Description:

A myriorama is a panorama made of little cards that can be arranged in any order - the “endless landscape or "polyorama." They were a popular past time in the early 19th century.

They are lots of fun to make!

For this swap, you'll create 9 cards ("ATC sized" using your preferred drawing medium: colored pencil, watercolor, acrylics, pen, pastel, crayon, etc). Then you'll send off three cards to each of your three partners.

Because we'll all use the same template (see below), the 9 cards you receive can be arranged in any order, even though they may not match in style. You might want to make a few extra cards so you have some of your own to play with, too.

Tutorial and Template

I created the tutorial and the template, so if you have questions, please ask in the comments below!

How can I not sign up after the wonderful DIY kit you sent me! Watch me have to send to you though, my drawing skills will make you laugh!

mediatinker 05/ 9/2007 #

The swap's not about drawing skills, it's about having fun making a nifty old-fashioned toy and sharing it. You saw my drawings, I rest my case. :-)

user3674 05/ 9/2007 #

How sad that I couldn't join (I have a recent no-send)

pootle 05/ 9/2007 #

I know these should be hand drawn but is a bit of collage allowed too?

MAM 05/ 9/2007 #

I love this idea! I remember doing these when I was in elementary school, they can be a challenge. They'll probably frustrate the heck out of me now that I'm a perfectionist who likes to make things more complicated than they need to be ;D , but this is going to be a fun one! Can't wait to get started on mine.

TaraInColorado 05/ 9/2007 #

Oh heavens! What fun this looks like. As though I need another art form to get addicted to... I will have to watch and see what you all come up with. Please post pics!!!

mediatinker 05/ 9/2007 #

I think a bit of collage would be fine, but I picture these as mainly drawn. But do them as you like - as long as they are the right size and follow the template, it will be ok.

mediatinker 05/14/2007 #

I didn't note explicitly on the template, but you'll see color swatches on the side. Those are guide colors. Matching them will ensure consistency from card to card, but it's not a firm requirement; as long as you match the edge points the cards will be fine if the colors don't match.

Poppins 05/24/2007 #

This looks like so much fun. I'm fascinated - thanks for sharing the idea and writing such a clear tutorial.

Poppins 05/25/2007 #

I've started playing with the template, and I noticed that there isn't a shade of blue for the sky. Was that on purpose, or are you planning to have us all do a similar blue for that as well but forgot?

(It's so much fun to do these! I've never put such small details on an ATC before, and it's both intimidating and addicting all at the same time.)

mediatinker 05/26/2007 #

I forgot the blue, didn't I? Oops. Any sky blue shade will be fine. I don't think we'll all use exactly the same colors anyway.

Glad you're having fun with them already.

I'm really sorr I have to drop for personal issues :(

mediatinker 06/ 6/2007 #

No worries, Cloverst. There will be future myriorama swaps if this one goes well :-) In the meantime, take care.

I'm having trouble getting my template printed in the right size, anybody want to do a tutorial...printing for dummies?

mediatinker 06/ 8/2007 #

Make sure you save the template file, don't try to print it from your web browser.

If you're using a Mac, you can open it in Preview. If you're using Windows, I'm not sure - maybe Paint?

Confirm that your print settings are 100% "actual size", not "scale to paper" or anything like that.

The image is 300 dpi, which most modern printers do with ease.

alleycat 06/ 9/2007 #

Mediatinker, I use the computer at the library, which has windows....I'm not sure it let's us "save" in the regular way, if I need to save, I save to a floppy, could this be my problem? I just started learning to use a computer a few months ago, and as I am limited to 3-5hrs/week it's pretty slow going, I won't give up yet, I really would like to participate in this swap, it sounds like so much fun!

mediatinker 06/ 9/2007 #

OK, no problem. I've created a "lo-res" version of the template that should print at the right size from your browser. Please see the link in the swap description above.

Have just finished mine and an extra set for me, so I can safely sign up now.

mediatinker 06/11/2007 #

Wow, what a smart idea. I hope you enjoyed making them. I'm going to try to find time for mine in the next couple of days.

sojourner 06/11/2007 #

This has been fun. Looking forward to seeing what others have come up with. Hope everyone posts pictures.

alleycat 06/12/2007 #

Mediathinker, I gotit, thanks, sorry I'm a pain in the patootie...I'll just have to come up with some extra terrific atcs to make up for it!

mediatinker 06/13/2007 #

It was no trouble to make one at web resolution. I didn't even consider that folks might not have access to save the file. Sorry about that!

Poppins 06/13/2007 #

I just put a purple dinosaur on the road on one. Silly, but I don't know that I can bear to give it away now. Good thing I'm making a few extra!

mediatinker 06/13/2007 #

I hope you'll post a photo, even if you keep the card for yourself!

mediatinker 06/15/2007 #

Want you to know that I'll have the swap partners assigned as quickly as I can, but the deadline rollover is a rather inconvenient time of day in Tokyo, so it might be half a day before you see your partners' names. But don't worry; I am on top of it!

user9009 06/15/2007 #

MediaTinker - I didn't realize until I came back out to sign up about the color swatches... and my distant land... specifically... doesn't match.

sojourner 06/15/2007 #

oamyoamy, I for one would not be upset if all the cards did not match up, thats difficult with different styles and colours.

Each set should be looked upon as unique on its own. If they all match thats a bonus.

The only way around that would be for each to only outline draw the scene and send it uncolored to be finished by the recipient!

mediatinker 06/15/2007 #

If the color doesn't match, don't worry. As long as the edge points match up so that the panorama is continuous, everything is fine.

I think the variety in style and variations in color will be a very interesting effect!

mediatinker 06/16/2007 #

Partners are assigned - let's swap!

sojourner 06/17/2007 #

All cards sent Monday 18th June (in Australia) to mediatinker, Mary O & oamyoamy.

mediatinker 06/19/2007 #

MIne are on their way today to MaryO, oamyoamy, and alleycat

mediatinker 06/25/2007 #

ooh, oooh, I've received two sets now and I have been having a great time playing with them!

I realise that the ones I made were a lot thinner than the ones I'm getting. I guess I should have backed them with cardstock. I have a lot to learn... I hope my partners will still enjoy them.

carmen 06/25/2007 #

It pained me, but I sent the original artwork for these. I just got some lovely cards, but but they are clearly nice copies. What is the assumption for swaps like this? It didn't occur to me to ask before.

sojourner 06/25/2007 #

Mine were all originals. Ink & waterclour.

sojourner 06/25/2007 #

carmen I found your myriorama on Flickr, yours too mediatinker, they all look absolutely wonderful. Looking forward to receiving some soon from my partners.

sojourner 06/26/2007 #

Flickr also has cards by Poppins, Ribarnica as well as my own.

sojourner 06/26/2007 #

Two sets of cards arrived today from Poppins & Ribarnica. Thank you both for your creativity.

mediatinker 06/27/2007 #

I sent originals - all nine of mine were different. I didn't think about sending copies, but I think that if they are good quality, there's nothing horribly wrong with that. The endless landscape game can be played equally well with originals or copies. What do you think?

DazzleGuts 06/27/2007 #

I just received myriorama cards that are photocopies and it is disappointing since I have made 9 originals to send out. I will still send the originals though.

sojourner 06/27/2007 #

I always appreciate someones original work, but the swap instructions did not say only the original had to be sent.

MAM 06/28/2007 #

alleycat, your beautiful myriorama set arrived yesterday. Opening that envelope and pulling out those gorgeous hand-painted cards totally made my day! I had been at work almost 12 hours, I was exhausted and crabby, but your little scene gave me a smile. Thanks!

DazzleGuts 06/30/2007 #

dottydotty, ribarnica and Robin Grose - my cards are on their way. Since I had to work today and missed the postal pickup they will probably begin their journey to you on Monday. Mail can take quite a while to travel between Canada and the States, so dottydotty you might get yours first.

MAM 07/ 1/2007 #

pootle, card arrived Saturday. Love the little set!

birdbeth, carmen, and wyld _ ivy, sets went out to you all on Saturday.

sojourner 07/12/2007 #

My final set arrived today from dotty_dotty. Thank you, they are lovely.
