Description:

After an open swap next month that got me to do some drawing in a week I felt really uncreative. I'm trying to do another one which will be topic oriented - most time it's easier for me to make art when I have some sort of guideline or goal in mind.

So - for this swap, you'll make 5 postcards to 5 partners which would contain a drawing you made of random people - just use a 4"x6" piece of paper and draw people you see - at work, on the train, in a restaurant, at home, in the park, in the library, in a bar - wherever!

If you are totally new to figure drawing and don't feel like being brave and giving this a shot (it's great fun - I promise!) Then the alternative is drawing people from a photo or a magazine page.

It's not about perfection, it's about having fun and maybe for some of you - trying something new.

this is an international swap, people with rating below 4 will be banned, new people are welcome if they filled in their profile.

Oops - I just realize I gave no time for people to sign up for it, so I moved it in a couple of weeks - sign up till April 1st and send by April 15.

I corumba! Not sure I can do this. Five drawings of people. Ack! People are hard to draw. Let me think about it. :) Your talent so out shines mine in this area!!!! :)

Hi willow - it doesn't have to be perfect, it's just a cool challenge. I think that if you put your mind to it and take a chance you might surprise yourself.

Most people I know are a lot more talented then they give themselves credit for.

I sometimes do this in coffeeshops, which is rather fun. My drawings aren't great, either, and they're not so detailed in the facial features. I often jot down bits of overheard conversation with the drawings, which makes them kind of fun. There's an example on my blog here:

Sharon, I really like your style. I'm excited to see what would people come up with for this swap.

Mine were all mailed as of yesterday (April 3). I do hope people will post here or send a message when they receive their postcards!

Sharon P - Hi! Your card arrived yesterday, is that some kind of land speed record, or what? Great PC, btw! I wish I could draw with pens but I don't have the nerve, (nor the skill, lol)! Thank you so much and have a great day!

aya 04/ 5/2007 #

I send mine this morning and now I remembered I forgot to scan them before - so anyone who get one from me, if you can scan cthem that'll be great.

SharonP 04/ 5/2007 #

toryam, I'll make a confession: I draw them lightly with pencil first! Not the details, but I need to get the basic shapes and proportions right before I'm comfortable switching to pen! (then I erase the pencil marks)

Thanks for the compliment, I'm sure glad you like it.

(I just checked my notes, yours was mailed on April 2, so not quite as fast as it seemed, but not bad! I just had one left before I could click send on the 3rd, and wouldn't you know that's the one going all the way to Brom in Norway.)

I got a postcard from swap hostess Aya today. It's really great! I love your style and the commentary on the drawing, and using the back of a menu for your canvas is really cool! The personal note on the card is very nice too. Thanks! I'll take a picture and upload it to the swap gallery.

Hello, all. I just sent off my postcards yesterday, but I have to admit that I think I didn't fully grasp the spirit of the instructions. I interpreted handmade to mean that I drew on them myself, but now I realize that I should have created the drawing AND the entire card. So, I apologize to my partners for using blank store-bought postcards, and I hope you will forgive my error. Oops! Thanks.

toryam 04/17/2007 #

Lava Rocky, got your great PC today. Thanks! I think as long as you drew it yourself, that's what counts, right? There was no specification as to the TYPE of paper, so using 'post card paper' is perfectly acceptable, lol. Thanks again for the little man, I love it!

SharonP 04/17/2007 #

Lava Rocky, I used the same kind of precut postcard watercolor paper as you did. I don't think that is contrary to the idea of the swap at all.

And I got your postcard drawing today too -- thanks!

SharonP 04/19/2007 #

I got a truly amazing postcard from Julie (rustik) today. Wow!

And I got a delightful one from J.D. (sophiejune) -- I love your comments about the person you drew, it adds an element of story to the postcard.

Thanks to both of you!

I now have received four postcards and a message from Brom that his will be coming soon.

Great swap, and really fun to have such a small number so that some of us end up sending to each other. I really like that.

SharonP 04/19/2007 #

OK, I've uploaded photos of all the postcards I've received in this swap so far -- go have a look in the gallery!

Aya, I noticed that your Flickr page is a larger postcard page and not just for this swap. Did you want us to put our photos on that page too?

Julie - Your cheddar lady arrived today! Great card, I love the collage effect! Thanks so much!
