Description:

This swap is inspired by a project in the Jan/Feb 2015 issue of Somerset Studio, by Cat Kerr.

The project was a mini canvas made into a necklace, but we're going to adapt the technique to an ATC.

Get your washi tapes out for this one!

The basic technique:

  • Cover your sturdy ATC backing entirely with washi tape, placing it in assorted directions. I used several patterns on mine.

  • Cover with a layer of decoupage medium

  • Add gesso with a dry paintbrush, working the brush horizontally and vertically, but not completely covering the tape

  • Using a pencil eraser (or similar) add dots of paint randomly to the canvas. Dry.

  • Using the pencil point (or similar) add another color of paint to the center of the eraser dots

  • Lightly splatter a third color of paint on top

  • Add an image and wording. Finish off with any final touches that you wish. She used number rub-ons and tiny stars. You might want to add a bit of rubber stamping or a tiny gem or piece of hardware. Just be sure that your lovely background is still visible.

Standard ATC rules apply. Size must be 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches (or 64mm X 89mm). Be sure to use a strong and sturdy backing, not just paper or cardstock. On the back of your ATC, please include your name, date, and name of the swap.

Please message me or post below with any questions. I hope you will have fun trying out this technique!
