Description:

D.I.Y. Craft Matchbox

Take one 250ct matchbox (approx. - see end of description). Cover it. Fill it with everything you need to teach someone a new craft! Your matchbox should contain:

  • Basic instruction tutorial and/or diagrams
  • A project
  • 2 or 3 essential items to complete the project

(N.B. Tutorial & project to be written by you - please don't copy & paste a tutorial or project you have found online or that came with a purchased kit)

The tutorial can be presented as a booklet or as a folded sheet, and should assume the recipient has no prior knowledge of the craft. The project can be presented separately, or be combined with the tutorial (e.g. if your project instructions explain & show everything your partner needs to know to complete the project, additional technique guides may not be necessary.).

You don't need to include basic craft items, such as a pen, scissors, craft knife, paper glue, stapler etc. But work on the assumption that your partner has never tried this craft before, and won't own the speciality materials (like cross stitch fabric, or modge podge, or lino, or whatever). You do not need to provide every item required to complete the project, but do include any speciality items your partner won't have if they are new to the craft.

N.B. If it won't fit in the box, choose another craft!

This swap is sender's choice, because you need to have knowledge of the craft you are kitting out!

Here are a couple of templates that I have found online for 250ct matchboxes (the dimensions vary quite significantly, so bear this in mind if your partner's box is not exactly the size you expected):

Deb Duz Scrappin Template - measures approx. 2.6 x 5.5 x 9cm.

HelenJoy's Swap Bot Template - measures 3 x 7 x 12cm (this is the size of a standard size box of UK 'cook's matches').

Ratings of 5 or just below only, and at least 5 postal swaps. I will check through participants & remove people I think are a potential risk, so please PM me to explain any unjustified comments or ratings, and I will take that into account. I just don't want to see anyone disappointed in return for their hard work.

(Please check out my group Zines, mail art & other cool stuff for more swaps like this :-).

Great idea for a swap! Watching it, to see how much time I have closer to the deadline...

Swap looks great - sadly I only have three postals...ah well!

Oops - just realised I forgot to include any matchbox templates in the original swap description; they're there now!

Does it have to be an "unusual" craft? or something they have never done before?

TangleCrafts 10/19/2009 #

No, it just has to be something that you know well enough to give clear how-to & project instructions. If you make dotees, it could be a doll kit; if you do cross stitch, it could be a cross stitch kit; if you make altered ATCs it could be an ATC kit etc. If you can combine what you already know with something your partner says on their profile they would like to learn, great! But it's sender's choice, and not profile-based.

You should be rated on making a great kit, not whether your partner can already do it, or not!
