Doodle ATCs
Swap Coordinator:SharonP (contact)
Swap categories: Art  Artist Trading Card (ATC)
Number of people in swap:37
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:February 5, 2007
Date items must be sent by:February 20, 2007
Number of swap partners:8
Description:

Fill a full page of cardstock (8.5 by 11 inches or 21-22cm by 28cm or its nearest equivalent) with doodles, then cut it up into 8 ATCs and send 1 each to 8 different partners. Postage shouldn't be too bad since we are mailing one ATC to each, and swappers from all over the globe are encouraged to join.

I define a doodle as an unplanned drawing--it is hand drawn, but it is not a composition, but rather a random collection of images and designs. To make the sample here, I drew a little from time to time until I had filled the page, then cut it up--this is one fragment, a little smaller than an ATC. I didn't really sit down to concentrate on it, but instead pulled it out when I had down time. If you like to watch television, this could go nicely with that! (I don't, but do most of my doodling in coffee shops.)

When you are done, upload an image of the full-page doodle before you cut it up, please. It would be fun to see everybody's doodles, especially to go back and look at your partner's full doodle after you have received one small piece of it. (Sometime after the sign-up date has passed there will be a gallery for our group where you can upload images.)

Whether it's all black line drawing or multi colored is up to each person.

In sum, you create one large doodle, you cut it up into 8 ATCs (2.5 by 3.5 in., or 6.4 x 8.9 cm). With 8 cards you will have a little leeway to choose the best cuts (it is possible to cut 10 from one page). You mail one each to 8 partners and of course get 8 different ones back. (If you like to fill a 9-pocket page, consider making a composite one with your scraps to keep for that last pocket!)

No need to wait for the sign-up deadline to start--begin your doodle as soon as you sign up!

People with ratings less than 4 and any recent no-sends will be contacted for an explanation. Newbies who don't have a rating yet are welcome, but must have their profiles filled out.

When five days (or so) after the "send" date has passed, I'd like to hear from anyone who didn't get cards from any of their partners, please. Use the contact form on my profile to send me a message.

For inspiration, you might enjoy the children's book Doodler Doodling, by Rita Golden Gelman, illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky. I got it from my public library, it's really cute.

Janetburns 01/15/2007 #

Hi, where would we upload the finished image? Thanks, Janet

LiveTheChaos 01/15/2007 #

oh man, this is soooo weird!! Yesterday, I cut a piece of cardstock, doodled all over it, cut it up into nine atcs and made an ATC page in my binder... I seriously thought about making a swap like this...I logged on today intending to start the swap... This is crazy!!! cue the twilight zone music!

SharonP 01/15/2007 #

Hi, Janet, I have e-mailed the Swap-bot coordinators about that. This is my first swap to host, and I had noticed that other swaps always have a photo gallery you can upload images to, but I couldn't find a way to add that feature to this, so I'll have to wait for their reply, I guess.

If you want to see the full page of my doodle, you can go to my blog, www.sharonscompendium.blogspot.com

Maybe in the meantime, if you have a spot where you can upload your image (a blog or a flicker page or something), you could post that information here for others to see.

Hopefully we'll have a swap gallery here soon.

sharon

SharonP 01/15/2007 #

Hey, Gartenzwerg, that is cool, in a weird sort of way. Must be that great minds think alike!

DreamHope 01/15/2007 #

Sharon and Janet: The option to upload a picture appears automatically either after the close date or after the send by date.

twobluecrows 01/15/2007 #

It's possible to get ten ATCs out of an 8.5 x 11 piece of cardstock, too! Less waste of all that cool doodling--

measuring down one side (11") mark every 2.5", then measure across the top to 3.5" and draw a line down--this makes four cards oriented horizontally.

Then on the top from there measure and mark three 2.5's and measure down the other long side two 3.5"--this gives you six cards from the remainder oriented vertically.

Saves a lot of paper. I'll try to post a template for this on my blog and link it here.

twobluecrows 01/15/2007 #

Here's the URL for the picture of the template.

chrichri 01/15/2007 #

Hi Sorry, English is not my first language so I'm a bit unsure of what cardstock is. Is it the same as mounting board? Or is it some kind of weighted paper? If so what would be the density or thickness of the card?

Anyways, the swap sounds great; I've never done ATCs before but I'd like to give it a go even though I'm not exactly an artist.

Christina

SharonP 01/16/2007 #

Hi, Christina, cardstock is heavier and stiffer than regular paper, like the sort of thing trading cards or greeting cards are printed on. It may be the same thickness as a cereal box or cracker box, but it can be a little thinner than that. You could use hot-press watercolor paper as another option (hot press because that is smoother than cold press).

For an article about ATCs, including a little history, written by Carrie Mercer, who recently hosted a swap on this site, go to http://www.mplsobserver.com/node/501

To find sites about ATCs in languages other than English, try a search on "ATC" but also add your language's word for "art" and "trade" and you are likely to have something come up that you will find useful.

I hope that helps! Thanks for your interest. sharon

SharonP 01/17/2007 #

Cyn, thanks for that link to the template for cutting 10 ATCs from a single sheet. It's a great idea to cut 10 of them and have two left over for other trades or to keep. The reason I had decided on 8 was two-fold. One was to fill all but one slot in a 9-pocket trading card sleeve, with room to add one of your own to complete the set; the other was to allow some leeway if a person wanted to make slightly "off" cuts for the best results. Probably the smaller or more abstract your doodles the more likely you will be satisfied with cutting 10 of them. Anyway, it's great to have the guidelines.

Etayne 01/27/2007 #

Are you accepting Newbies to this swap?

SharonP 01/28/2007 #

I had replied to Etayne directly, then realized that there may be others who want to know, so, yes, if you are new and don't have a rating yet, please hop on. Because we each have 8 different partners, and because this isn't too difficult (I think!), I figure the risk of a no-send is small (that is, if someone doesn't send, their partners should still get 7 cards).

But I do want to know if anybody didn't get all eight cards once two weeks have passed after the send date, so please contact me via the Swap-bot message form on my profile at the end of Feb. if you come up short and I will try to remedy the situation.

wildcargo 02/ 1/2007 #

I have done a similar activity with a very large sheet of paper that I doodled on both sides and then cut apart at random. The random cutting made for some very interesting images but it does mean that sometimes images are cut in half or at weird angles, and details that you thought were minor become major. So are you a gambler or are you a careful template cutter?

SharonP 02/ 2/2007 #

Ha! Good question! I guess if I were more of a gambler I would say cut the thing into 10 ATCs. But I found I didn't want to slice certain images down the center, so when I got done with mine I had 8 ATCs and that's the reason I chose 8 as the number for the swap.

Gamblers and careful cutters are both welcome here!

dreamstealer 02/ 3/2007 #

I finished mine and with great excitment ran downstairs to my studio and cut them up...sigh ...I forgot to scan the sheet first....guess I'll just place them all on the scanner... This was lots of fun...thanks Sharon....

SharonP 02/ 3/2007 #

It'll be like putting a puzzle together!

Etayne 02/ 6/2007 #

And they're off in the mail! happy swapping.

Susi 02/ 7/2007 #

i did not upload a picture of my completed doodled page, but they have been done for weeks! I am glad to have partners finally to send them too! susi

SharonP 02/ 7/2007 #

It's fun to see those that we can, but I sure don't want anyone to feel they "must" upload the image if it is too much bother. Swapping is supposed to be fun, after all.

Thanks, Etayne, for uploading your image, it's really great.

It was a bit too large for me to see it all at once, but I discovered that if I use control-click (I have a Mac), then select "view image" it reduces it to fit in my screen. I think with Windows you right-click or something to get the same menu. Anyway, have a look, Etayne's doodle is wonderfully colorful and looks a lot like spring (we've had about a week of below-zero weather here in Minnesota, so I really appreciate the warmth I feel when looking at your doodle!).

I hope a few others can upload images too.

simplysarah 02/ 7/2007 #

MINE ISNT AS COOL APART AS IT WAS TOGETHER... IM NOT REALLY AN ARTIST ...IM A PRETENDER... HOPE YOU DIG EM ANYHOWS...

ALSO I MADE PHOTO COPIES TO SEND WITH THEM SINCE MY NEW SCANNER WONT TALK TO MY COMPUTER YET...

SENT OUT TODAY...

CHEERS

rain 02/ 7/2007 #

i ended up uploading the image twice rolls eyes bloomin swap-bot said it didnt work first time round!

Mines not elaborate - they are biro doodles XD However they do look great as atcs :D

Can't wait to see what i get through the door!

SharonP 02/ 7/2007 #

Simply Sarah, I like your idea to send a photcopy with the ATC so each person sees the whole, that's a good alterntive to uploading an image.

Sp0z, your doodle is great--I love the notes and text and such along with the images. I think yours is more like a genuine doodle!

dreamstealer 02/ 8/2007 #

I recieved my Doodle ATC from Etayne and i think it's a great ATC...a face on it, stars and looks to be a planet...lots of color, nice work....I like art with a face on it.....

Etayne 02/ 9/2007 #

thank you!

user5648 02/ 9/2007 #

I made a photo of my doodle page but I have to try again later to upload it. This is a very good idea for a swap.

paperholic 02/ 9/2007 #

I've just uploaded my full page to the gallery. I decided this was a good opportunity to play with my gel and chalk pens, so decided to do my doodles on a black gessoed page. I've got no idea what the individual ATCs will look like - it's Friday evening here in Oz, so I've got the weekend to try and work out the best way to cut it up so each one doesn't look too bad. I will post them on Monday. Bellecat - I thought yours was very interesting and I liked your hairy face people.

Etayne 02/ 9/2007 #

I love seeing the complete uploaded doodle. This is a very fun swap!

bren 02/ 9/2007 #

First two cards in one day; one from Sharon and one from Etayne. Thank you! Still working on my doodle page and it is coming along. It's nice to see people posting pictures in the gallery. Not many swaps I've been in have had that much participation in the image department.

SharonP 02/10/2007 #

Thanks everybody who has posted their images so far, it's really fun to see them. Etayne, your card arrived yesterday, it's great, thanks. I cut enough of mine to keep one, so I'll have a full-nine-card page when we're all done sending. It'll be like a really cool crazy quilt!

Paperholic, I love the gel pens on black, that is so stunning.

FridaKahlo 02/11/2007 #

paperholic - My "hairy-faced people" are doodles i came up with in jr. high or high school, i don't exactly remember when they were first drawn. they are called "Thrills Babies" I'm at a loss to how it all came about except to say that there is a history to them. They are actually the side effect of falling into a pile of laughter. They kind of "pop" out of you when that happens. They became part of a book that i wrote. Their feet form a d and a b because they were my initials before i got married. So they kind of became my logo so to speak. That's not quite the right word, but it's as close as i can think of late on saturday night.

user5782 02/11/2007 #

My full page is at: http://s149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/sjensen73/

SharonP 02/11/2007 #

Belle the Cat, it's cool to know the story behind your "hairy faced people" image. I would say that it's like a "signature" image for you. If you were into letterboxing, you could make your signature rubber stamp from that image.

Thanks, Gemini, for providing a link to your image. That works too.

This is great, guys. I hope more people continue to post their images.

user5648 02/12/2007 #

Aya, your very nice doodle ATC arrived today! Thank you!

user5648 02/12/2007 #

I uploaded a picture of my doodle. The picture is much too big, sorry. I don`t know how to make it smaller.

SharonP 02/13/2007 #

It's OK if the image is too big to fit on a screen. To see it better, you can, with a Mac, do control-click, then select "view image" and it gives you a smaller one and you can see it all. I think with PCs it might be that you right-click first, then you should get to choose "view image" or something like that.

It looks cool, murmel--I especially like all the kitties!

aya 02/13/2007 #

K. DeLong - I don't know what your swap-bot ID is, but I got your card - it's lovely, thanks!

FarStarr 02/13/2007 #

Hi Simply Sarah, Thanks you for your doodle! I love the idea of sending a copy of the complete page!...wish I thought of it...Mandy

FridaKahlo 02/13/2007 #

Sarah - loved your doodle, thanks!! Dianne

user5648 02/13/2007 #

Shannon, thank you! Nice ATC! My mother fell instantly in love with it!

FridaKahlo 02/13/2007 #

Ann - received your ATC today, loved it, this is turning out to be a really cool swap. Nice job everyone! Dianne

twobluecrows 02/14/2007 #

Hi all, just a hint for uploading your pictures, if you can size them to be about 6"x7" (somewhere around 400x600 pixels) at 72 pixels/inch resolution, they will fit nicely on the screen for viewing all at once, without having to scroll up and down. Internet posted picture resolution doesn't need to be any larger than 72 because that's all it can show anyway, anything larger is pretty much wasted. Cyn

twobluecrows 02/14/2007 #

So far to date I've received some terrific doodles from: Lorraine Glenn, Grace Wolf, Anna Duvas (sp?),and Elke Schaub (thanks for the lovely stamps on the envelope, too!!) This is a very cool Swap!

Cyn

SharonP 02/14/2007 #

thanks, Cyn. I wasn't sure what size pix needed to be, so that's great and very helpful. Easier than my approach!

user5782 02/15/2007 #

I received my ATC from Dianne Miller today, thank you very much! It's cool!

dreamstealer 02/15/2007 #

I recieved an ATC from Shelly ...I really like all the smiley faces.... I have a question...the card said "Hand Drawn" instead of Doodle...so I'm hoping it goes here.... I didn't find your name on the participants in this swap so maybe you go by another name....great ATC.... thanks Shelly

SharonP 02/16/2007 #

Yes, Shelly is one of our participants.

I have received cards so far from Etayne/Antje, Dreamstealer/Junanne, and Barbara (can't find your Swap-bot moniker); they are all great. I'm really enjoying the variety of doodles!

chrichri 02/16/2007 #

Thanks to you all:)and to a really cool swap!

user5782 02/18/2007 #

Rcvd from Kathy Coulter today, how fun! Thanks!

user5782 02/18/2007 #

Dreamstealer, the "hand drawn" was for this swap, sorry about the confusion!

paperholic 02/18/2007 #

I\'ve received 5 doodles so far: from LANCEA(?) - black and white microbes and flowers; ELKE - colour and glitter; ORIGAMI GRACE - lovely aqua and iris blue shades; LORRAINE - a bit of true doodling; and AYA - very intriguing pair of fishnet stocking legs and the words \"dare you\" - well cut from the original. And yes Aya, it is summer here, and currently 28° (somewhere around 90°) - you have my heartfelt sympathies, I can\'t bear being cold.

I posted mine today - I had to do a bit of careful measuring and cutting to get them each to come out right, but in the end I am quite pleased with them.

paperholic 02/18/2007 #

Belle the Cat - (by the way, is that from the old story about \"belling the cat\") - thanks for the info about the Thrill Babies. They rang a bell with me because I also used to draw something very similar when I was in school many years ago, and I had forgotten all about that until I saw yours.

chrichri 02/18/2007 #

Hi Sheely;

I got my doodle atc from Brenda today, WOW, you are an artist!!! Was that really a doodle??? susi

OrigamiGrace 02/24/2007 #

I've received 5 of 8 cards and they've all been great! Thanks to Lancea, sp0z, aya, Susi U., and Elke S. Great theme:)

bren 02/24/2007 #

Thanks Susi! Glad you like it! Yes, when I doodle, that's what comes out, little pictures.

I got another card from Christina, Thank you! I really like the worm on the mushroom and the knitting too. That's six so far.

Sharon- will you be doing another Doodle swap like this again soon? I like getting 8 cards from different people instead of 8 cards from one person.

FridaKahlo 02/25/2007 #

wow, i have now received all 8 of my cards. i think everyone needs to give themselves a big pat on the back. this was a great swap. - i was thinking, from the conversation about having another doodle swap, what about a gel pen on black cardstock doodle swap? i think that was pure genius and turned out great! I am so glad i received one of them.
oh, and belle the cat is kinda play on words as in belling the cat and that my cat\'s name is isabella and lots of times i just call her belle rather than izzie. she\'s probably really confused, i call her belle, the kids call her izzie and my husband calls her dizzy. so thanks one and all, i can\'t wait to try this again! Dianne

scottgirl 02/25/2007 #

I like it when folks indicate that they've received my swaps...so I'd better do the same!! Great doodles from Jim, Ann, Joy, Sherry, Sarah, Angeline, Dianne, and Cyn. Thanks for sharing "pieces" of yourself and your art. Great idea, Sharon...but then, I know you've got a million of 'em : )

SharonP 02/27/2007 #

Boy, I'm really delighted with the continued communication and image sharing that we've had with this group. What a great bunch.

We do have 3 people who haven't sent yet, at least that haven't clicked the button, so I will contact them to see if I can find out what's up.

I got a card over the weekend from Lana Richey, a gel-pen-on-black doodle. Very nice!

sharon

user5782 02/27/2007 #

Rcvd from Nathalie today in Belgium, thank you!

pitza 02/27/2007 #

Heya I'm sooo excited to get my swap bot!!! It sure makes me feel less home-sick here in NZ. Thanks To Lorraine, Grace, Isis and Cyn! I put them all up on a notice board I made.Hope you all received cards from me as well. My full picture is at http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e107/horsesheep/DSCF0081.jpg. :) Enjoy!

user5648 02/28/2007 #

There are two cards I have not yet received but I assume they are on its way.

user5648 03/ 1/2007 #

Now I am only waiting for one card and I am informed that it will be on its way. This was really a good swap making creativity flow.

chrichri 03/ 3/2007 #

Still waiting for two ATCs but I'm hoping they're on their way...do you think I should contact the senders? Don't want to seem pushy, so I'll wait another week and see, I guess.

SharonP 03/ 3/2007 #

chrichri -- You can look on the list of participants to see if the partners you're waiting for have clicked "sent." If they have, you could let them know you didn't get them yet and ask how long ago they were mailed, anyway. If they haven't, you could give them an opportunity to explain why before you rate them. I hate to be too hasty with giving ones, but the rating system is designed to let swap hosts know who's reliable, so after you contact them, if they don't reply, I think it is fair to go ahead and give them a one.

FarStarr 03/ 4/2007 #

Not bad..I received 7 out of 8. My 8th person is still marked not sent. I too don't like to give out '1's' unless deserved, but I don't think that one is on its way. I'm guessing everyone who was supposed to get one from me did because I haven't heard anything. Great Swap Sharon, thanks!

dreamstealer 03/ 6/2007 #

I recieved a great litle Doodle ATC from madievalmayden ...thanks Nie heart and cross......

chrichri 03/ 7/2007 #

Hi Jolyn (medievalmayden); I just received your doodle today, thanks a lot!

Well, now I've received 7 out of 8. I'll check to see whether my last partner has sent his/hers like you said Sharon... and wait a bit more.

SharonP 03/ 7/2007 #

On March 1, I e-mailed the two who have not yet checked the send button, asking them to contact their partners. I have not heard back from either of them and I am guessing neither have their partners.

It is always possible that they got sick or had a familiy emergency or something. It's impossible to tell without any reply to messages.

They may still try to catch up, but I think if you e-mailed and haven't heard back, it's quite reasonable to give a 1.

I did make an extra page of doodles, which I again cut into 8 ATCs (I'm just not ruthless enough in my cutting to make 10 ATCs from the page!) So, if you are short and would like one of mine, please let me know. I know some of you who are missing ATCs already have one of mine, so it's up to you if you want another.

Sometimes it's just nice to complete the set, especially if you include one of your own to make a full 9-card page.

chrichri 03/ 8/2007 #

Hi Sharon,

That sounds great about the ATC; I really wouldn't mind getting one of yours as I thought your example page was just awesome:) I'll give my partner a few more days 'til I rate her but there's not much I can do when she doesn't reply.

SharonP 03/ 8/2007 #

OK, Christina, an ATC will be on its way from me to you in Friday's mail.

sharon

Etayne 03/15/2007 #

I would love one of yours if you still have one! I'm one short, too. But, all in all it was a nice swap with great results. Etayne

Hi Sharon!

Just a quick word to say thanks a million for your lovely ATC; I really love it:) AND I'm really fond of mice so it couldn't have been any more right spot on. I'm very grateful that you bothered sending another one:) I would gladly give you a heart if I could rate you.

I've received and rated all but one ATC so far, just waiting for Indiana de la Cruz (weirdindy04). I put a 0 rating, but will be happy to change it if the ATC shows up. Cyn

Sharon, thank you for the ATC you sent -- it was a lovely addition to the doodle ATC set. You were a most gracious hostess.
