Have you heard of the Sue Grafton Mystery Book series, where she starts each of her books with a letter of the alphabet? She's up to the letter T now, but it's taken her nearly 15 or so years to get to T.

I thought it might be fun to do a postcard swap based on each letter of the alphabet.

One swap every 2 weeks will cover the whole alphabet in 1 year. Long range, but the whole set should be pretty impressive when completed.

I am starting with just the first few letters of the alphabet to see how this goes. If all goes well, then I will continue with the rest of the alphabet.

Of course, you don't have to shoot for the entire alphabet, maybe you have a favorite letter or two you like? :)

Send ONE postcard to FIVE partners with the theme/subject/picture on the postcard beginning with the letter of this swap. Write the subject on the back of the postcard and a few words about why you picked this particular postcard.

Postcards can be store bought or handmade. Let your creative side go wild.

This swap is for swappers with a rating of 4.7 or higher, at least 3 rated swaps (mailed swaps), no more than one no send in the last 3 months and no swaps outstanding more than 7 days at the close of the signup period.

Questions, comments, please let me know. To get a quicker response, please use the contact link next to my user name above.

EDITED TO ADD NOTE: This is turning out to be quite popular. Don't stress out over missing any of the letters. Life does happen and since this is such a long range swap, anyone is bound to be on vacation or have something else happen along the way that messes up their swap calendar. I thought about this, and as the need arises during the course of this series, I will set up a few "Make-Up" swaps for those that missed a letter or two so you can all complete your sets. If you miss a letter, just pm me and I'll add you to my list and when we get a few people, I'll set it up and let you know about it. I'm willing to work with you all to complete your sets, communication is the key!

Oh this sounds like great fun and a bit of a challenge! I am definately in! I hope we make it through the entire alphabet!

Swan 09/13/2007 #

Can the theme/subject be a place? E.g. a city or a country?

YarnTails 09/13/2007 #

Thanks for joining!

TeraBACat -- I hope we make it from A to Z too!

swan -- I don't see why it couldn't be a city, country or place. Just be sure and remember to write the "A" name on the back.

Swan 09/13/2007 #

I'm planning to reserve a special box for these cards and hope we make it through the alphabet, too :)

Cnvingltlbtch 09/15/2007 #

It says we can do homemade postcards, so I assume we could print our own of photographs we took. Is this correct?

YarnTails 09/19/2007 #

Yes, you can make a postcard out of a photograph.

girlzoot 09/19/2007 #

This is dreadful, I am be sucked into a long-running swap. I knew my will was weak and I would return to the swaps and start to ignore my homework eventually.

Cute swap idea.

YarnTails 09/19/2007 #

Thanks for joining....don't think of it as a swap, think of it as an adventure!

webdreamy 09/21/2007 #

I love the alphabet! And postcards. I had an illuminated coloring postcard alphabet from a publishing company... so beautiful (I colored them all myself) I can't wait to do this. I'm glad we can do our own

qmock 09/27/2007 #

Thanks for creating this swap! I too, love letters, and creating/finding all the postcards will keep me challenged. I'm looking forward to this. I too, am planning to do the whole alphabet!

qmock 09/27/2007 #

I do have a question, will you just keep posting the subsequent letters? I see you have one for M posted and I wonder if I'm missing something. Are all of the letters already posted? Thanks

dandelion 09/27/2007 #

YeAh! Today's the day!! Can't wait for this swap to begin ~ my cards are just waiting for the addresses!! :D

caresalot 09/27/2007 #

I have the same question as Qmock...about subsequent letters? My P.C,s are ready to go:)

YarnTails 09/27/2007 #

Hi qmock and cares_alot -- I've got the swaps for the all the letters up through "M" posted. If you click on my user name in the swap, and the look at the right side of the screen, underneath the swaps I'm in, it will show the swaps I'm hosting and they are all listed there.

Or click on the "view all swaps" and then pull down the "postcard" subheading. All the alphabet swaps should show up. I have been putting a big blue letter in the description, so they should be pretty visible.

Let me know if you have more questions or need some help finding something.

whinendine 09/28/2007 #

I've got mine too....

Cnvingltlbtch 09/28/2007 #

I just dropped mine in the outgoing mail for scowlette, sweetsugar, ddmaree, carrol and qmock. I hope you all enjoy them.

redleppard 09/29/2007 #

Yarntails, are you going to do a number postcard series next?? hint, hint...

CARROLL 09/30/2007 #

Wow, I spent Saturday ripping up and gluing down the dictionary. Now I'm ready to mail all five out, on Monday to Oregon, Florida, Ohio, Calif. North Carolina.

PostMuse 09/30/2007 #

Got three done and heading out tomorrow. One to Texas and two to California. Hoping to get the other two completed tomorrow night. It will be amazing if these make it through the USPS without a hitch. I am putting 83¢ postage (I believe that is first class plus the dreaded "non-machinable" fee) on two of them... just to make sure.

PostMuse 10/ 1/2007 #

I really, really have all sorts of anxiety with postage. I brought my cards to the dragonlady at the post office today, and she said I had to put packing tape over some of the embellishments. I suppose I could have walk off and mailed the cards elsewhere, but she intimidates me and I just said "yes, mam" and pulled out my packing tape (I always have packing tape in my messenger bag) and neatly applied it to the embellishments. Then she insisted the cards didn't need the "non-machinable" rate, and when I started to protest, she told me to just put the 26¢ stamp on the cards and be done with it. I did as I was told, and now I'm going to worry until the cards are received. Postage bullies. There should really be a law.

FarStarr 10/ 1/2007 #

Who would enforce the law??? The fat envelope police?? But seriously, I go to the post office armed with the printout from the website. This is after I was charged the package rate ($1.30) for my liquid nails postcards that weren't even oversized. I have one good contact at each of the post offices I go to so I always try to ensure i'm in their line...We don't NEED this kind of stress!! ;)

My postcards are flat and are on their way to Postmuse, Yarn tails, Carmen, Thriftynickels, and Christina.

YarnTails 10/ 2/2007 #

Sorry you're having to deal with the postage bullies. I just put my 26 cent stamp on the US ones, bought some 90 cent stamps for overseas, and have to sort through my lose stamps for the 69 centers to Canada...anyhow, just put the postage on and drop them in the mailbox in front of my office building. So far, so good, nothing has gotten lost, although a couple got destroyed along the way.

Yea, it does all depend on who's working the window at any given time you get to the front of the line, and what kind of day/night they had as to whether you get the good rate or the quick I don't care rate.

Oh Victoria -- do you read my mind or something? I was thinking about that today. Numbers. And how and when to work them in. That would be a good project for January...month #1 of the new year....haha

Throw your ideas my way, I entertain all ideas that come through!

dandelion 10/ 6/2007 #

This is such a great swap. So far I've received A for Amy Tan, Arizona, Australian Aboriginal Art, and Armadillo! I sent out A for Aloha postcards. A number series sounds great, too! ~dandelion (formerly ddmaree)

YarnTails 10/ 9/2007 #

I set up a flickr group pool for the alphabet postcards if you'd like to put pictures of your card in there. :)

PostMuse 10/10/2007 #

I forgot to scan mine :-( If my partners want to scan them, that would be great. I will remember for the next set.

dandelion 10/12/2007 #

Oh darn, I forgot to snap a pic of mine, too!

whinendine 10/17/2007 #

How long do you wait after a swap closes?

angela foltz (webdreamy)- I just wanted to let you know that I have not gotten your card yet. Could you let me know if you sent it? Thanks

I will try to scan mine in this weekend if not before.
