Lots of Mail #4 - Cheap and Easy
Swap Coordinator:PostMuse (contact)
Swap categories: Challenges  Miscellaneous  Letters & Writing
Number of people in swap:112
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:May 3, 2007
Date items must be sent by:May 10, 2007
Number of swap partners:5
Description:

The original idea for swap was dreamed up by dreamhope and she hosted the first two, with resounding success. I hosted the 3rd round and had so much fun I decided to go for a 4th.

We all love getting a lot of mail, so this is a super-easy, super-cheap way to exchange lots of mail.

This is an international swap.

Guidelines: Each of your packages should be small and light enough to be sent by regular letter-post, but this is a goal, not a rule. It is important you don't assume your envelope will pass muster with one postage stamp, or that international mail will travel without a customs form. Please check your envelopes with your friendly neighborhood postal employee.

You will be sending one item to each of your 5 partners.

Choose one item from each of the following categories and pick one of your 5 partners to whom to send each item;

  • Something black
  • Something personal
  • Something spring-y
  • Something bright
  • Something local

The items can be found items, bought items, or things you already own, but should always be something you would like to receive yourself. Remember, keep it light and keep it simple! Examples of good items: a magazine or newspaper article, a cartoon, a postcard, a note card, a button or bead, a piece of fancy paper, stickers, stamps, a piece of ribbon or fabric, a tea bag, temporary tattoos, a bookmark, a charm, a quote or joke (something non-offensive, of course), a photo, an Artist Trading Card (ATC)...there are lots of possibilities! Please make sure you include both your username and real name, as well as a note about what category the item falls into.

Also, please try to post acknowledgment on the swap message thread below once you receive an item. It keeps anxiety tamed if senders know their envelopes have arrived.

When it comes time to rate, remember that this is low-expectation swap. Your partner is under no obligation to choose something that suits your profile. As long as you receive something that isn’t garbage with a note about what category it belongs to, your partner gets a 5. And please keep in mind that this is an international swap, so some things will take a longer time to arrive. Let's give each other a break and at least try the messaging system before giving out "1" ratings.

New swappers are welcome, but please read Swap-Bot’s FAQs and make sure you have a completed profile before joining. If you would like to read the threads for the previous rounds they are as follows; Round 1, Round 2, and Round 3.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

This sounds like a lot of fun. And this will probably be one of my last swaps untill after I recover from more surgery in June. I wish I was around for the last three. I went back and looked at the postings and it looks like ya'll had a great time. Thanks HeatherS

racheljohnson 04/ 3/2007 #

I am so glad you decided to jump back in, Postmuse! This sounds like a great swap! xoxo

PostMuse 04/ 3/2007 #

Thank you Rachel :-) I am going to go reeeeeal slow, though. I am such a nervous nora about mail getting lost.

And HeatherS.... this swap is soooo much fun! You get a bunch of smiles in the mail.

Craftlover10101 04/ 3/2007 #

I'm betting it will be. Do you mind me asking about you Jumping back in? Are u ok?

Cloverst 04/ 3/2007 #

Yeah good to see you about! nice formatting ;P

I would sign up if we didn't have a bit of a family medical thing going on here....

PostMuse 04/ 3/2007 #

Did I do something wrong in the formatting???? I used the fancy little converter you posted in the Forum, Cloverst

And HeatherS.... I was getting discouraged by my mail not arriving when I expected it to arrive and the anxiety of not knowing where it was made me crazy and very unhappy. There were other issues, too, but the mail anxiety was the main issue. I'm trying to learn to let it go :-) Very little mail gets lost.... really.... just moves slow sometimes.

harleychick27 04/ 3/2007 #

YAY--I'm in for round 4, glad you decided to play hostess again, PostMuse! :O)

LINBUR0100 04/ 3/2007 #

So, how do you know if your partner actually sent something from each category? I mean, couldn't the person just send all black things to their 5 partners without any way of tracking that?

PostMuse 04/ 3/2007 #

Yes, it could happen that someone sends all from one category, however it is more fun to try to find something from every category. I'm wicked precise with keeping track of addresses, partners, and when envelopes are received, but I for sure won't be paying attention to if all 5 categories were used by each swapper. I think the majority try to find something from each category, or at least they have in the last 3 rounds.

E11enT 04/ 3/2007 #

I love this swap. It is very cheap and easy and fun!- but what I like the most is the challenge to think up something for each of the categories. It challenges my creativity.

The flip side is that it's very cool to see how your partners interpret the categories. Last swap I received 3 orange items, - all very different. Thanks for hosting once again.

Aerochik 04/ 3/2007 #

I just love these quik swaps.,,,,

starrycat 04/ 3/2007 #

Yeah!!! I'm going to play again too!!! I liked this one, lol!

Craftlover10101 04/ 4/2007 #

Hi Postmuse, I understand too. I'm sitting here waiting for things too lol. And when you don't know who it's coming from it could be out of the country which makes it harder to wait for it if you don't know that it's coming that far lol. I know when making swaps we might start putting in that you need to let the partner know where it's coming from. That is always an option. I know some like to make it a surprise. I do like surprises too so it's hard either way to decide how to make a swap up.

twobluecrows 04/ 4/2007 #

This sounds like a lot of fun! I'm joining even though I swore I wasn't going to sign up for nay more for a while--I'm weak! :)

I advise to also put the swap name and your username on the outside of the envelope--I got an empty envie recently with no ID on it except the person's real name and address in the return label--took a while to track her down in all of my many ongoing swaps here and in Yahoo. I didn't have a clue what was supposed to be in it. What a pain! One more reason for me not to sign up for so many! ;)

And on that note also--pack your items well! Use cardboard or padded envies and fork over the extra 13cents for unmachineable mail surcharge--it's worth it if the ATC or whatever makes it through in one piece. Regular paper envies with any lumps or protrusions don't have a chance against the machinery in your local postal distribution center! I'll be making my own envelopes now out of cardstock to try to reduce loss from mangling!

Cyn

harleychick27 04/ 4/2007 #

Hi!

It's one thing to put your user name on the outside of the envelope but I do not think you should say, 'earring swap' for example. I was in a swap where someone (not me) wrote what the item was and several envelopes arrived empty (it was also a 5 partner swap). If one were ripped, okay, but more than one? I think someone saw what was in there and took them out. I used to put the swap name on the outside but won't now if it gives away what's inside to anyone who might have sticky fingers. Sad we have to think of that isn't it? :O)

SueFitz 04/ 4/2007 #

I've enjoyed #3, so why not #4

whimsicalone 04/ 5/2007 #

i just sent my items for #3 and now i can't wait to send them for #4!

Starwatcher 04/ 5/2007 #

3 was a lot of fun, Postmuse! I, too, am glad you are hosting this one also! As for worrying about the mail making it or not, I have found that by entering a bunch of swaps, lots of things come in the mail so if a few are missing I'm not going to be terribly sad over it. I try to frame both outgoing and incoming as "random acts of kindness - with a theme" so that there is little stress involved. I just make sure that I have enough time to fulfill my obligation and then not worry about the rest. at least that is how it works for me. (I am a newbie in this group but have been participating in swaps in other groups for 2 years now. Some things have arrived WAY late, but they are the exception. I know that the people I HAVE met through swaps have been wonderful, kind, very upbeat people and I'm glad to be one of them!

Susi 04/ 5/2007 #

I participated in the last one, and I really tried to make my items interesting. I even did my best to send a card that went along with the category. I sent fabic, recipes and spices, tags papers etc, (in one envy) and I don't remember what else. I did recieve a wonderful package from one partner in the UK, who sent something from each category! It was a marvelous package. I got another envelope, that I'm not sure what it was, the person did not send a note or anything, I just assumed that it was something "unusual" Anyway, I just want to clarify something. In the first part of the description you say that something light and easy, with just one stamp is ok, but might not pass "muster". Then down aways, you give examples of possible items, things that are small light, like a cartoon, an article, a button or beads, shiny paper is ok. So which is it that we need to send? A tiny package, or a simple letter? I love this swap, once I figured out, but now I am seeing something like a mixed message. Am I misunderstanding something? susi

Susi 04/ 5/2007 #

just a question, again, lol...does everyone see stargazers comment in HUGE letters? I can hardly read it! Not a complaint, just curious if there is something wrong with my 'puter! susi

Tambo 04/ 5/2007 #

I see stargazer's text in huge letters, also. It's hard to read! LOL

Susi 04/ 5/2007 #

ok, it's not just me then... I wonder if stargazer knows it's like that? also, I have a suggestion... when you get your envys ready, write the name of the swap on the OUTSIDE of the evelope, as well as the inside, makes things easier to help do rating! I keep envelopes, and sometimes I don't remeber who sent what. I should probably find a system to do this, but I know that when I write the name and the DATE it's due (I'm trying to do that now) it helps alot! susi

harleychick27 04/ 5/2007 #

Hi again, Susi!

Please see my post above about writing swap names on the outside of envelopes... :O)

PostMuse 04/ 5/2007 #

Well, I'm in Detroit. Got a few minutes before we head out to dinner, and then to see Clapton (oh my goodness, I am so excited)!

Susi, send a letter or small item.... totally up to you. I usually end up going the one ounce but usually only just going over. I think if I put one less tiny item in those envelopes I'd stay at the one stamp!

I think what most people like in this swap is the unexpected. You have no idea what is going to be in that envelope, unlike many swaps when you sign up for a specific item. You really can't go wrong with whatever you send :-)

ladydy5 04/ 5/2007 #

Susie, good idea about the envelopes. Lots of time I forget who sent what by the time we can rate our sender. And, the large print on that comment was too much. Gave me a headache.

harleychick27 04/ 5/2007 #

I don't agree about putting the swap name on the outside of the envelope if it tells what's inside the envelope. Too risky for items to be stolen (I guess by the someone working the post office, which is awful). I was one of a few people who rec'd a ripped envelope with nothing inside in a swap where the person had written what was inside the envelope on the outside. I heard that was not the only swap in which something like that happened. For this swap, 'lots of mail', I guess it'd be fine to write that on the outside. :O)

ksj1717 04/ 5/2007 #

Susi,

I bought little $1.00 journal books and a small calendar to keep up with my trades (I'm in too many, I think, but I love it). I put the swap name and who I send what to and then I just write the name and item in when I receive something for that swap. When it's time to do ratings, your info should all be on one page. :)

ksj1717 04/ 5/2007 #

There's a number at the end of the Swap-bot URL code. Maybe we should put that swap number on the outside of our envelopes?

SharonP 04/ 5/2007 #

Kiki, I think you raise a really good point about not putting something on the envelope that identifies the contents if it has monetary value. I am not so concered that putting "lots of mail" on the envelope is a problem. But I think Postmuse makes it clear that there should be a note on the inside with the name of the swap, the category, and your user name. She has it in bold, after all! So, how hard is it to open the envelope to find out what's in it?

As for keeping track of who sent you stuff for rating time, I've taken to posting a message on the swap message board whenever I receive something, and if I have the sender's e-mail address, I send them a message too. That way, when it comes time to rate, it's easy to just search my own posts to be reminded of things. I did not invent that technique, I might add! Several other people have said they do that too. It is helpful, and it's fun to read people's comments about the things they received.

user6615 04/ 9/2007 #

So am I understanding correctly.

Each partner will get 1 item from each cateogry?

Or EACH partner gets an item from one of the categories like there's a chance I will be the partner that will get 5 black items? lol

hELP!

PostMuse 04/ 9/2007 #

There is no way to control what item goes to each participant so, yes, you could get all five items from the same category. In the last round one participant has received 4 items from one category. If there was a way to make it so that people did get an item from each category, we would go for it, but there isn't. It is all a matter of chance.

Craftlover10101 04/ 9/2007 #

So what if we have a perverted mind? lol Cause I just thought of something personal but CLEAN, but thought it was a crack up and I would laugh my butt off if I got what I am thinking up. Would that affend anyone?

Craftlover10101 04/ 9/2007 #

Sorry lol

marcia1977 04/10/2007 #

There is a swap on here for "swap cards" Swap cards are little business card sized cards that have your user name, real name and email address It also has a place for you to write in the swap name and the date sent. I think I may make myself some of these and start including them into my swap packages. You will not need to try to keep envelopes or such, it would have all the info you needed right on the card. Just a suggestion.

marcia1977 04/10/2007 #

HeatherS,

Wouldn't offend me. I have somewhat of a strange sense of humor, to say.

Marcia

PostMuse 04/10/2007 #

I have a story to go with the "something personal" category, but y'all will have to wait until Lots of Mail #5 to hear it :-)

Craftlover10101 04/10/2007 #

lol

Craftlover10101 04/10/2007 #

Well if i get you marcia i'll send it than lol

Craftlover10101 04/11/2007 #

**********If you want to be on an email list of the swaps that I start please email me. This way when I start a new swap I will email everyone on that list.*************

PostMuse 04/14/2007 #

Just a note to anyone watching the participant list. I will not remove anyone from the swap until the swap closes to prevent known flakes from signing up with a different username.

Craftlover10101 04/18/2007 #

I'm sorry but I have to drop out.

LeeAnn 04/22/2007 #

Glad newbies are welcome!!

PostMuse 04/22/2007 #

Not only are new swappers welcome, they are encouraged to join this swap! You get to send to lots of people and the cost is very low. Plus, if you really get into the swap, you can get lots of hearts in your ratings :-) Hearts are for when the sender goes above the swap requirements, but that doesn't mean spending more money. It often means including a lovely note that shows you read your partners' profile. Wicked fun swap! Thank you for joining LeeAnn!

towenby 04/25/2007 #

Thank you for inviting new swappers. I appreciate that so much! I am really looking forward to this swap. It sounds like a lot of fun. I like Marcia's idea of "swap cards" and plan on creating one for myself. Thanks for the idea, Marcia. Terry

PostMuse 04/26/2007 #

Always happy to have new swappers in this swap :-)

Just a note to everyone... I pay very close attention to the participant list and I keep data on ratings history for every participant. If ratings start to slip, I make note and will message the participant. If I don't hear back, that participant is added to my watch list and I will remove them when the swap sign-up closes.

niecedenise 04/26/2007 #

Heather, why are you dropping out. i would like your perverted idea. Not much offends me. Mainly the f word but not much else.

user7548 04/26/2007 #

I'm also a newbie and am looking forward to this swap. Thanks. It's fun to try to figure out neat things to send.

Chickpea - I'm glad you like the cards. Did anyone else receive from me yet?

I have received 2 evies so far.

Hunter&Dane's Momma - I usually wait 2 weeks before I assume something isn't coming, especially if it's coming from far away. I then drop my partners a line and ask if they sent late.

Thats for the advice Saor! :)

shrinkydink 05/22/2007 #

You guys .. I am SO SORRY. I completely spaced and haven't sent my things out yet. What a way to start off my first swap. I had all my envelopes together, ready to mail, then we had a family emergency and things just sort of ... fell apart ... and today I was cleaning out the car and found them .. ready to go to the post office. They'll be out TOMORROW. Again, I sincerely apologize to sparklebluefaery, Ellen, motes, little kitty & MangoGypsy.

Tryph 05/23/2007 #

Mici E THANK YOU! Got my black, personal -(yum!), spring-y, bright AND local things today. Too cool.

PostMuse 06/10/2007 #

I've come to learn that Rose in Georgia (USA) has dropped, or been dropped, from Swap-Bot. At the time the swap ended she had a steady 5.0000. She is now down to a 3.0000. I have not heard from her, but I assume she is just not responding to a barrage of emails from Swap-Bot. We never know what is going on it others' lives so perhaps it is best to just rate her the 1 and leave it at that. She had been a fine swapper up until recently.

Saor 06/12/2007 #

I got my last package. It was waiting for me when I got back from my holidays. A fabulous envie from Betzi with lovely wool, ribbon and library envelopes.Thank you! I loved it.
