Description:

You will have 3 partners for this swap. You'll make 3 dolls, receive 3 dolls. ATC artists might get into this, it's kinda like an ATC, but half-page size...

On a half sheet (8 1/2 x 5 1/2) of cardstock, you'll create a doll - male, female, fantasy creature - using paper, beads, feathers, stickers, stamped images, ink, jewelry findings, found items - anything! Glue or otherwise securely attach your items. Your doll can be completely flat or slightly 3-D, but make it easy to mail (and I'd recommend bubble-lined envies for these so they don't get folded en route).

Be creative! Cut a picture of a clock from a magazine and use it for a head! Make "jointed" limbs by attaching arms and legs with brads. How about ribbons or beaded fibers for hair? a miniature wooden spoon for an arm? a golf club for a leg? sequins would make a glitzy gown or a mermaid's tail. Embellish the base page and the doll any way you like. Stamp or emboss or watercolor a background if the mood strikes you, or mount pre-printed paper to the cardstock base. Give your gal (or guy) a hat or a feather boa or a briefcase made of seashells or some really great shoes (gotta love shoes...)

This is an international swap. Ratings 4.5 or higher. Newbies welcome with a complete profile and valid e-mail address. I know first-hand what it feels like to be flaked on, so please don't join if you can't play nice. Communicate any problems to me and to your partners, and give hearts for extra effort or exceptional craftsmanship.

My first hosting, so please msg me with any questions. Cheers!

does the base have to be carstock? can we use polymer clay instead?

Justine 09/ 8/2007 #

oooo - you mean rolled out to a flat sheet? that might be fabulous if it wasn't brittle. I haven't worked with polymer clay much except for beads and figures, but as long as it's the right size and will hold up through the post, I don't see why not. Canvas board would work as well and be sturdier than cardstock.

I like the canvas board idea for the base, it would be perfect and strong too!

so it can be clay, but it has to be reasonably flat? i can do that... but i was thinking a more rounded doll. as you set the guidlines... this sounds fun! also, is it a doll on a 8 1/2 x 5, or you cut the 8 1/2 x 5 to make the doll? (like cutting out legs to make it jointed and such. still trying to figure exact specifics... i'm in either way. i just want to be sure i meet requirements.

dreamerkins, maybe you'd be best off doing parts of the doll body in clay and mounting to a canvas board. The base has to be flat, but the doll itself can be reasonably 3D-ish. To clarify, the base itself should be 8 1/2 x 5 1/2, and the doll should be mounted to that base.

ok, thats what i was thinking too, but wasnt sure if i could!

I bought canvas boards today, but they are 5"x7", are they ok? The next size up is 6.3"x9.4"

Justine 09/11/2007 #

5 x 7 is close enough (and easy to frame!) 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 is easier if someone is doing the cardstock base, since it's just one cut of a standard 8 1/2 x 11" page size. I would stick with either of those two sizes, though - 4 x 6, for example, would be too small.

OH...I havn't made these before, so the actual base is a rectangle and we then attach the art to that? I thought it was a doll that was 8x5 or so, well I'm glad that I read this. I'm really looking forward to making these. I remember playing with Flatsy dolls when I was a kid! (too long ago) lol

This sounds an interesting challenge, almost a giant ATC!!

Loreen and Barbara in US and Robyn in Australia, your dolls are in the post from UK. We are having trouble with our post at the moment so please let me know when you receive your package.

Kind regards, Margot
