I just read a really cool article by Traci Bunkers entitled "Mail Art Cards On The Edge" from the book Kaleidoscope ideas + project to Spark Your Creativity by Suzanne Simanaitis.

How cool would it be to go to your mailbox and find mail art cards?!?!? I will answer that for you; IT WOULD BE COOL!!!!!!!!!!!

So, save your cereal boxes or cardboard boxes and get busy creating mail art cards. Think ATC but on a slightly bigger scale. They can be any shape, or any size for the matter. One side is where your art goes (and any medium goes, collage, painting, coloring, sewing, pencil, pen, ink etc....) the other side should be addressed to your partners in the manner you would address a post card.

This is an international swap. This swap in for newbies. This swap is for swappers with a rating of 4.0 or higher. If you have a lower rating contact me and we can work out something.

Now, for the preachy part: don't sign up for this swap if you "don't intend to send!" If you sign up and your calendar fills up, all you have to do is drop from the swap.

You will have 5 partners, so make 5 mail art cards.

Let the creating begin.

I did my cards last night and I loved them through step 3 (I used the bottom of a bandaid tin dipped in acrylic). Once I started adding the magazine pages I didn't love them so much anymore. Now I'm in the process of adding more paint. I think I'll start with magazine bits and collage bits first for the next batch, then add paint, then words, then repeating pattern. Thanks for the push to try it ginm! I'm always happiest covered in paint!

Far your cards are going to weigh a ton if you keep on adding..haha...it is great how creativity develops throughout the process! warm wishes, about to make a start on my cards!

Okay I have a question...You do not put this card in an envelope right? The idea is for art to go through the mail uncovered? It sounds fun count me in!

FarStarr 04/13/2007 #

I got inspired last night after all the kids went to bed and made all five of them..I am happy with how they turned out and now all I need is my partners! I wish I would have been able to make an extra for myself but a pic. will have to do. Hurry, Hurry!

I received a really fantastic postcard from Valarie today. It is collaged and painted on both sides with labels, rubber stamped images, paper reinforcements, and a bingo piece - all attached to a cardboard postcard. Incredible work of art! Thanks so much! A diffeent screen name was not given and I didn't see Valarie on our list, but I did want her to know I think this card is GREAT!

Tryph 04/25/2007 #

Mine have been fed to Canada Post today so heads up to sparklebluefaery, TiaBel, creativity, beautyfulcreature and neonmarshmallow.

akacreativity 04/26/2007 #

Hi starwatcher, Thank you for the kind words! I realized after I dropped them into the mailbox that I had only put my real name. So just for fyi it's creativity aka valarie. Did the clear hangy thing make it through the mail??

Ginm, Diamond, Starwatcher, Victoria and Darlene_w, I have finished my cards, they're going to post first thing Monday am. Sorry to be lagging to the end of the time - swap overload! lol

TíaBel 04/30/2007 #

Thanks, Ginm!

This was such a fun project. I'm loving the cards I've received so far from Tryph and FarStarr.

I (mostly) followed the instructions in the book and I learned to be more spontaneous in my use of color. It was great!

Starwatcher 04/30/2007 #

Creativity, No. There was a spot that looked like something had been torn off but I had no idea what it was. I'll try to scan the card tomorrow and you can see what made it and what didn't. I was surprized that anything attached could go through the system - like the bingo marker. Incredible!

user3189 05/ 1/2007 #

Hey everyone. In the midst of moving my craft room I didn't get these mailed out until today. I'm usually early, not late so please be patient with me. Thank you!!! (They're worth the wait. lol)
