Description:

I have noticed a few swappers who have the same love I do for ratties. It makes me so happy because they really are the best & most lovable caged small pet a person can have (even more so than hamsters or guinea pigs). I was inspired for this swap because of a profile with the cutest pet rat picture on it. (Thank you @Candyn29 :)

For this swap you will write & decorate a letter for your partner about your pet rat[s] (or, as in my case, your pet rats[s] that have crossed the rainbow bridge). If you're anything like me you have more than 1 pet rat at once or have had several pet rats over the years. You can chose to write about all of them, or one special one in particular, the choice is up to you.

THE LETTER MUST INCLUDED FOR A 5 RATING:

  • 1 page about your rat[s] (think: regular notebook size, both front & back written on or 2 printed pages if you chose to type). You can write more than this if you chose.

  • What made you decide on getting a rat for a pet? When was this?

  • What is your rats name, age, breed, etc.?

  • A story about your rat[s].

  • A picture (or pictures) of your rat[s].

OTHER SUGGESTIONS WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT:

  • Tips on caring for your rats; is there anything special you have learned as a rat owner that fellow rat mommies & daddies might like to try?

  • Some of your rats favorites such as: foods/treats, tricks, toys, sleeping spot, etc.

  • How has having a pet rat in your family changed your views on the world in general? What I mean by this is: do you feel you judge less quickly or look at the products to buy to see if they're tested on animals? What would you say to people who frown on the idea of having a rat for a pet or just see rats as "dirty rodents"? Or your thoughts on experimenting on rats?

  • Are there any rattie websites you frequent?

  • Do you know of any rat adoption places in your city (if your partner happens to be someone near by to make this suggestion to).

  • Do you make your own rattie sleep snuggies or hanging cage goodies? Feel free to send one to your partners & to make someones day. Or maybe just share the pattern or a how to so postage isn't as expensive.

  • Can you draw? Share a rat drawing or another artistic outlet that expresses your love for rats.

  • Is there a favorite rat item you own (besides your pets)? Maybe a doll, jewelry, article of clothing? Any place you suggest for rat themed items (can be things for your rat or a place that sells cute rat decorative things or clothes for owners)?

If you have any suggestions or just want to add your own ideas to your letters please do, these are simply a guide line to get your letter started. Just be sure you include the items listed in the first section. Be as creative with this as you want. This is the definition of mail art for inspiration. The whole idea is to have fun & share the love of rats with other rattie lovers!

I am letting this swap be open to newbies & even people with 3 ratings as long as there is a valid explanation. However, no recent 1s (in the last 6 months). Because it's an light envelope swap I am making this international. NOTICE THERE ARE TWO PARTNERS! FOR THIS SWAP! Please write on here or PM me with any questions. :)

Hi Kate! As you know, I'm watching this swap and will sign up if I can get my other swaps finished (you know my story). But wanted to comment here about my recent adventure at the pet store...

Went in to buy some rat-rat food and was over at the cages looking at the rat cuties. Some people walk up and say "ew, rats" and proceed to get all googly eyed over the blood sucking hamsters. So, I just had to say something. I told them how sweet the ratties were and that they very rarely, if ever, bite - and if they do, it's probably because you had food on your hands. However those bratty little hamsters will gnaw your finger off if given the chance. Don't think I sold them on the idea of getting a rat, but I felt better anyway. It's so annoying to hear people hating on the rats when they have no idea what they are like.

Thanks for sharing the story! I do that whenever I go to the pet store too. :) People usually look at me like I'm nuts. Breaks my heart.

I actually got to hold some cute little rattie girls the other day. I was leaving my street (I live in a culdesac) and my neighbor at the end of the block was in her side yard. From pretty far away I still knew she was holding a rat. So I stopped and asked her. I parked my car and got out, she came over and let me hold the one rat but then she pulled another one off her shoulder (who was hidden by her hair) and handed me another little lady rat. I was so giddy to be holding rats again (all mine have passed away and my stepmom hates animals, UGH!). We talked for a bit (she's never had pet rats before) and I gave her some tips and she said I could come by and visit them. I was so so so happy! :)

awww, what an adorable swap. too bad it's not for mice too ;)

Candyn29 04/ 7/2010 #

I have had a house full of hamsters, dwarf hamsters, big hamsters. We have had several hampster homocides, so Im done with hamsters. But mice just kinda creep me out.

katehawk 04/ 7/2010 #

Oh man, I didn't even think of mice, they get a lot of slack too. Candy, I'm surprised you can have so many hamsters! I have had so much bad luck with them as pets. How does the rat like them and how do they feel about the rat?
