Description:

Spoken word recordings first became possible with the invention of the phonograph by Thomas Edison in 1877.

The term "talking book" came into being in the 1930s with government programs designed for blind readers, while the term "audiobook" came into use during the 1970s when audiocassettes began to replace phonograph records. In 1994, the Audio Publishers Association established the term "audiobook" as the industry standard.

Swap: send your partner any commercially printed postcard/notecard or letter with the list of your favorite audiobooks. Can be your all-time favorite, or recently discovered favorite.

Things to ponder:

  • do you remember your first audiobook (even as a kid?)

  • do you have favorite narrator(s)?

  • did you listen to a narrator read one genre and love it, but when he/she narrated in a different genre, you were jarred?

  • do you enjoy when the author or celebrity narrates their own books?
