Description:

Hi Everyone,

For this swap, we will be creating 3 envelopes from re-purposed or recycled packaging. For example, the craft paper bags from stores like Starbucks, grocery stores, Trader Joe's, etc. Someone also suggested using pages from an old book or an out of date calendar. You will use clean (non-soiled, no food stains, etc) bags or packaging to make 3 envelopes that are sturdy enough to send and actually use for mailing. The envelopes must fit at least a 3" x 4" card inside, but they do not have to be this exact size or all the same size, either. You can include a short note that says something like, "This envelope was re-purposed from a Starbucks shopping bag."

Envelopes made from new patterned scrapbook paper are pretty and nice, but they should not be made for this swap. The purpose of this swap is to open our eyes to reusing packaging and paper that otherwise goes to waste. If you receive 3 envelopes your rating should be a 5 with hearts discretionary.

Can we use pages from books to make our envelopes?

Furie 02/ 3/2020 #

Does it have to be re-purposed packaging? Because I have some old calendars that I plan to make into envelopes.

I think book pages and calendars are great examples to use!

If you want sturdy envelopes, I don't think book pages are sturdy enough @JennLostAndFound

I have an example of how I make my envelopes on my Instagram pilesofpaper

To make my envelopes, I use existing envelopes from which I make a template and I can use this template with different envelopes

@vintagecraft that sounds neat!

@vintagecraft I usually will double up on pages when I make them from books, especially if they are older books or have pages on the thinner side, just a quick layer of some glue stick or spray adhesive will tack two pages together well enough to cut, fold and assemble your envelopes and give them a nice sturdy thickness. :) I have also had pretty good success with sewing to pages together all around the edge with a quick zigzag stitch and then folding and assembling as though its just 1 sheet of paper. Hope that helps.

Hello, repurposed paper of any kind as long as it is clean and not soiled is suitable for this swap. The paper needs to be sturdy enough so that the envelope can be mailed without worry, so if you need to reinforce the paper, keep that in mind. The purpose is to use the envelope as an actual envelope. Thanks!
