Description:

108 Beads (in Paper)

The number 108 has long been said to be powerful. Looking at the numbers, some have said the number 1 stands for God, the universe or your own highest truth; 0 stands for emptiness and humility in spiritual practice; and 8 stands for infinity and timelessness.

Like the mantra Aum, 108 seems to have an essence that connects us to the whole. Be it used to guide sun salutations, to tally up the number of chants to the Divine, to count the steps leading up to a temple, or to measure the structures built for the heavens, it serves as a reminder of the wonder and interconnectedness of the universe.

Traditionally, we see 108 beads in a mala necklace used for meditation. For this swap, we'll make a paper representation of 108! You'll send your partner a version of 108 beads that will fit in an envelope!

Here's the swap -

Make your partner an interesting version of 108 beads. You can use this template or something similar to color. Perhaps take it a step further, and make a nice card with that coloring page, or another image. Or, you can figure out how to actually make paper beads. A flip book or pocket might be nice too. Sender's choice!

There are only three stipulations:

  1. The beads have to be paper. Package carefully, if necessary - No bead bombs, please!
  2. There have to be 108 beads in some format. 2-D or 3-D are equally fine.
  3. There's an expectation of thoughtfulness & creativity!

On that last caveat -- Maybe write a little something in it to your partner about your meditation practice or the colors/stones you prefer to wear in your jewelry. Or include a good quote or reflection. Just a little extension of loving-kindness, something to connect with your partner on a friendly-level, rather than the standard “stuff in an envelope” requirement.

Note: 108 of any one thing is a lot! Cutting or coloring 108 beads might sound intimidating, but it isn't meant to be! This meant to be a playful (maybe even meditative!) making experience. That's why this swap is set a few months out - it'll give us all plenty of time to start that making process now. Partners should be assigned early August (8/3, the 216th day of the year and coincidentally, Raksha Bandhan) and swaps mailed by September 22 (Fall Equinox).

And just for fun, here's a few interpretations of the significance of the number 108:

  • The distance between the Earth and sun is 108 times the diameter of the sun. The average distance from earth to the moon is approximately 108 times the moon's diameter.
  • Were we to draw a five-pointed star (representing a human being) inside a circle (a planet) and we would find 108 degrees staring back at us from every angle.
  • There are 108 energy lines (nadis) converging to form the heart chakra, and 108 marmas (pressure points) or sacred parts of the body.
  • In Western astrology, there are 12 constellations and 9 arc segments. There are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 X 9 = 108. In Vedic Astrology, there are also 27 lunar mansions spread over the four elements, or the four directions. 27 x 4 = 108.
  • The Stonehenge Sarsen Circle is 108 feet in diameter, and the Mayan High Temple of Lamanai was erected at 108 feet tall.
