This swap is based on the amazing book, Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio. The authors traveled around the world, photographing families with a week's worth of groceries. Each family portrait gave insight into the effects of culture, economic status and globalization on the world's food choices. You can read more about the book in this NPR story.

In this swap, we'll each create our own miniature version of a food portrait. We'll photograph everything we eat in one day - so a photo of breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks. Unlike the photos in the book, these photos can be of individual meals rather than one portrait. And, you don't need to appear in the photos...unless you want to!

Print the photos (on glossy paper if you have it), and on the back of each include some information about the meal or food it contains. Include recipes, where available. Talk about why you chose this particular food. Is it something you eat every day? Or was it a special occasion? Maybe include a little history about the food if it's something that's unique to your city or country. If you get an international partner, including some overseas food labels or packages might be fun.

I'm really excited to see these photos! This is an international swap :D If you don't have a feedback score yet, please email before signing up.

Love this idea. I have the book and it is amazing. I'm not a clever photographer, but I'm going to give this a try.

inkysquid 07/ 7/2007 #

Great!!!

I recently bought another of Peter Menzel's books - Material World. It's photographs of people with all their possessions. Definitely worth checking out!

earthnk 07/ 7/2007 #

I've never heard of this author but you've piqued my interest so I'm checking him and his books out and see if this is doable for me before signing up. What a great idea for a swap.

YS 07/ 7/2007 #

Hi I have a silly question, must I print the photo on glossy photo paper? Thanks

inkysquid 07/ 7/2007 #

YS: If you can, great...but if not, don't let that hold you back from joining the swap! :D

CandyStar 07/ 8/2007 #

OH! I thought we were sending them digitally... It would be tons cheaper to do it that way. Ink is expensive and so is developing pictures, especially if you're taking more than one... but maybe I'm just a cheapskate.

-Jesse

inkysquid 07/ 8/2007 #

Hi Jesse - In this swap the pictures will be sent by snail mail...but perhaps we can do a digital version of the swap in the future.

PostMuse 07/ 8/2007 #

I'm glad it is snail mail delivery 'cause I love snail mail :-) I get my digitals developed online for about 11¢ each and have them delivered to a local chain drugstore for no extra fee. Right now I have a coupon for even cheaper developing, so I'm going to try to do my photos soon and have it all ready to go once the swap starts.

YS 07/ 9/2007 #

Hmm I have a suggestion, can we save the photos in CD before sending out?

inkysquid 07/10/2007 #

YS: Perhaps if there is absolutely no way for you to print your photos. But, to make the package interesting for your partner, please include some related paper items, like written recipes, notes, foreign food packages, etc. :D

secretspynik 07/14/2007 #

Okay, this is a silly question. I eat alot through-out the day, but not usually at exact times, like I dont really eat 3 obvious meals, will it be okay if I just take whatever i eat?

PostMuse 07/15/2007 #

I think the cool thing about this swap is in addition to seeing what people eat, we may see how people eat, whether it is three meals a day, sitting at a table, or 10 meals eaten in many different places. Snacks, too. I really don't think there is any one correct way to each. Everyone needs to find the way that works for them. I think it is only the really lucky people who truly enjoy their food all the time.

I am already thinking of how to make this a photo journal. I'll probably put the journal online, too, but I'm not telling anyone my weblog address so it is a secret from my partner.

inkysquid 07/15/2007 #

I second what PostMuse said...seeing the different ways people eat will be an interesting part of this swap.

I love the idea of turning this into a photo journal!

FarStarr 07/19/2007 #

I just embarrassed the heck out of my husband on vacation photographing our food! So much fun!...so much food..and that wasn't even our "eating vacation". We are going on a cruise at the end of August. I don't think I should eat ANYTHING for the next month ;)

Hmmm...I kinda feel like sushi this afternoon...more pictures!

mediatinker 07/19/2007 #

My husband is really excited about this. He's got a lot of ideas about how to present the photos and even agreed to help me lay out all the groceries for our day on the table. We eat mostly at home, so it will be easy enough to do a Menzel-like spread, as well as photos of the finished meals.

This is going to be great fun.

inkysquid 07/20/2007 #

i'm so excited that you're all getting into this! :D can't wait to see your photos!!!

Chickpea 07/21/2007 #

The book this swap is based on sounds so interesting. I just ordered it off of Amazon. I can't wait to read it for myself. It sounds like the type of thing I'd find fascinating.

inkysquid 07/23/2007 #

chickpea: great! i also highly recommend his book "material world" :D

I love this swap, it looks so fun! Can't wait to start!

Postmuse and Maz, can't wait to show you some italian food :)

mediatinker 07/30/2007 #

I'm photographing today. I arranged all our ingredients in a Big Picture style photo this morning before breakfast. It was wonderful fun to see everything spread out! I put it up on Flickr tagged swapbot in case anyone wants to peek.

inkysquid 08/ 1/2007 #

what a great photo!

vi0letta 08/ 2/2007 #

PostMuse and Maz: your What I ate today swap from Italy is on the way :)

FarStarr 08/ 2/2007 #

Ooops I did it again...I took fabulous pictures while I was getting my breakfast and lunch to take to work. Then for dinner I made grilled summer squash, grilled potatoes and steak tips. Everything was beautiful! Guess when I remembered the camera????...yup..the second we both had empty plates! I'm still trying to get a whole day at home without having to lie about what I ate in one day...hmmm :)

charolette33 08/ 6/2007 #

CherylCraftCabin & FarStarr yours were sent out today!

inkysquid 08/ 7/2007 #

FarStarr: I'm having the same problem! I finally got a full day's photos taken today...but it's not too flattering because i ate every meal out! Oh well, that's pretty typical of NYC :)

jaune 08/ 8/2007 #

Sent mine today to Christina and Starwatcher.

Thought you guys might find this interesting:

Yoshiro Nakamatsu (born June 26, 1928), a.k.a. Dr. NakaMats, is the Japanese inventor claiming to hold the world record for number of inventions with over 3,000, including the floppy disk and "PyonPyon" spring shoes. He has being photographing and retrospectively analyzing every meal he has consumed during a period of 34 years (and counting). The goal of Nakamatsu is to live over 140 years old.

FarStarr 08/11/2007 #

...hmmm..and I had a hard time getting one whole day photographed!

inkysquid 08/11/2007 #

I posted a mosaic of my pics in my flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/inkysquid/1086199687/

They'll be on their way on Monday :D

charolette33 & Keanmaco - your packages are on their way!

FarStarr 08/17/2007 #

Food pictures on on the way to grinch and Thesaminal. I hope you like the peek into my life!

PostMuse 08/19/2007 #

Weee.... I was able to get mine done even though I left my digital camera in MA last weekend. It has been so long since I've had to relay on regular photos, and wait for developing. Quite the anxious weekend.

I got my two, from Italy and Japan, this week. This has to be one of my all time favorite swaps.

spoonergregory 08/20/2007 #

I put a mosaic of my pictures on my Flickr page too!

Chickpea 08/20/2007 #

This was one of my all-time favorite swaps too! Inky Squid, if you ever feel like hosting another one of these, I'd definitely sign up. Also if anyone would like to do a personal one on one of these Hungry Planet photos/explanations, send me a PM.

PostMuse 08/20/2007 #

I had planned an online photo journal documenting my day, but ended up having to use "real" photos, so no digital images :-(

I would for sure sign up for a second round of this... maybe in the Northern Hemisphere winter when I am not able to get local produce. It will be interesting to document my food when I'm relying only on what I can buy in the regular grocery store. The meals won't be nearly as colorful or interesting, I fear.

inkysquid 08/20/2007 #

I am so glad you all enjoyed this swap!!! We had a really great international group of swappers.

I've created another swap based on Material World, my other favorite Peter Menzel book. I hope you will participate in this, too :)
