We will study the Gospel of John in 7 parts, looking at 3 chapters per study. This is the third part of the 7-part series.

You will read the John 7-9 and then answer the questions below. Send your answers to your partner. Your Q & A may be typed or handwritten.


Chapter Seven

  1. Why do Jesus's half-siblings what him to go to Jerusalem?
  2. Why do the people begin to hate Jesus?
  3. Why do the religious leaders hate Jesus and want to kill him?
  4. What ways does self-righteousness deceive us? Why is this deception so dangerous?
  5. How does Jesus use Isaiah 55:1 to invite the people to come drink? What is He inviting them to believe and do?

Chapter Eight

I've broken this down into different passages to help with finding answers to the questions.

(Verses 1-12)

  1. Does Jesus ignore the woman's sin in dealing with the scribes and Pharisees?
  2. What Old Testament texts are being referenced by calling Jesus "the light of the world"?
  3. How do Isaiah 49 and Psalm 27:1 point to Jesus as God rather than just as a messenger from God?

(Verses 13-30)

  1. How does the Christian worldview differ from the world's in its understanding of self-sacrifice?
  2. What does Jesus benefit from His sacrifice on the cross?
  3. Why does Jesus sacrifice on our behalf?
  4. What does Jesus do after forgiving the woman's sins?

(Verses 31-47)

  1. What are three marks of a genuine disciple?
  2. What does it mean to abide in Jesus's word?
  3. How is the Christian understanding of freedom different from the world's understanding?

(Verses 48-59)

  1. How will those who keep Jesus's word never experience death?
  2. How does Ecclesiastes 3:11 change the significance of physical death?

Chapter Nine

  1. Define legalism. Why is it contrary to the message of the gospel?
  2. How might you fall into legalism during suffering? What can you do to fight against it?
  3. Why does Jesus send the blind man to the pool of Siloam?
  4. Why do the Pharisees instruct the man to give glory to God? What are they actually telling him to do?
  5. What does the man mean when he says, "We know God doesn't listen to sinners?"
  6. What happens to the man when he refuses to do anything other than testify for Jesus?
