Description:

Get rid of bad luck by passing around good fortune!

Make FIVE (5) FABRIC FORTUNE COOKIES. You will have five partners and send one cookie to each.

Two options for instructions (feel free to improvise): http://www.ladyharvatine.com/2008/05/fabric-fortune-cookie-tutorial.html

http://www.ehow.com/how5359593sew-unique-fortune-cookie-yourself.html

Completely stitch the cookies, but leave them flat (not popped open into a cookie) for mailing. They should fly for standard first class 44-cent postage.

This swap is inspired by the traditional Chinese Shangsi Festival, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shangsi_Festival, which falls on April 16th in 2010. I don't know much about this festival, but have been having so much fun making fabric fortune cookies that I wanted to create an excuse to make some more. When I read that one of the traditions for this occasion is to "get rid of bad luck" I thought it was a good enuff excuse for a swap.

Five should be enough cookies for you to string together a garland to loop over a window or door frame for good luck and add a little bit of cheer as we fight off the winter blahs.

Can we put a fortune inside of them?

I have never made one of these, but sure looks like fun. I have this swap on my watch list for now but will sign up when closer to time. In the mean time I am going to practice making them. Thanks for offering this fun swap!

Yes, a fortune would be a great idea. I totally forgot about that part. :) The fortune slips won't stay inside of a "flat" cookie, so you may have to include them in the envelope and let people put the fortune inside the cookie once they flip it open.

BassetMama10: these are super easy to make if you have a sewing machine. They'd still be easy, but a bit more time consuming, if you have to do it by hand. I'm going to put one in each XMAS card this year. I've already made 80 of them, so they go fast once you have made a couple and understand how they are put together.

After you make one or two for practice, you can cut out multiple circles at a time to save time. I had an OLFA circle cutter (which I had never used) and was able to whiz thru the cutting.

This sounds like a lot of fun! For those of you getting a head start, please don't send me any with wool felt or other animal fibers, as I am vegan. Thank you very much! I made up a few practice cookies, but I'm waiting to see my partners' favorite colors before I make the "real" ones. :)

This web site didn't connect for me. :-( Anyone know of any others with instructions on how to make these cookies?

I posted a link to a second set of instructions. I also removed the punctuation period at the end of the link in case you accidentally included that (which would break the link).

OK...got it. Thanks!
