Description:

I love hand-dyed and hand-painted yarn -- and I'd bet you do, too! For those of us following one of the knit-from-your-stash "yarn diets," hey, this isn't a yarn purchase ... It's a yarn gift! So come on in and enhance your stash with some scrumptious hand-dyed yarn. If this is popular enough, we'll have another. :D

You'll have one partner, whom you'll send one skein of yarn. This yarn must be...

  • Hand-dyed or hand-painted -- store-bought, dyed by you, or whatever else is fine, as long as it's hand-dyed.
  • Around 2 ounces in weight, which is just over 50 grams. Check the yarn label for the weight; handspinners, you already know how to weigh your yarns, right? ;D
  • Good quality yarn with a good quality dye job, i.e., not some horribly failed experiment, but that's a given, I hope! Food-grade dyes like Kool-Aid and Wilton's are permitted, however, and it's also true that some people's failed experiments are other people's dream yarns. ;)

I'm not requiring swappers to conform to their partners' specific preferences, since hand-dyed is specific enough, IMO. But feel free to post preferences (fiber, color, etc.) in the comments section below in case your partner does want to tailor their swap to you. If they do, I hope you'll be extra appreciative. ;D (If your partner posts allergies, however, do definitely respect that. ;))

Oh, and there's about a month between the end of signups and the send-by date, to allow for people to hand-dye their own yarn if they like.

Any questions?

Happy swapping!

I am not sure how much is 2 ounces because I buy yarn by yardage requirements, but I will find out. As far as colors, I love purples, greens, blacks, reds, and pinks. I have no allergies but prefer alpaca over wool. For other hints and to check on my sanity my blog spot is

I am allergic to lanolin, so please no wool unless its superwash. I love forest green, blues, and purples - but please AVOID PINK if you possibly can ;)

todsahonchik 01/21/2007 #

I LOVE PINKS, purples, fuschias, blues, greens, blacks, reds, yellows, oh, heck. I love it all. Looking forward to it. Thanks in advance!

I took a couple of classes in hand painting/dying yarn recently. This is great motivation to apply what I learned. I like most colors, but red, brown and orange not so much.

user960 01/22/2007 #

Knitstress, 50 grams (1 3/4 ounces) is 87 yards of wool, approximately worsted-weight, commercially-spun yarn according to the label of one of my balls of yarn from Jo-Ann. However, the actual yardage per 2 ounces will depend on things like the fiber, spinning method, and fineness of the yarn ... which is why I didn't put a yardage requirement, just a weight requirement. ;)

Hope that helps! ;D

Oh, and for my partner, I like most natural fibers, but (like Knitstress) prefer alpaca over wool, and I enjoy cotton, too, since I live in Florida. I also have a very distinct preference against cultivated/bombyx silk (I like wild silks like Tussah, though), if you feel like indulging me. ;)

And I'm allergic to angora. :D

My favorite colors are green and blue, but I also like purple, and I don't mind pink, red, orange, or yellow if they're not the dominant colors of a yarn. I like brown and natural colors, too, so I don't mind if there are gaps in the dyeing where there are white spots, or in the case of colored fibers overdyed, brown or gray spots, or whatnot. ;)

Thank you Jeweled Claws, it helps I am going on a Yarn Store Crawl of the local Yarn stores in Ft Worth on Staturday..... First have to stop at Starbucks to get coffee then onto the LYSs

Someone told me that swaps could be addictive; I'm afraid she was right! Hand dyed is a favorite for me; all colors, all fibers!

user4433 01/23/2007 #

Since spring is right around the corner pastels would be nice.

user5769 01/26/2007 #

Hi. I have no known allergies. I am an absolute Yarn Junkie! and I will be so very happy with any color at all, but just in case you were wondering, my favorite colors are any colors you might see in a sunrise/sunset!!! Reds, corals, pinks, oranges, mostly, but also purples, yellows, etc. So, pretty much any colors!!!

user5892 01/26/2007 #

I've got no known allergies to any fabrics, and I adore earthtones...and orange/red/yellow. But I'm not picky ;)

Winnie 01/30/2007 #

Hi! I just sign up. I speak spanish, so I would like to know if "Hand dyed yarn or hand painted yarn" means solid color fiber or colour mix. (matizado, shaded, blend) I suposse that Spring swap means fresh fibers or don't? :p I have no known allergies. Every type will be welcome.I dont have favorite colors, but I dont like much dark colors I love happy colors :)and I love blend colors. Well, I love yarn, so Happy Swap for all!! :))

Kaylee 01/31/2007 #

I adore hand painted yarn, particularly natural fibers. I'm currently obsessed with socks right now, but am not limited to that by any means.

I like most colors (exceptions being neons, rainbows and orange/pea green/mustard colors).

user960 01/31/2007 #

Winnie: Hand-dyed/hand-painted yarn can be either solid colors or multiple colors, although multi-colored yarn seems very popular among the hand-dyed crowd. :D "Spring swap" mostly means that this is the swap for the season of spring, but if you want to make your package/yarn spring-themed, go for it!

i hand dye my own yarns & I have been selling it on ebay. All of my buyers have left wonderful feedback. No complaints. Check me out on ebay. My user id is: vormer. I have tuition to pay for 2 daughters so I decided to start hand dyeing sock yarn to sell. I taught myself and went from there. I would like any colors except black, yellows, greens. Any other combination is ok.

Hello! I have not heard from my partner, so I thought I'd throw my preferences in here. I do not really like reds with pinks, but apart from each other they are ok. I am not an orange person either, but other than that, I'm not really picky! I prefer a more refined yarn - not itchy. Hope I'm not being too particular. I'd love to hear from my partner! Thanks!

user960 02/13/2007 #

By the way, just in case some people flake, if anyone is interested in being a Swap Angel (meaning you'll send a swap package to someone who didn't receive one, and can't contact their partner), drop me a line!

Thanks. :D

user4688 02/14/2007 #

Cassandra 02/20/2007 #

my package went out to Peety. I hand dyed the yarn myself. For those of you interested, I sell hand dyed yarn on ebay. Check it out. User id: vormer. Enjoy the yarn Peety.

user5434 02/24/2007 #

My package went out today; it has been so cold the yarn I dyed wouldn't dry!

user5020 02/24/2007 #

I got my package today it is a beautiful exciting color and so perfect for the season. It comes from Kimberly at woven-spun she made this beautiful yarn and dyed it. The color is called Mardi Gras! How appropriate for the season. It's mainly colors that I love. Thank you for the yarn. I know I will have to buy some of your yarn the colors are very pretty.

Kaylee 02/25/2007 #

Peety, thank you! I loved the EcoWool you dyed. The colors are gorgeous, and like nothing I have in my stash! I can\'t wait to see how it knits up.

Paula 02/26/2007 #

Cassandra, I love the yarn you dyed. The colors are yummy. (turquose going into aqua going into a pale spring green)

Kaylee, I'm glad you liked the colors. I liked them, but was aiming for something just a little less bright. (desert rose and a evergreen/spring green mix)

user960 02/28/2007 #

My package is out to Captain Jim today. Woohoo. ;D

Cassandra 02/28/2007 #

received my gorgeous skein of yarn. Thank you so much.

user960 03/ 2/2007 #

Got my package from Geri Romeo, and WOW! It is awesome! Thank you so much for the neat yarn named after one of my early role models, and for all the extra goodies! They'll all be put to good use -- notecards, bookmark, and needle inventory ... Super-great package! :D

user4433 03/ 5/2007 #

JeweledClaws....Glad you like the package. Happy Knitting!

user2638 03/ 8/2007 #

Seriously? I sent twice the required amount of yarn, I sent hand-dyed silk yarn. I mailed it one day late (after all, we have been in the middle of the biggest snowstorms in years here in Minnesota!) I mailed it on 3/1 - and I paid for Priority Mail. Also, I e-mailed her on 2/28 to let her know it was going to be one day late, and still, she gives me a 3.0 - because I mailed it late. I am done. Seriously, I have consistently given way better packages than I have received in these swaps, and I've had late packages as well, I have never given anyone less than a 5.0 because it has been obvious to me that people are doing the best that they can. Seriously. Done with Swap-bot.

user960 03/ 9/2007 #

By the way, if anyone else feels they've been rated unfairly, feel free to bring it up to me. :D I'll try to fix anything I can possibly fix, and if I can't fix it -- well, I can at least note who's being intractable for future reference, can't I? ;)

user4951 03/13/2007 #

Gigi, Did you receive your package yet? I really hope that you have. Like I said - since it was later than I expected it to be, I ordered some extra special things and had them sent to you!! I hope that you have received them by now. Again, my apologies!! Thanks for being so patient and understanding!

Jensenaddict 04/ 4/2007 #
