This first in a series I will be running if for beginner and experienced Art/Visual journal-ers!!

We will be swapping an art journal on the go, completing 3 pages then swapping, then with the journal we receive completing the next swap and so on. At some point you will receive a full art journal then get a new journal and away we can go again!!

Please take part in as many or as few as you wish. I hope that the guidelines will mean everyone get a similar amount of effort put into their journal but it still has a large range of creativity in it.

Step 1: either buy or make or use an art journal that u have that has been started by yourself( or someone else). Journal is it be approx 15cm x 21cm or A5 sized. each journal is to have at least 15 pages. Now pages must not be note paper thin, think cartridge, watercolour paper (at least 110gsm). The paper has to take mixed media applications :)

Step 2: Complete 3 pages : Page.1 is a small bio -who you are and what u do, contact details of some kind, (either email, postal address, web site, swapbot, ect only put what u feel comfortable leaving) If you only wish to leave your user name thats fine as well.

Page .2 Decorated in a way to showcase your art style, collage, paint, drawing, printmaking, or a mix :) text is allowed, and please date your page as well.

Some prompts you MIGHT like to use in your page: 1.My day today.

2.A childhood memory

3.The most fantastic thing I can imagine is…..

4.My favourite story, my way

5.My “motto”

6.My favourite animal and what it has taught me

7.My desk today

8.Layers

9.Complimentary colours

10.My guardian (person, animal or idea)

11.The future

12.Hobby

13.Show us your favourite art making, (u can throw something new in if u want as well) for example if this is your first art journal but you have always loved to knit: photocopy a knitting pattern and paste it in.. use yarn to tie-up the page, knit a page marker, photograph a collection of your knitted items and create a photomontage with them.

Really the sky is the limit, have fun and create 

so Pages 1 and 2 are a double page spread AND

Now Page .3 can be anywhere in the book, Start a page!! we all know how a blank page can look so sad, so do something to a blank page, splash some paint, prime it, add a journal prompt, rub-on, stamped image, a magazine cut out.. whatever.. something to start the journal-er on their art making.

*** Minimum requirement is that you have completed at least 6 type 3 swaps and been rated at least 4.85.****

next swap in series

Happy Swapping!!

hi, i was wondering more about the third page... if it is anywhere in the book... is the next person gonna use it? or is it gonna stay there uuntil that page is reached...

How would we get the journal back? Or would we?

some questions I was asked :)

Q. Can I make a paperbag journal for this swap, or do I have to buy a premade journal.

A. U can make or buy a journal, either is great! just make sure that it is at least 15 pages long and made from paper better than copy or note paper. I was wanting to avoid any dissapointment or jornals beaking down and not "working" when someone tried painting, watercolour, collage, glue, crayon, pastels, binder, glitter, prinking ect art journal implies nearly anything gos so if u feel a paper bag journal will hold up to any and all of these art media being "thrown at it" then by all means make a paperbag journal. In fact i have never used one so I will leave that to u...

Q. Also, if I have to buy a journal, how can i make the paper pages thicker? Do I glue a small stack together or do you have a better way.

A. glueing is usually done when an artist us using a pre-existing book that was not designed for an art project, where the pages are thin and need beefing up. I wanted to avoing this as if u are using a readymade book it sould be something like an artist skechbook, that has cartridge paper at least or even watercolor or mixed media paper... not card as such just thicker than copy paper :)though the more fancy the paper the more expencive it will be... u can ast ur local art store what they think i find more give out good advice if u tell them how it will be used. Spiral bound is fine.

Q.what do you mean by a "full page spread"? Do you mean both the left and right side of the journal to count as 1 page?

A.I ment that 1 page be 1 side: ie for page 1 and 2 where u talk about urself and THEN do ur art then it would be on one open spread... both left and right sides being next to each other making a whole double page full spread... (hope that is clear ish)

then when u turn the page the next "spread" will be someone else

The idea was the 3rd page is then left for someone else to finish and can be anywhere. So the journal would be sequential the first person leaving the title page free and working on their double page… their third page be any where, say on page 10 of the book for example. Then in another swap the next person would use the next 2 pages for them selves and start their 3rd page maybe page 8 of the book and so on so eventually someone one would use each page some being prepare by others previously.

also I forgot too say date your work as well :)

catsandbutterflys 07/18/2011 #

@ Dakini Im hoping people will love the idea and sign up for this swap & i can run heaps more to so u MIGHT serendipitously get your own journal back but u might not but either way u will have ur very own art jornal by some amazing crasy creative types that u can cherish :)

Also another idea for people is if u wanted to set up private swaps to "get" u'r journal back.... But that would require u'r partner to want to swap back....

catladybj 07/27/2011 #

why put in a bunch of personal info if you are not getting your book back? and couldn't the last swap be sending it back to the original artist? that personal info could include address. decide that there would be 5 swaps(15 pages) and then return to 'owner'. if some books only have 15 pgs they could not go any farther either, right? just throwing some questions out there.

catsandbutterflys 07/27/2011 #

@catladybj i see your point :) Re personal info, I like to know more about the artists i swap with so getting an insight into them and their art is interesting for me. The main focus in on the ART journal side of things though not heaps of writing

I didn't make it a requirement of the swap to send it back once it was full as i cant "make" people sign up for a certain amount of swaps as swapbot can't set up round robin style swaps.

I know with decos they have the makers address ect so they can make it home but as this is a bit more postage i think its less likely a swapper will send it back, and its not a requirement that u add any more personal contact details than u want, a swap bot user name is the minimum requirement.... (maybe i will change the wording to make that clear)

it would be cool to get ur own one back though
