Description:

Okay I missed the first one of these and Really wanted to participate, so I hope there are people out there who want to do it again. The idea is that you select misc yarn out of your stash cut various lengths and wind it all into a ball either tieing them as your run out of one yarn or just continueing to add it. As you wrap it into a ball you add little goodies of various sorts - either things that are just fun, things that would be fun for a knitter or crocheter or thing that match the yarn. Whatever... I am not sure if there is a length that people usually do, so I am going to say approx. 100 yds. Please send me a note if there is something I need to add regarding details for this swap. Please check out this web-site for ideas on what to do with a magic yarn ball: http://knittersreview.com/articlehowto.asp? article=/review/profile/010726_a.asp

If you multiple no sends or have feedback of a 4.0 or less you will be banned. Sorry!

Years ago I made these as party favors for my daughter's birthday party but instead of yarn I used rolls of paper streamers. The kids had a great time and all the mess was at their house when it was unwrapped.

This sounds like so much fun!

I found pictures of Magic Yarn Balls from another swap here:

Thanks lotusbeans for the great links. I put one picture up that I liked, but there were TONS of great ideas on the flickr.com site. Everyone should check them both out for Great ideas. The party favors idea is really fun also. =) I may have to try that out sometime. I especially like the idea of the mess being at the other kids house. =)

Oops! I didn't realize my sister was logged in and not me when I was commenting on the above ideas. Sorry if there is any confusion. Elizabeth Wedin is imyorhuckleberry's sister (who also lives with me) -Angie

Oh wonderful I saw a mention of this idea when reading through someones Swap-bot feedback and thought I would LOVE to do that thanks so much for setting up this swap!:0)

todsahonchik 08/15/2006 #

Do you think it would be too haughty to say no cheap acrylic yarns? I know I would love to receive nice fiber from this... and maybe others feel the same. What do you think??

mazzam 08/15/2006 #

Yipee!! I was in the last magic ball swap and LOVED it. I have made two more for Secret Pals since the swap and am really looking forward to a repeat. I agree with Tod Sahonchik though that acrylic is not nice to knit.

mazzam 08/15/2006 #

P.S. Is a single yarn okay though as that would be easier to use for a small project, or do you want it to be all in various lengths of different yarn.

user1417 08/15/2006 #

The first magic yarn all swap was fantastic. Mine came all the way from Portugual. How awesome is that . I am looking forward to another one!

imyorehuckleberry 08/16/2006 #

Hello Everyone! As this is the first magic yarn ball swap I have ever been in I just assumed that they always had different yarns cut into different length wrapped together. I think for this swap you can do either just one yarn or various lengths. Maybe in the future I will do a magic yarn ball swap with just one type of yarn. I agree, please include nice fibers in your yarn ball.

Triners 08/16/2006 #

I was going to cut down on my swapping but I can't skip this one! Yeah for natural fibers :)

StephanieRenee 08/16/2006 #

I really want to join this one, but I'm going to be in the middle of moving, and driving the whole time so I might not be able to check my emails. If you could extend the date by just a few days for send outs, it would be awesome, because I really want to do this one!

user2068 08/17/2006 #

is this swap themed or is there things for the knitter only?

i know you sais whatever but...

imyorehuckleberry 08/17/2006 #

Sure, Stephanie I can extend the mail-by dates by a couple of days. By the way welcome ahead of time to the Northwest! (I live in Mount Vernon, Wa an hour north of Seattle).

Artsydoll- It isn't really themed, you just use a nice yarn, or a ton of pieces of nice yarn and wrap up any little things. Knitting related things are always great, but really any crafty thing or cute stuff, good stuff to eat (as long as it is wrapped), or anything else little that you can thinkg of to include. Have fun! -Angie

user1816 08/25/2006 #

I was thinking it'd be one skein of yarn, then I'd wrap stuff in it as I go...wouldn't it be more difficult if it were a bunch of yarns of different lengths? Plus, it'd be more difficult (for me anyhow!) to knit with if it were more than one yarn - you'd never know when it was going to suddenly end!

imyorehuckleberry 08/26/2006 #

Sorry, but part of the point of a magic yarn ball swap is to use up your extra odds and ends of yarn. Please check out this site for ideas on what to do with it: http://knittersreview.com/articlehowto.asp? article=/review/profile/010726_a.asp

If a person wants to only use one type of yarn that is fine, but generally you use lots of different kinds hooked together and you just keep knitting when it changes to a different yarn.

user1816 08/26/2006 #

Ah, I understand now - you're combining the two types of "magic yarn balls" - one that is magical because of what's in it (surprises), and the one that uses up all your old yarns pieces (magic being the different yarns). All the other swaps I've seen have been one skein types with goodies, not the multiple yarn types.

user1534 08/28/2006 #

Oooh, this will be fun! I was in the first swap and really enjoyed it.

It was a nice surprise to look at this swap and see the photo - 'tis my photo and the yarn ball I sent my partner! :)

user2110 08/30/2006 #

This so FAB! I've got mine done, balled up and ready to be shipped!! woo hooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

user3233 08/30/2006 #

Has anyone made a button (for blogs etc) for this swap. I just signed up as I think it is such a cute idea (and much easier for me to do than the next round of Secret Pal), but I'd love a button to advertise it on my blog...

user3334 09/ 2/2006 #

I love the idea of natural fibers for this swap. I also think it might be a nice ides to limit the number of different types of yarn to two or maybe three, just so we will get a good sized length of yarn.

I am thrilled to find this as I missed out on the first of these swaps

debaccuardi 09/ 4/2006 #

I was also disappointed not to participate in the first swap. Thanks for hosting a second! I think this is one of the more creative ideas out there.

mercuriousmith 09/ 5/2006 #

ok! mine's ready to go w/a disclaimer that I am not yet a knitter and I don't have much yarn just hanging around. So I used what I had because it's nice though it's not natural.

I do love how it turned out. That has to count for something. :)

user2637 09/ 8/2006 #

Is there going to be a questionnarie?

user2727 09/ 8/2006 #

Ihave made some lovely 'stash scarves' by knitting (or crochetting lengthways. Use a different yarn for each row and leave the ends dangling as the fringe.

PJCrossen 09/ 9/2006 #

I found an idea at one yarn shop and thought it would be fun to make my yarn ball everything needed to make it. Would something like that be okay? Or should it not be defined as a specific project. It would also mean all one color yarn, too, but a whole skein. I thought it could be the magic ball that teaches a technique. I have severeal ideas so if this doesn't sound like a good idea, then let me know. I think this swap will be lots of fun and I am really looking forward to it!

Paula 09/ 9/2006 #

I've not done a magic yarn ball before, so the more stuff I read here the more confused I've become. My partner's getting 100+ yards of a single color with a bunch of surprises inside and a hopefully enjoyable center.

If this isn't what she expected, I apologize.

user2637 09/11/2006 #

Peety, Sounds like you've got it figured out. =)

cutevira 09/15/2006 #

ok, i'm confused! My ball is oddments of yarn. I tried to give blocks of the same color though :)

abbehope 09/18/2006 #

I just had a look at the list of participants, hope there's not really that many "not sendt" as it seems like at the moment... I'm patiently waiting for my magic yarnball, but I know it may take some time to get her if it has to travel overseas to me...

PJCrossen 09/19/2006 #

I received my package from Charlotte F and it was spectacular!!! So many wonderful goodies packed in that ball of ribbon tape yarn it's as if she knew me because it is everything I like. You spoiled me very nicely :-) Thank you sooo much!

debaccuardi 09/22/2006 #

I just finished unwrapping my yarn ball from Kim! I love it all. Two balls of Knit Picks sock yarn and all kinds of knitting related goodies. I needed them all too!! Thank you Kim:)
