Description:

You will make and mail two cootie catchers / fortune tellers to two most excellent partners. I suggest making one for yourself, too, because they are so much fun.

Here are some links to help you visualize what the project is:

-- a cootie catcher

-- what a detailed one could look like unfolded

-- the front squares of a folded cootie catcher

-- sample folding instructions

-- a simple template you could modify to suit your needs

SWAP instructions:

1--design the cootie catchers, one for each partner. Use her name and profile as inspiration for fortunes to tell, illustrations, decorative elements. I have had the best luck using 100% cotton paper for these. Unlike in grade school, notebook paper will not do.

2--decorate the elements of the project lovingly by drawing or otherwise illustrating them, gluing on paper, glittery bits, collage, exceptional use of stickers etc.

3--fold them so that when your partner opens the envelope she sees an origami square divided into four smaller, decorated squares.

4--enclose the cootie catcher / fortune teller in a folded sheet of larger paper or an envelope of its own so it travels well inside your mailing envelope.

5--enclose a personalized note to your partner, of at least one page describing your making process and wishing your partner well .

All welcome with 4.8 or higher ratings and 10+ completed mail swaps. I will review profiles before assigning partners. In the sad and unlikely event that angelling is needed, I will angel these but cannot guarantee that angelled fortune tellers will be personalized.

Cootie catchers, or fortune tellers as they are sometimes called, are way too delightful to stay in middle school where I first made them! Any questions, please ask. Thanks & happy swapping!

i am sooo glad you posted this swap! I have been thinking about these recently but for the life of me I couldn't remember how I made them! Now I have the instructions but I'm not sure what cotton paper is. I've never heard of it before. Would self coloured scrapbooking paper or computer paper work? I also remember we played a little game by moving our fingers about in them and chanting something at the same time and when you finished you had one bit open and would then tell the person their "fortune".

P.S. We made them in primary school. 9ages 4-12 but in the middle or upper school. Infants weren't dexterous for it. :>)

My dopey head couldn't figure out where to put my figures. The above video helped. Can't wait to make these. Watching for now, though...

This week I saw some really great embroidered cootie catchers and I wanted to try it out. I am watching for now though so I can look into it some more.

how fun -watching-will sign up when closer :)

Candyn29 02/25/2010 #

what fun, these used to be taken from us in grade school, let's see the teacher try and take mine now, lol!

Gofeen, cotton paper is sold in reams like regular printer paper. People use it for their resumes. If you Google it you will find some by Strathmore, for example.

Gofeen 02/26/2010 #

I will google it but i'm in U.K. and haven't heard of Strathmore except for it's mineral water! Strathmore is Scotlan. (where I am too) i will hunt and try to find some.

I've in the UK too and i can't find it anywhere. Would another good quality paper do? I'd like to try this but am a bit daunted at making 4!. I'm off to hunt for ideas.

NorthernBorder 02/27/2010 #

Oh, of course another good quality paper would do. I just mentioned what had worked for me. I know you urban and European folks have so many resources and know of specialty papers I've never heard of.

Seasidegirl 02/28/2010 #

I had a look in our art shop and found some nice 100% cotton water colour paper in there which they sold by the sheet. I'm experimenting. I guess it needs to be reasonably strong but flexible.

NorthernBorder 02/28/2010 #

Edited to reflect two partners, not four.

Seasidegirl 03/ 1/2010 #

I hope you didn't just do that because of what I said? I would have gone for four! but I think it will be easier because I'd like to match these to profiles and can't get going until they are allocated :-)

NorthernBorder 03/ 1/2010 #

Seasidegirl, I just realized it might be overwhelming to have to make four personalized items, and it would be more manageable and less of a chore to make two.

I am not sure if I will be able to do this, there is a lot going on right now. I will be watching for the next round. But I did find this kids website that might help out:
