A Fairy Tale Workbook (mini zine)

For this swap, you will make a mini-zine based on the fairy tale of your choice, starting from the prompts listed below. You should focus your mini-zine on a single traditional fairy tale (eg Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel – or even a story that doesn't begin with R!) but of course you may mention others in passing, if you like.

For this swap, it counts as a fairy tale if you can find it somewhere on the Sur La Lune Fairy Tales website. If you think your partner may be unfamiliar with the original tale you have chosen, please provide a brief synopsis of the story and/or a link to somewhere the full text can be read.

Choose 2 or more of the prompts below to kick-start your mini-zine:

  • Re-tell your chosen story. (Optional: Try limiting your text to 60 or 100 words.)
  • Illustrate any aspect of your chosen story.
  • Add a character study for any character from the story.
  • Re-tell the story as a poem. eg haiku, sonnet, blackout, found, or concrete poetry
  • Devise a puzzle or quiz based on your chosen story.
  • What is the most unlikely aspect of the original story you have chosen?
  • Create a new character to join the traditional cast – what role do they play?
  • Which product available on the Goblin Market would have been useful to any character within your chosen story?
  • Which character from a different fairy tale do you think would slot neatly into this one?
  • Design a commemorative faux postage stamp to celebrate your chosen story.
  • Tiny tutorial – a creative project based on any aspect of your story.

All prompts can be interpreted however you like, in any combination of words and/or images: your re-telling of the story could actually be a comic strip; your illustration could be a prose portrait; your character study could be an artistic interpretation. If you're not much of a writer the text can be minimal; if you're not much of an artist the words can take precedence. The only stipulation is to be creative!

In case it is not clear which prompts you have followed please include a note for your partner to explain your starting points.

Please note...

...interpretations of fairy tales can easily err to either the cuter or the darker or the funnier side. This swap is intended to play with expectations. If you are easily offended, this may not be the swap for you - sorry.

Mini zine info:

Minimum requirement is a standard 8-page mini-zine folded from a single sheet of A4 or letter-size paper. (Templates & folding guide available here.)

However, you are not limited to the standard 8-page format & may use additional/larger/smaller pages (so long as the equivalent of 1 full sheet of paper is used) & any binding method you like. Please make sure pages do not exceed A6/quarter-size (approx. 4” x 6”) as this is supposed to be a mini zine.

Zines may be handwritten/hand-drawn, typed, word processed, photoshopped, cut-and-pasted – whatever style suits you. For those new to zines, it is usual to create one master-copy then photocopy or print multiples of the original.

RE-CAP

  • 1 mini zine to each partner, using a template or at least 2 of the listed prompts as a starting point
  • A note mentioning which prompts you used, if it is not clear from the zine itself

As always:

Late swaps & low ratings will all be checked before assigning partners, so please contact me if you think there might be a problem.

There are 3 people in the swap and 23 watchers right now. I have some pencils down for a fully painted zine. Maybe bump out the dates in the future to get more people in? I'm squished for time right now because October is Chicago Artists Month. I want to jump in or I will make a zine for maybe if someone hosts a future round of this same swap. ☺

This swap was listed on September 3rd, 5 weeks before the sign-up date & 7 weeks before send-by date. Unfortunately, it's just not possible for swap-dates to suit everybody but I do always try to give plenty of time between listing swap & sign-up dates. We currently have a Mything Link swap available in the group, & it would be quite feasible to use these prompts for that swap, instead. :)
