Description:

I've always wanted to participate in a dyed yarn swap, but was never confident enough in my dyeing skills to do it. So this swap is for those of you who have either NEVER dyed yarn before, or have done it only on occaison.

You will dye 100g of sock yarn, using whatever dyes and methods you'd like. KoolAid, Wilton cake dyes, acid dyes, whatever...there's tons of tutorials out there to help. Color choice is up to you, although I'm asking that if you are adamant about receiving (or not receiving) certain colors, you post your preference on your own blog or in the swap-bot comments if you don't have a blog. Knitpicks is just one source of dye your own yarn - you can also purchase light colored sock yarn and overdye.

The idea is to be flexible here, because first time (or relatively inexperienced) dyers know that what you wanted is not always what you get! If I get a good response I'll set up a flickr album to display all the yarny goodness.

Thanks for having this swap... dyeing yarn is something I've wanted to try for a while!

I was going to order some Bare yarn from Knitpicks and dye with Kool-Aid. I wondered if it was best to use the Superwash/Nylon or the Merino Wool.

Thanks :)

I always wonder about the durability of the pure merino yarns for socks. I'v heard stories of people buying some of the fancy ones sold as suitable for socks and still having them wear out really quickly. I'm going to use a wool/nylon blend just to be safe. I'm gentle on socks myself, though, so I don't mind being sent 100% merino yarn.

Fun! I'm about to do my first yarn dyeing experiments, though I've dyed fabric before. I'd be happy with any fiber sock yarn. I'd prefer shades of green for color choice, though purples would be okay too or a big mess of multicolor.

for myself, shades of reds/dark orange mix would be nice. I would like to avoid greens, yellows, black. 100% merino wool is acceptable for me or the knitpicks superwash with nylon is great as well.

ooh, this will be fun! I'm open to any fiber and any color combo, though my fave colors include green, blue & purple, and neutrals, of course. (that doesn't mean you have to use all those colors together or anything, just throwing out ideas.) as long as the colors go well enough together, I'm happy!

user7145 04/ 2/2007 #

I'm happy with any color combo or fiber.

Cassandra 04/ 3/2007 #

it seems like we should have received a partners name yesterday?

user7403 04/ 3/2007 #

I may be too late but can I still join in? If so I like the colors of pink, purple, blue. I really don't like green and orange. Any fiber I guess. I don't really know too much about that stuff. I usually just get whatever floats my boat at the time.

If I am too late maybe I can join in if there is another one. Thanks, Lauren

Ok, sorry folks - there was a family issue and I couldn't get on line the last day or so. You're all matched up now. Have fun!!! I am so excited to see what you all do!

Lauren - I wasn't able to add you - since I was already late in getting matches out I didn't want to delay any further. However, if someone flakes out, I'll contact you as a back up.

I'm happy with any color other than something that is predominantly red. I love brights. Greens and blues are my favorite colors.

I dyed some scratchy, icky wool yesterday after the eggs were finished and it turned out very well I think. I won't use this yarn for this swap as it is definitely NOT right for socks. (But I'm thinking of a nice felted purse...!) This is how I did it:

starfish 15: your yarn went out in the mail today. You should get it in 2 days seeing we both are in NY state.

Sissie: Thanks so much for the great yarn!! Love the lilacy peachy combo. How did you dye it? Did it come out how you intended? Can't wait to knit it up!

spinjenny 04/20/2007 #

Katarina (Ina), thanks for the lovely yarn, and the chocolate! I've uploaded a picture to our swap gallery. I really can spell "chocolate", I just can't type, but I can't work out how to edit the picture description.

Thanks everyone, I hope you enjoyed the swap. We only had one flaker, and fortunately I caught it early and avoided disaster.

Happy Knitting!
