"SEW AS YOU GO" Striped block!

Each month (or so) you will use the "sew as you go" method to make your partner 1 striped quilt block ~ 12.5" X 12.5" and the only two requirement is you must use no less than 6 different fabrics. Also NO batting. You will use some plain or leftover cotton fabric you have hanging around.

When you have enough squares to make a quilt, you will add your own batting and whatever you pick for a backing.

Here is the awesome tutorial you will use for this block!

I love Jenny!

Video In the video she uses backing, batting and then the stripes. In ours we will only use a piece of fabric to sew the stripes to.

You can start right away ~ senders choice in fabric! I have made this International because you can fold your block in 3rds and it fits in a business envelope!

I am SO excited about this swap!!

Please, if you have any questions let me know.

Sew As You Go!

Ok, I have a question. Do you mean for us to sew the strips just like in the video, to a backing and just skip the batting layer? Or are we just sewing them together with no backing? Which kind of defeats the purpose? I mean, then we are just making a striped quilt block, not quilting as we go. I would like to join, I just want to make sure I do it right! :)

@Mugsie I think the block we are making is technically just a String Quilt Block--technically "foundation pieced" since it's not quilted with the batting as we go, so maybe if you just changed the name?

I love these blocks, and if you trim them to 13" instead of 12.5", you can use it either as a 12.5" block, or cut into four 6.5" blocks for a different look. Very versatile! I usually start mine with a 15" square piece of muslin or white cotton and go from there, using lots of "strings" cut from scraps or jelly-roll extras.

Hello everyone ~ thank you for your comments!

I do this block in another group and we have been doing it for a long time.

I personal LOVE the way this block is put together.

The idea is you will have many blocks to put together and that is when you will add your own batting.

The pieces of fabric (something extra or a color you dislike) is to use to attach your strips to when using the sew as you go method. Or some call it quilt as you go.

It will be a quilt when you put all your blocks together and add it to your batting, you then can add sticking to make it quilted.

I take a piece of fabric (leftover) and I cut it @14 X 14".... I like to start at a corner. I add a piece of fabric and then add another piece so they are good sides facing in and I sew them onto the fabric . I then open the pieces and press it and add another piece facing good sides in and sew them. Making sure all my pieces reach the sides. When I am done I have a block I trim to 13" even if it says 12.5" X 12.5" just to have extra. Then later on I will sew all the blocks together, add batting, top stitch it and add a back fabric and bind it.

I hope that make sense and if not I can do it with pictures.

The whole idea is not what it is called but doing the blocks using that method.

Here is the perfect video as to what I am trying to explain but I DO NOT use that paper I use a piece of fabric.

Please watch it and let me know what you thing!
