Description:

I love fabric and I love postcards. Let's combine the two!

NOTE: You can do this any way you want, as long as it involves a. fabric or an image of fabric and b. a postcard, combined.

You can make a fabric or quilted postcard, or you can use a photo of cloth on your postcard. You can purchase a postcard that has fabric as a theme: kimono silk or kitschy vintage fabric ads, for instance. You can just show the cloth itself, or you can show it being made, as in handweaving or knitting. It's up to you. Use your imagination and have fun!

You will have three partners. To each partner, send one fabric-themed or fabric postcard.

Again, your postcards can be made or bought. You can use photos or include actual fabric. (Just be sure the fabric is affixed well enough to go through the post intact, please.)

Write a little note on the card about why you chose or created what you did.

Everybody has a different preference, but mine is to have the card written on and not mailed in an envelope, so that's what we'll do in this swap.

As a simple courtesy, please post in the comments thread when you send your postcards out and when you receive them. And when it's time, please rate your partner based on the swap description, not whether the postcard was to your taste. Thanks!

Newbies welcome with a full profile; minimum rating of 4.5 for everyone else, please. Any questions, contact me.

This is an international swap.

Wow! Quiet bunch. Thank you all for joining!

TerryF 05/23/2007 #

You did such a good job on the description, SummerLion, you left no room for questions! lol

SummerLion 05/23/2007 #

That was with your help, of course. ;)

likeiloveyou 05/24/2007 #

This sounds like a fun swap and I already have an idea!

Also, I share your prefered way of postcard mailing. I always worry that my postcards are going to get beat-up in the mail if they don't have an envelope.

SummerLion 05/24/2007 #

Thanks for joining, MadMadam! One note tho: I prefer that the cards not go in envelopes. I like the stamps and cancellation and a bit of wear from the travels. The fabric cards I've seen have gone thru the post amazingly well.

TerryF 05/30/2007 #

I have sent and received a lot of fabric PCs and they have always arrived in very good shape.

SummerLion 06/ 2/2007 #

I've assigned partners... Please let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Thanks for signing up for this one!

sienna 06/ 3/2007 #

Mine are ready - will be sent as soon as I get stamps tomorrow!

SummerLion 06/ 4/2007 #

Some interesting links on this page, especially to vintage embroidered postcards...

http://inaminuteago.com/blog/index.php/archives/2005/01/23/fabric-postcards/

Not all links work, but the ones that do are good.

Hope you guys are having fun. I'm still deciding what to do. (Playing.)

TerryF 06/ 6/2007 #

Me too, SummerLion - a gazillion ideas and no focus! lol

TerryF 06/ 6/2007 #

Very interesting PC Melanie - thx!

ArtfulAmy 06/ 8/2007 #

All my cards are ready for the post on Saturday.

PostMuse 06/13/2007 #

I got two cards today and I am so very impressed. My own cards are still on the art table. I can't get them to look like I imagine them in my head :-(

PostMuse 06/13/2007 #

On another note, I am happy to scan and upload the postcards I received, however I want to check with the artist for permission to do so.

SummerLion 06/14/2007 #

Oh... I've never thought to do that. :(

Wonder why I assumed it was okay?

If anyone objects to having pix of her work posted, please alert your partner.

toscabelle 06/14/2007 #

Yarntails, JuJu and Sacratomato- your postcards went out in yesterday's mail.

likeiloveyou 06/15/2007 #

Spin Jenny, Autumn Moon and SummerLion - your postcards are in the mail.

I also posted pictures on Flickr. Please don't look if you want a surprise.

SummerLion 06/15/2007 #

spinjenny, TiaBel and Autumn Moon: your PCs are headed to the post office. Will post pix on Flickr in a couple of days.

TerryF 06/15/2007 #

Summerlion, MadMadam, send my family a postcard, I made your PCs today and mailed them out this evening, just under the wire. It's been a hectic week! Please be patient, mail from Canada is so darn slow. Thx. Terry

TerryF 06/15/2007 #

Thanks, Marlene, for the gorgeous fabric PC - will post a pic this weekend. T.

spinjenny 06/16/2007 #

Am I the only swapper who gave up and sent printed cards instead of making my own? I hope my partners (TiaBel, carmen and DebFerguson) aren't too disappointed, but it is the only way I could get them out in time. I did hang on and not send till yesterday's deadline in the hope I would suddenly find a few extra hours and some inspiration.

SummerLion 06/16/2007 #

spinjenny, nobody should be disappointed. Printed cards are just great, especially if they're something you like. Remember: This was supposed to be fun -- and a "do it your way" sort of swap. (Says the woman who stressed herself silly because of the bubbles in the fabric and is considering sending print postcards, too, just in case...)

TerryF 06/17/2007 #

I received a printed PC from Melanie Noll, and it was very thought-provoking - I wasn't disappointed at all!

spinjenny 06/18/2007 #

Thanks for the reassuramce. :-)

dandelion 06/18/2007 #

Hey, spinjenny! I sent out printed postcards, and I too worry that my partners will be disappointed that I didn't make an actual fabric pc!

I've received wonderful postcards from Nina in Norway and artfulamy!! :D

spinjenny 06/19/2007 #

I received a beautiful patchwork postcard from MadMadam this morning - thanks!!! And I just realised that I didn't post here that I received a lovely sewn postcard from Auntumn Moon, though I did remember to rate it - thanks for that too!

TaraInColorado 06/19/2007 #

Hi guys, Just sent mine out today--so sorry for the lateness--this past week has been very hectic with a couple of family emergencies (all worked out now and everything's fine, but involved unexpected house guests and an ER trip! yow.) I've received two great cards so far--thanks!

ArtfulAmy 06/19/2007 #

I've received all 3 of my textile cards....this was such a fun swap to see the creativity come thru the mail. All 3 of my cards were different and beautiful. I hope you do another textile postcard swap, I've been inspired and would like to continue to practice sewn cards. Thanks for doing this swap.

SummerLion 06/19/2007 #

MadMadam, your beautiful postcard arrived today, completely and perfectly intact. I'm really amazed the rosette came thru all the machinery and possible rough handling with no damage. Thank you!

SummerLion 06/19/2007 #

I'm really happy that you seemed to enjoy this. I think I will start another, with a new rule: No stressing!

;)

Will post the link here when I do start the swap.

You guys made this one great! Absolutely no no sends: Hurray! Thank you all!

SummerLion 06/20/2007 #

Okay, Round 2 is up and running. Please join, and tell your friends!

TerryF 06/21/2007 #

SummerLion, thanks for the pm about round 2. Unfortunately, I cannot join as I will be out of the country in July, but I do hope it goes well! Will keep a look out for a possible round 3 later this summer...

SummerLion 06/22/2007 #

Oh, shoot, TerryF. Have fun on your travels. I'll let you know about round 3.

SummerLion 06/22/2007 #

Received a postcard from send my family a postcard with a photo of a magnificent piece of kente cloth. Thank you so much! I used to have a small collection of it, and I really appreciate the weaving.

SummerLion 06/23/2007 #

TerryF: I love your postcard. The colors are perfect! And of course I adore butterflies. Plus, I really like the way you constructed the card wit a foam core. It came thru the post perfectly. Thank you!

TerryF 07/ 6/2007 #

Tara in Colorado: Such a neat postcard postcard! Thx! Terry (pic posted)
