Description:

This swap has been updated to international. So, everyone! Join in! All are welcome.

I often tear out pages from magazines that have a neat design, catchy ad or phrases, would make a great background for a paper card, have a stunning pattern or color palate, or would make a neat homemade envelope. My intention is to reuse the page for a piece of mail art, or the like.

For this swap, you will make 3 handmade postcards that are crafted from a page from a magazine. Each postcard does not have to be made from the same sheet/page, and each postcard does not have to be made from pages contained in the same magazine. You may embellish your postcard if you like, as long as it is still machinable and does not coverup the image or design from the magazine page. Please be sure to make your postcard sturdy with cardstock, a grocery box, paperboard, or something similar.

You will send 1 handmade postcard to each of 3 swap partners. Your postcard will be stamped and sent "naked" (which means NOT in an envelope. Please include a small note to make the postcard exchange a little more personable. Include the name of the publication from which you tore out the page, your swap use name, and this swap's title.

This particular swap is a friendly postcard theme, not for adult-themed topics, photographs, ads, or art. (*If anyone is interested in me creating another one for adult related topics, let me know.)

New swappers are welcomed with a well-filled out profile. Other swappers with recent bad ratings will be banned from the swap. I will review absolutely all profiles before assigning partners. I have the right to exclude anyone that I feel will be unable to fulfill this swap's requirements.

Feel free to message me with any questions. And, thanks for joining!

This would be a great international swap and as I live in France, I buy magazines in french and there are some great images to make postcards out of with french words. It doesn't cost a lot to post overseas and would be great to receive other postcards over seas. Im watching at the moment until its international will sign up.

RetroJane 10/14/2010 #

@violin21 - I'll go ahead and change it to international then. I love all things French, :) so maybe I will magically be one of your partners. Haha!

Great just signed up and just made them, I have made it french related all three so I am ready to post them even with the stamps I bought. Had fun cutting up my mag its a great swap, thankyou :)

I too would love international swappers!

Missysmom 10/21/2010 #

I noticed this swap earlier and was disappointed that I couldn't participate. I would love to join but just saw this updated to international and I don't think a week is quite enough time for me to get these done. If you decide to add a few days- send me a msg. Thanks

Missysmom 10/22/2010 #

I made 2 last night so I am signing up now.

RetroJane 10/22/2010 #

Oh, @Missysmom - thanks for signing up! I can still adjust the date. I want to be accommodating for you all. :)

I luuuuuuv tearing out magazine pages! This is a great idea for a swap - thanks so much!

I'm sorry if this sounds dumb - but it's very early and I've not had coffee yet... can this be done as a collage with images from several magazines?

katy1234 10/24/2010 #

I have only just signed up to swap-bot and am wondering - where do I look to find out the partners that I will send the postcards to? Will it be under "messages"? Thanks in advance!

RetroJane 10/25/2010 #

@pmj1959 - No, I do not feel that a collage meets this requirements for this swap. My intention was to have an image or design from a single page taken out of a magazine. If a little embellishment was used -- such as markers, glitter glue, something thin/flat that does not cover up the main image or design, that is acceptable. But, it should be just a single magazine page.

Perhaps we can do a collage in the future? I have thought about also doing something like a ransom note or rebus puzzle type of handmade postcard swap.

RetroJane 10/25/2010 #

@katy1234 - Once partners are assigned, you will receive an email. Plus, you will see the list of partners you are to send to in the top right of this swap's page in the yellow box. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me.

You read my mind!!! I was JUST about to post a swap like this! Now I don't have too!! ;)

naynay 10/26/2010 #

Glad I re-read this and the comments. I was thinking collage the whole time. This just simplifies the card for me.

Missysmom 10/26/2010 #

ooooh-k, me too. I might have to go a bit simpler than what I was thinking too. Good thing I have so much to choose from. May have to make some more to fulfill these swap requirements. I know from past swaps it is so easy to mis-interpret the host's wishes. I have had that same problem- getting cards that I really wasn't expecting. That's the problem with computer communication. Glad I read this before I sent my cards.

Missysmom 10/26/2010 #

P.S. If you host a collage PC swap- msg. me to joi. Cut and paste is my passion.

Missysmom 10/26/2010 #

I meant "join" but joi (joy/joie- French) is pretty close in my book.

RetroJane 10/26/2010 #

@Missysmom - sorry if it sounded misleading. I was intending 1 layer of paper. I could go for creating a collage postcard swap, something that is still machinable and able to be mailed naked. Sounds like there would be enough interest if I hosted such??

katy1234 10/29/2010 #

Oh dear. I have just posted my postcards and I didn't see the messages above about it not being a collage. Mine are collages! I've misinterpreted the requirements. As this is my first swap ever, please forgive me!!! Hope I don't get bad ratings!

katy1234 10/29/2010 #

Also, what is meant by the term machinable?

RetroJane 10/29/2010 #

I stated "a page" from a magazine. I never referenced collages. I never mentioned using multiple pages for your postcard, but stated "a page." Perhaps I could have added the words "a SINGLE page" and "do not cut up images." But, I thought I was pretty clear.

RetroJane 10/29/2010 #

@katy1234 - 'Machinable' means that it can still be processed through the US Post Office's system without being handled by hand. This means mail that is a regular shape, not lumpy, not a tube, of a certain thickness. Non-machinable mail results in additional postage costs and often damage if one attempts to mail it as machinable. Therefor, for this swap, your items should not have had embellishments like gems, brads, buttons, 3-d flowers, etc that would have set the postcard into the NON-machinable class of mail.

RetroJane 10/29/2010 #

I love hosting swaps, but never thought this one would have led to such confusion. :\

Missysmom 10/30/2010 #

Well, don't let our poor reading habits throw you off. I re-read the requirements and I guess I saw the part about all the pages not needing to be from the same magazinè*- you meant, for each card and I saw multiple images. Just a mind trick- or not careful enough reading. Sorry. I cant believe how many times I have received postcards or ATCs that don`t quite fit the requirements.

katy1234 11/ 2/2010 #

Thanks for your explanation of machinable. I'm a first-timer with all of this! Like Missymom, I too read about the pages not needing to be from the same magazine and assumed (without thinking!) that you could use mulitiple images on the one postcard. I'll read more carefully in future!
