Description:

The Galactic Association of Silly Persons and the Complicated Swap Lovers are hosting this super special swap in which we alter/embellish/make fabulous an item that a partner sends to us before sending the item on to our own partner. Here's how it will work:

Step One: Sign Up - the swap is open to any member in good standing of either group that has completed at least one swap in either group and received a rating of 5 for the swap. In the comments below please list the name of any group swap you participated in order to help me verify requirements before assigning partners. If you have recently joined one of the groups, don't feel sad - we'll be doing this again in the future, I'm sure!

Step Two: After partners are assigned you will have one week to send your send-to partner one item that you wish for them to alter. You might start thinking about something now so that you're not crunched for time. You also might want to have a couple differently sized items in mind in case your partner ends up being in a faraway country (you know, because of shipping costs).

Step Three: When you receive your item to alter, take a photo of it, then get to altering! Have fun with it! Do whatever you want. Get creative!

Step Four: Take a picture of the item after you altered it. Send the item that you have altered to your send-to partner, the same one you sent an item to at the beginning of the swap.

Step Five: Wait for your artfully altered surprise item to arrive.

Step Six: Give your partner some time to receive their item then post your before and after photo in the designated thread in your group's forum.

Phew! Got all that? Let's recap via an imaginary situation...

I am assigned Flora as a partner. I send her a pillow to alter. I kiss it goodbye because it will not be coming back to me. She will be sending it on to HER partner after she alters it. A few days later I get a birdhouse in the mail from Tootsie. I take a photo of it, then cover the whole thing with mirrors, fake eyeballs, and feathers and spray paint the whole thing hot pink. Then I take another picture and send it on to Flora who rates me a 5 even though it looks ridiculous (because I did follow the rules, after all!). A week later I get a lamp that Tootsie altered. It's got shark teeth hanging from the shade and snail shells glued all over it. I post my before and after pictures in the group forum. What fun!

This can be a lot of fun if everyone cooperates. I'll be very diligent about checking in with everyone and making sure everything goes smoothly. If someone flakes I will be hunting them down (seriously) and I will also take the flaker's place and make sure you get to participate fully. But still, don't flake! The fun part of this is going to be seeing what your partner does with the item you send. The photo posting is important - don't skip that step! If you have any questions please let me know.

Have fun!

Note: I'll be on vacation until July 23rd and will address any questions when I return.

Thanks!

I'm a new "GASP"-er; so I can't join yet; but how cool to have a joint swap between groups. (Ummmm, that sounded bad . . .not swapping "joints' . . .ummm, well, you know what I meant) LOL

I have a question: Does it matter if the item we alter ends up looking kind of ugly?

Furthermore, seeing as i live in Australia, what happens if i am sent a large/heavy item to alter? I can't afford expensive postage, so is there some arrangement we can make for international participants so that in this case only small-ish items get posted?

Ohhh sounds like fun! I'm brand new to GASP though and have to get a swap under my belt. I'll definitely join in next time. Sounds fun!

I shall put on my thinking cap and come up with some options of what to send before I commit. I am personally on an altered clothing kick at the moment but I know many people are not handy with a needle or sewing machine. So I shall keep thinking.

Sounds like a lot of fun but it's a bit beyond me now. Enjoy!

This sounds like a blast! I joined GASP not too long ago but I've been a member of "Complicated" for awhile and have completed both "How to Make an ATC" swaps, "Exquisite Corpse" and the "Complicated Writing Prompt." Unless I'm maimed or dead, I always follow through on my swaps. :)

luvscrappin 07/12/2009 #

I would love to join next time. I will be away most of August. Please PM me if you do this again. This sounds like a blast!

voodooninja 07/12/2009 #

hey Jen, do I for real need to list group swaps i've participated in here?

Dogluvr 07/12/2009 #

I'm in Complicated... I think I have just the item to alter.

KimberCow27 07/12/2009 #

Oh man! This sounds soooooooooooooo fun!

I hope you'll be doing this again in the VERY near future!

snailgirl 07/12/2009 #

Wow Cool!!! I am from the complicated crew, and have done the complicated how to atc swaps... and I have a garage full of items I cant bear to part with "cause someday they will be art" This sounds perfect!!

Artistic 07/13/2009 #

Awesome, silly, fun idea!! On my watchlist for later this summer (and to give me time to think of an item).

BastCrystal 07/14/2009 #

This sounds like SO much fun! I'm from the complicated group and have participated in several swaps, both ATC and altered items. :-) I also think I have just the item. ;-) And it's not too heavy, in case I get international.

I have done a couple/few GASP swaps including "Decorating our Special Rooms", and GASP WTF Book swap. :)

I'm back from vacation and thrilled to see so many people have joined. This is going to be fun. To answer some of your questions... PeanutButter - I did mention in step two that people should have several differently sized items in mind in case their partner is not in the U.S. to be considerate of shipping costs. This has the potential of costing a bit more for shipping costs than some other swaps, so bear that in mind when joining. I think most people will be considerate in this regard, though, so I wouldn't sweat it. JustIngrid - I can think of a lot of things I can do to clothing that don't involve a a needle or machine! Don't let that stop you! SnailGirl - Collecting things that can become art is something I tend to do, too, hence... this swap! VooDoo - No, silly. I'm glad everyone is enthused about the swap and can't wait to get started. The timeline is going to go very quickly. After we do the first send I'll check with everyone to make sure they've gotten their item to alter in a timely manner and we'll adjust by a few days on the send date if we have to, so don't let that stress you. I'll be PMing reminders out as we go along. Let me know if you have any other questions...

Ok - I've been watching and have decided to take the plunge. I am in ... i have done the "how to make an atc..."

Ok - my question, since i am in both groups and signing up for this swap, what if i get partnered with myself?

(i hope you know i am just kidding)

Everyone should have received an email from me, but just in case, here's some important info: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SEND YOUR PARTNER AN UNALTERED ITEM NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, AUGUST 14TH!!! It is critical that everyone meets that deadline so we have plenty of time to alter the item and make it fabulous!

redsockz 08/ 4/2009 #

WooHOOOO...Just went to the post office and sent mine out.

euphoria 08/13/2009 #

My item is on its way as of two days ago. :)

snailgirl 08/18/2009 #

I just sent mine today... I missed the email... oops...

euphoria 08/21/2009 #

Rec'd my item to alter - whoo-hoo! This should be fun. :)

snailgirl 08/24/2009 #

Thank you for moving the deadline back!!!

euphoria 09/10/2009 #

Sent my altered item on 8/24 - this was so much fun!

redsockz 09/13/2009 #

Sent my altered item on 9/10! Hope you like it! :)

JenDiggityDirt 09/17/2009 #

Looks like I'm not the only one who is a bit late on this one. Please make sure you let your partners know what's going on if you haven't sent yet! Can't wait to see the results of this swap!
