Description:

Welcome to the "Nature's Whimseys" and a profile surprise swap. Sorry, but due to potential customs issues, the swap is USA-only.

Now, I love collecting little oddities. I have a small chest in my room filled with things I've collected over my years as a military brat. I have a bottle of water that is actually melted snow from Mt. Zugspitze. I've got a Rattler's tail, a gator's tooth. A wolf's tooth. A water buffalo's tooth. I have pieces of antler and velvet I found while running around in the woods playing with my cousins. Unusual seeds. Dried flowers and leaves. Stones with unusual shapes, colors or markings. A rabbit skull found in a field in England. Egg shell pieces from the swans that nested behind our house in England. All of these natural accuring whimseys fascinated the endlessly curious child that I was... And still am. And looking through the chest last night inspired this swap idea.

This is a Whimsey Jar swap.

The jar MUST be AT LEAST 15oz. For reference: A Tostitos salsa or dip jar is exactly 15oz. PLEASE remember to wash your jars very well prior to using them. Decorate the exterior of the jar either in a Natural theme or customized to your partner's profile.

The jar will be filled with Nature's naturally occuring whimseys that you may find out and about on your walks and hikes, camping trips, fishing, ect.

Things such as feathers, stones, gemstones, seeds, DRIED flowers or leaves, pieces of bone or antler or non-chicken egg shells, even dried snake skin. You can even include items that are made from the nature around your area. Such as jewelry, local snacks or ingredients or a handmade craft by you.

You also should include ONE profile surprise of your choice for your partner. It can be store bought, found or handmade. SENDER's CHOICE.

***Please keep in mind that this swap may include parts from animals such as antler, velvet, bone, feathers or tooth pieces one might find out walking around, hunting or might buy localy. Please do NOT join if this offends you.

To senders: IF you do include any animal related items... Please MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLEAN! Wash them up or bleach them first.***

I had intended for the swap to be international, but I had forgotten about the customs issue. So I'm sorry to say this swap will need to be USA-Only. However, feel free to copy this and make a swap for your country if you like it. :)

Shipping:

Please be sure to pack your jar carefully. And keep in mind that postage may be a bit high for mailing a jar. Last time I sent a 15 oz whimsey jar stateside, it cost $10. And postage will be increasing by a few cents here soon. But I am giving plenty of time to save up spare change for postage. ;)

I am going to give plenty of time for people to sign up and find whimseys. Some areas are still covered in snow and will have snow for a while yet. So whimseys may be hard for them to get at the moment.

Since it will be a while till sign up ends and swaps are due to be sent... I will PM all participants two weeks before sign up ends and remove any partially suspended, inactive or questionable swappers before assigning partners. I will also PM everyone a week before the last day to send as further reminder.

To join:

  • You MUST have a filled out profile.
  • You may not have more than one unexplainable 1 or 3 rating. If you have more than one 1 or 3 ratings. Please PM me prior to joining.
  • You must have a 4.5 or higher to join.
  • Questionable Swappers or Swappers whose ratings drop will be PM'd and removed.

There might be some troubles with customs if this swap is international, I know you can't send seeds or plant matter to some countries....

HeideC 02/12/2009 #

Can you send natural bone/feathers/flowers through international post?

MyAliceFair 02/12/2009 #

Ah! Darn. Good point, I forgot about that. I guess I'll need to make it USA only. :(

What a unique swap! I've never done a Whimsy Jar swap, but always wanted to. I'm putting this on my Watch List for now. I have a 12 yr. old grandson who would love to scavenge around for some of "nature's whimsys". =) Aw shoot!! I might as well click "Join". I keep thinking of stuff for this...some I have and some I want to keep an eye out for.

I'm a newbie but would really like to do this, can I please participate?

MyAliceFair 03/21/2009 #

Hello Unicornwy, I'm fixing to send you a message. :)

I've been gathering all matter of great whimsy and trying to figure out how to best clean it up. I found out that many items can be heat sterilized at 250º F for 4 hours. I'm going to give it a try.
