Vocabulary Postcard Swap #3

I love words and I love postcards, so I thought I would join the two in a fun swap. Will you join me in an adventure? Perhaps you will learn a new word or two or, if you know the words already, it will give you a chance to use one of them by sending a postcard that you think reflects the meaning of one of the words.

The way this swap works is as follows:

  1. I have listed below five words that one does not typically hear used in every day conversation. Also provided is the definition of the word, several synonyms (a synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same thing), and an example of how the word is used within a sentence.

  2. You will pick one postcard from your collection that you think reflects one of the words, the meaning of the selected word, or some aspect of what the word means. Your interpretation can be creative, but you need to be able to explain it (see next instruction).

  3. On the back of the card you need to identify yourself, the name of the swap, the word your card is supposed to represent, and why you think your card fits your chosen word.

  4. Address the postcard and send it to your partner.

  5. When you receive a postcard from the partner you were assigned to, please be open to the sender’s interpretation, even if you think it might seem a little far-fetched. This swap isn’t about receiving items that match our own interpretations, but in discovering how someone else interprets the same thing. Do not rate someone down because you don’t care for the card or the sender’s interpretation, if they have otherwise met the swap requirements.

  6. The postcard you send should be in good condition, barring what might happen to it in transit.

  7. You must have a rating of at least 4.97 to play and no recent unexplained ratings of 3 or 1.

Here are the words from which you will choose one:

STARCHY
Definition: (1) stiff and formal, as in manner; (2) stiffened with starch.
Synonyms: stuffy, stiff, ceremonious, prim, doughy, gooey, gelatinous
Usage: Though I often poke fun at the butler's starchy manner, I secretly love the formality and sophistication he brings to my everyday life.

FRUMPISH
Definition: (1) primly out of date; (2) person who is dowdy, drab, and unattractive.
Synonyms: dowdy, boring, drab, dull, plain, old-fashioned
Usage: One look around the room was enough to know that my frumpish attire was out of place in this sea of little black dresses and stiletto heels.

EFFERVESCE
Definition: (1) become bubbly or frothy or foaming; (2) to show enthusiasm, excitement, liveliness, etc.
Synonyms: fizz, foam, froth, sparkle, bubble
Usage: The champagne effervesced in the glasses.

SPRITE
Definition: A small being, human in form, playful and having magical powers.
Synonyms: fairy, fay, pixie, elf, nymph, goblin
Usage: She seemed rather an airy sprite, which, after playing its fantastic sports for a little while upon the cottage floor, would flit away with a mocking smile.

LUXURIANT
Definition: (1) abundant or lush in growth, as vegetation; (2) florid, as imagery or ornamentation; lacking in restraint.
Synonyms: lush, profuse, riotous, exuberant, sumptuous, opulent
Usage: The rivulet was hidden by the luxuriant vegetation of the banks save at one point, where I caught a triangular patch of its glittering water.

I hope you will join me in this swap and that it will be fun.
