Description:

I'm a complete pack rat when it come to collecting interesting bits of scrap paper, catalogs, magazines, fabric and junk mail items. I love to use these items to make collages and postcards. I figure others collect exciting items too, and I thought it would be fun to be inspired by someone else ephemera.

This is for swappers, who love to make handmade bookmarks, postcards and collages out of recycled and reused materials.

In this swap you will fill a #10 envelope with pieces of scrap paper, catalog or magazine pages, fabric and/or junk mail items. They can be any size, shape, pattern or color. If you include junk mail items, make sure you DO NOT include any of your personal information (i.e. account numbers, credit card numbers etc.)

You will send 1 completely full envelope to 1 partner.

Please include items that you would like to receive! Make sure there is something exciting, beautiful, or interesting about your items! You want your partner to be inspired to make art with your items.

I'm a packrat too - watching for now

This is a very clever idea for a swap - I'm in.

Feline369 06/24/2009 #

I love this idea, but what exactly is a #10 envelope? Are the sizes clearly marked?

grimmlynn 06/30/2009 #

Yeah, I have to know what a #10 envie is, too. Watching for now! Great idea for a swap.

A number ten envelope is a large letter sized envelope. It typically measures 9.5" x 4.125." It's basically the typical letter envelope that people send. (Sorry for the complicated description.)

AncientPlanter 06/30/2009 #

They're called Business-sized envelopes.

I'm watching this one. Sounds good, except I'm a little hesitant about the junk mail items that can be included. While I use all the other stuff you mention, I never use junk mail in my art and whatever junk mail stuff I got would end up in the recycling.

stellar3mailart 07/ 7/2009 #

I often re-use junk mail envelopes as the base of my postcards. Sometimes I like to play with sticking things inside, so that you can see them through the windows. But I know that not everyone finds these inspiring.

AncientPlanter- I understand your hesitation and if you decide to join the swap, I will ask that your partner refrain from sending junk mail items in your envelope.

I don't want to start something here, but isn't this swap about sending anything we want including junk mail? I personally think that this is for everyone. I joined this swap because I liked what I read in the instructions. I don't want to get a low rate because I sent some junk mail (in good taste of course). Is this going to change?

stellar3mailart 07/ 9/2009 #

Since the purpose of this swap is to send random paper items that someone will be inspired to use in their ART, I think it is reasonable to ask your partner not to send junk mail if you do not use it. However, since junk mail is explicitly stated in the swap description, it would be unethical to give someone a low rating because you received some. I hope this clear up any confusion.

n03mi63 07/ 9/2009 #

This is not very clear to me, I'm sorry. I think you should change that in the instructions so everybody ask their partner what (s)he wants and what (s)he doesn't want. I don't think anybody is going to send unusable stuff. I don't think we should deviate from this, unless you state it in your rules. Don't get me wrong, I love this swap. That's why I want to make sure I send the right stuff.

Cassidymonster 07/ 9/2009 #

I just joined but would love to try this swap. I want to make sure that what we send is just extra/scrap items like fabric, stickers, etc. I know it cant possibly be that big because #10 envelopes wont hold too much but this would be great

Lishmo 07/12/2009 #

This sounds like an interesting swap. I haven't used junk mail in my crafting, but I wouldn't mind receiving some unusual bits. I think the idea here is to send a good VARIETY of different items- catalog, magazine, junk mail etc. Am I right?

stellar3mailart 07/13/2009 #

For sake of simplicity. The parameters of the swap are listed above and haven't been changed. Please refrain from make specific requests, as I do not require the other swappers to follow them. Thank you!

grimmlynn 07/17/2009 #

This looks fun and I am thinking about joining. I get interesting junk mail sometimes and cut images out of them before it goes into the recycling bin, so I hope it's not a problem. Has anyone ever seen Junkmail Gems? It is very inspiring and could definitely give a new perspective on junk mail.

grimmlynn 07/17/2009 #

OH! I meant to ask this in my post above, but forgot! What about fronts of greeting/note cards? I am always saving the neat designs and making tags and bookmarks! Would those be okay to send, too?

raeraethejetplane 07/20/2009 #

Already putting interesting scraps aside. I do ATCs and LOVE patterns so I be really excited if some one sent the trimmings from their scrap book paper. As long as it's 3.5" long I'm sure I can find a use for it.

imakebelieve 07/20/2009 #

What is the weight the envelope can be? Should we go for keeping it within the starndar postage amount?

stellar3mailart 07/21/2009 #

The requirements say "completely full." Most likely your envelope will go over the standard postage weight. (for example I put 4 stamps on mine.)

fepamplona 07/21/2009 #

I really like this swap, and decided to make clear that i only use in my scraps used stamps and similars only. But any kind of paper scrap is welcome (i do a lot of ATCs and inchies). And i dont use a lot of fabric so...I rather get nice wool or anything like that! =)

fepamplona 07/21/2009 #

Lol, i forgot something: i use stamps as JUNK MAIL! Please do not send only stamps or i´ll cry!! >.< I love different kinds of papers, stickers, magazines, anything related!!
