Altoid Tin Fill It Up Swap

THATS an altoid box???? oh wow!!!! that is beautiful

do we decorate them or let our partners do it when they recieve them???

I'm not sure I can decorate a tin quite THAT nicely, but I think I could do all right... I'm in! susi

If you feel you cant decorate the tin then you could leave it plain.The picture above is for inspiration.You can paint the tin,decoupage,add stickers ect...Its really not hard here is a link to some directions.

I like the idea of filling the tin with cool stuff that we want to share with other crafters, and I like the idea of decorating them, although, like Susi, mine definitely won't be as elaborate as the example!

A friend of mine uses automotive primer to spray the tins first and then alcohol inks, and that always looks very cool. I haven't tried the auto primer yet because we are in the middle of a Minnesota winter and I wouldn't want to use spray paint indoors! I have also used Gesso and that seems to work fine too. I scratch up the surface a bit with sandpaper or steel wool first. But, I have very limited experience with altering tins, so I will definitely check out those links, thanks for providing them.

That sounds like fun for the summer.I also use sandpaper to rough up the surface.It makes it easier for the paint to stick.

This is what i do: I have a barbecue grill.I take my altoid tin and put it inside the grill,squirt some charcoal starter on it then throw in a match.You will then want to put the top down.Once it has stopped burning and has cooled off.You can take it inside and wash it.I then use distress paint or paints for a crackle finish.You can do pretty much anything you want at that point.There is a fantastic tutorial on Lisa Vollraths site.

hi, this is really fun to do. what is the size of the can? i love to join but i don't think singapore has this brand of tin chocolate availabe. so sad..

I'm not sure of the size but a medium size with a nice depth would do...

I measured an Altoid tin, it's 5.5 cm wide by 9.5 cm tall by 2 cm deep, so maybe you have some kind of tin that's about that size?

If your international and cant find an altoid tin by all means use a candy tin...No need to miss out on the fun.

Hi, I use sandpaper (actually a sanding sponge, they're easier to hang on to) and then a coat of gesso on my tins before adding the paint and other decorative stuff. My fave way is to use ends of polymer clay canes. :) Looking forward to doing this! I've completed 6 swaps already on swap-bot but so far nobody has rated me.... in some cases the mailing time just isn't up yet. So I still look like a newbie with 0 rating (sigh).
