Description:

I had fun with the "easy adjective infusion" swap, so I wanted to host another word-related postcard swap. Here's one that will give you a chance to share a word that you particularly like.

Think of a word that you find interesting or peculiar or that you're otherwise fond of. Maybe you like its etymology, maybe you think it's fun to pronounce, maybe you were struck by the way a particular author used it, maybe you remember when you spelled it in a spelling bee, etc. Send that word on a postcard along with an explanation of what you like about it. That's it! Any word in any language is fair game as long as you write about why you chose it. You will have 3 partners for this swap and will send 1 card to each; you can use the same word for all of your postcards or not. It's up to you.

Your postcards can be store-bought or home-made. The picture on the postcard doesn't need to relate to your word, though you're welcome to use a card that has a connection to your word if you'd like. And, of course, remember to put your name/username on your postcards so that your partners can thank you and enter a rating.

Other details: 1) Newbies with completed profiles are welcome. 2) Anyone with a rating lower than 4.5 will be dropped. 3) Sending a hand-made postcard in an envelope (to protect it) is fine for this swap. 4) This is an international swap.

Keep these coming!!! I loved the last swap and this one is just as awesome!

CandyStar 05/26/2007 #

Question - does it matter what's on the postcard? Like could we just buy a postcard from our area and then write on the back about our word? Or should we dress it up and make it relevant

-Jesse

beckra 05/26/2007 #

Jesse/Candy Star: The postcard doesn't have to relate to the word, though it can if you want it to. I'll edit the swap description to make that clear. Thanks for asking for the clarification!

paperholic 05/27/2007 #

Well, as a wordaholic I couldn't resist this one - it was about time I had another trawl through my 25+ dictionaries! I know, I know, how could anyone need that many dictionaries?

Well, of course, I don't "need" them, I just find words fascinating, and all the dictionaries are different: I have the Shorter OED (doesn't everyone?), a (for some reasons I actually have 2) Reverse Dictionary (look up a description to find the word for it) and a thesaurus. I have books on all sorts of words: words to offend and insult with, weird words, difficult and confusing words, weasel words, curious and interesting words, language most foul, troublesome words, old words, new words, etc, etc. And of course a fair few books on word usage.

I also have a few books just containing made-up words: feelings or situations that there was no one word for, but that the authors believed the world needed a word for.

So, my question is, can these made-up words be used as well?

beckra 05/27/2007 #

paperholic: Yesterday I was actually thinking that another round of this swap could be specifically devoted to made-up words, so maybe I'll host something like that down the line; in the meanwhile, if you want to use a made-up word for this swap, that's fine! (Just be sure to cite the person who made it up.) And thanks for joining in!

paperholic 05/30/2007 #

Thanks Beckra - it's not as if I haven't got plenty to choose from!

SueFitz 05/31/2007 #

I've had fun finding my words for the adjective swap.

PostMuse 06/ 3/2007 #

I love reverse dictionaries, paperholic. And have you read C.J. Moore's In Other Words: A Language Lover's Guide to the Most Intriguing Words Around the World? Lovely little book.

I had my word all picked out for this swap because this one word plays a huge role in a favorite novel, however I read a comment today that has caused me to reconsider my word. I couldn't ask for a better way to muse away the hours.

POSTMUSE - I thought for a minute I needed to dash out and buy another book on words, but on checking my bookshelf I discovered I do have CJ Moore's book! I accidentally pushed "I sent my items" on the wrong swap and I haven't actually sent yet, but they will be done this weekend and posted on Monday.

Btw, LOVED this swap. Usually everyone looks at me funny when I say I have favorite words. :) I like the ones that "taste" good--they just kind of roll off your tongue and you want to say them again because it was fun.

Hi everyone! I got a neat card from Marigold today. Her word was peripatetic. That's a tough one... but a good one! I'll remember it now, that's for sure!

Carmen

SUMMERLION - got your card today. I agree, they are all lovely words (Chalcedony, Calliope and Celadon).

spinjenny 06/19/2007 #

I received my card from Nicole Introvert this morning. Her word was dysmorphia (badness of form) - an interesting word which feels nice to say even though it denotes an uncomfortable concept. Thanks!

Melanie Noll, I love "pieton." Made me think of "pied-a-terre," which I like for the same reason. Yay, footers!

Miss Alissa - I got your postcard. At least I think it must have been yours, but I couldn't find a sender's name on it. Thanks Isis
