What is UNESCO?

NymphetMaggot 11/29/2009 #

For those who don't know, UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. Basically, it's an organization that was started as a way to promote educational collaboration and peace and unity. Basically, they try to uphold the UN charter so everything they do is to further universal respect for justice, law, etc. They also do a lot to try and preserve archaeological dig sites from looters and in places such as Iraq where war is rampant.

Oh, one world stuff. No thanks!

By UNESCO, we usually mean UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can find further info here:

http://whc.unesco.org/en/about/

There is also a link to the list of the over 800 world heritage sites here:

YooperHill, I am not sure what you mean by "one world" stuff, but I do know that UNESCO sites are the most educational and historical places I have ever seen. Very beautiful places rich in history. Most people love the cards with photos of these great places.

I only have cards from my area - a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Is that alright?

tiggerski 12/ 1/2009 #

What country is that from? Is it on the list at the link above? Almost every country in the United Nations has UNESCO sites. Taiwan is not part of the UN so they don;t have any, but they have some beautiful places that should be.

wunderland 12/ 2/2009 #

The Bay of Fundy in Canada :)

Biosphere Reserves, although administrated by UNESCO, are not WH sites - and are not on the list in the above link ... so I'm out :(

For example, YooperHill, Everglades National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So are Independence Hall and the Statue of Liberty.

(i need to make sure I have 2 UNESCO postcards before I sign up - I have at least 1 from Cahokia Mounds since we visited this past year, but I'm not sure that I have any others on the list)

Blank postcards in an envelope gets you a heart from me.
