Description:

Here's a book of the month club with a twist! Each month, I will feature a different theme and you must send your partner a book with a title related to the theme.
This month's theme came from @hydro75 and is in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. You will send one "royalty" book to your one partner, along with a note or letter as to why you chose that book and anything else you might like to say. Books do not have to be about royalty, just have the word "royal" or any type of royalty in the title (ie. "The Return of the King" by JRR Tolkien or "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.) Genre is open and up to the sender, but must be a readable book. Books can be used, but must have both covers and no missing pages.
Swap is open to anyone with a 4.5 rating and no recent no-sends or 1 ratings. Please do not sign up if you do not think you will be able to send. I will be checking profiles before assigning partners and reserve the right to ban anyone who seems sketchy.

I love these! Thanks for using my suggestion! :)

I definitely enjoy these swaps and think the theme is great.

...but, maybe an African-American theme or civil rights based theme might be more appropriate to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I mean, from Maya Angelou to Nora Zeale Hurston to Langston Hughes to Octavia Butler - there is a rich pool to choose from and share. Even books that discuss or touch on the subject like "Secret Life of Bees" or "The Help".

I think there's a richer meaning that can be gained by honoring such a powerful and poignant man in history.

Could you open this up to both?

Wow... don't I feel silly and small right about now... :P In my own defense though, this particular swap (which bookwyrmm hosts every month) isn't necessarily about tackling "heavy" subjects (though sometimes we do!), but more about sharing a diverse selection of books, using a keyword or theme as a jumping-off point... I can't speak for everyone in the group, but for me, it helps me "think outside the box", jog my memory about books I read a long time ago, and share great books I might not otherwise have thought about.

@Stacirose -I don't want to speak for the host, but I think most of us have had a book in mind since we signed up for this swap (or I have, at least)... but of course you are always welcome to start your own swap like the one you described. Heck, I would probably join! :)

I've participated in these swaps before and love 'em! This one seemed a bit...off mark to me. Honoring an African American author doesn't have to be that "heavy" - Octavia Butler is a Sci Fi author.

When I wrote in the forums I thought of six different authors, so I'm not sure where the difficulty lies. I hope to be a part of the next swap - I really do appreciate them. :)

And, I think it would be nice to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a swap. Thanks for the idea! :)

Stacirose, as hydro75 said, the point of these swaps is simply using a keyword as a jumping off point and in no way are meant to be serious. I am sorry if you were offended by this topic, but feel free to start your own swap for African-American (or maybe even African) authors, which would be amazing.
