Okay Ladies and Gents: it's time to get our craft on...

For this swap you will have one partner and you will alter one cigar box for them. This is an US only swap to keep shipping cost as low as possible. this is also a senders choice so you can start working on your box as soon as you sign up. REQUIREMENTS: Box... this is a swap for an altered cigar box, NOT a plain wood box get at a craft store but a cigar box that you can get either for free or for a small fee at your local smoke shop or from your crazy cigar smoking Uncle Jimmy... It CAN be any size, so long as it was once a cigar box used for storing multiple cigars. Remember that this is senders choice however, it is always nice to add a little something that let's your partner know you've read their profile. Also, both the outside and the inside have to be altered using at least three different techniques. Examples of techniques could be collage, paint, stamp, embellish and so on... You DO NOT need to make a diorama or a mini shrine or anything like that (unless you want to), but there does need to be some altering done to the inside of the box. These boxes should take some time to make, at least 3 or 4 hours, if you need inspiration just google or flickr cigar boxes and you can find lots of examples and tutorials, and of course you can always message me if you want :) SWAPPERS: To join this swap you must have a rating of 4.9 with NO 1s and NO 3s within the last 3 months. Also, you must have at least 15 type 3 swaps under your belt. If for some reason you so not meet these requirements but you still would like to join please message me (don't just comment me but send me an actual message explaining your circumstances). RATING: This is a senders choice swap and although they are boxes they are also pieces of art and therefore subjective. If you receive a box in the mail and it was sent by the send date and it is altered with at least three different techniques and it was originally a cigar box, that is a five. However, this is an opportunity to get super crafty and creative so let's really go the extra mile and try for hearts. I have seen and received some truly inspired and inspiring art from these swaps and I KNOW that we can create some AMAZING boxes sooooooo LET'S GET CRAFTY!!!!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Swapping

WOW!! I thought I was the only one altering cigar boxes. I'm going to think about joining. It takes me a lot more than 3-4 hours on each though so I'm not sure I will have the time. Thanks for hosting this though. I'm going to google now!!!

i love altering . i got a few questions,

  1. do we fill with goodies?
  2. michaels and such sell cigar boxes that are plain (there called cigar boxes in store). are these not allowed? some people are allergic to any smell of cigarettes and the sort;.

The boxes do not have to be filled with any goodies, just altered. Of course if you would like to include something, I'm sure your partner would appreciate it. For this Swap the box has to be an actual cigar box, not just a wood craft box. I know some people may have issues with the smell, but they can either wait to join a similar swap (if it is a severe allergy vs a dislike) or perhaps ask their partner to include a dryer sheet or something of the like. I am requiring actual cigar boxes for a couple reasons; I like the reusing/ repurposing aspect as well as the different shapes, sizes and materials that actual cigar boxes come in... Thx for the questions and comments.

Hi Cindynvb It almost always takes me longer then the required time to alter my boxes too, but I decided on a rather short time because there is no size requirement and I wanted to make sure that even if some one chose a small box it would have a good amount of time put into it... Also, there are those super human artists that can visualize and create an amazing piece in the blink of an eye... (I am most definitely NOT to be included among them LOL). Thx again for the interest and I hope you're able to join).

can it be a cardboard cigar box like you see in gas stations or must be wooden?

JuliasAlteredArt 07/20/2011 #

BlueCrayons. For this swap the box can be made of any sturdy material, so long as it once once used to hold cigars. I think the kind you are talking about are reminiscent to the old school pencil boxes? Those are totally okay. If it's just a plain cardboard box, I'd ask that you try and find something else... Hope this helps :D
