You'll need something stiff like a cereal box or thick cardstock cut to 2.5" x 3.5" (standard ATC size), a book page to alter, and some coloring implement. That's the basics!

For crayon, you may want to seal over the top with something like ModPodge, which the Internet says you can make by thinning white glue with water (I have not tried that yet).

For the embellishment you can do pen shading, glitter, little magazine images, scrap booking stuff, ribbon, stamping, pretty much anything. You might need some blank paper (colored or not) to cover the base you use, in case the cereal box or whatever shows through the book page. So glue of some sort again to attach that and the embellishment.

They aren't always set colors but since some of us are new at ATCs, I thought I'd give it more direction. Plus, I love rainbow pages in my ATC book!

Ps I've done them with kid's watercolors, like the ovals in the plastic tray. It took a few coats, but eventually covered the unwanted words.

Thanks for the more info for me. When I'm able to get to the thrift store again (hopefully in a few weeks) I'll grab some crafty stuff and try one of them. I've seen the ATCs around the site and most don't interest me at all but I love books and I think I would like these.

Wish this one was International - I love doing these!

Sorry @zoev1975 the postage is just too high for me. :( But @FunSizeSteph will be hosting International ATC swaps in the group methinks.
