About Me

I live in Alaska, USA. Avid reader (poetry, "literary," sci-fi, (mostly British) mysteries, Shakespeare, books about books, books about language)) and writer (poetry, and a 3x-weekly newsletter). Obsessed with watermarked and other vintage paper, fountain pens and inks. Enthusiastic origami folder, though not particular skilled at it.

Favorite Books

Let's say authors instead: David Foster Wallace, Mary Beard, Jack Gilbert, Gustave Flaubert, Heather McHugh, James Wright, John Berryman, Raymond Carver, Nick Hornby, William Matthews, Colin Dexter, Donna Tartt, Kevin Brockmeier...so many authors, so little time.

Favorite Music

Regina Spektor, Elliott Smith, Ben Folds, Rilo Kiley, Aimee Mann, Okkervil River, Aimee Mann, Radiohead, The Hold Steady, Alice in Chains, The Weakerthans

Obsessions

Stars, inter-stellar light, quantum entanglement, the sound leaves make in the dark as night sets in, the small hollow at the base of a woman's neck, hip bones, ruins of Roman colosseums, emotion expressed in the eyes, emerald flaws, solipsism, recurrence, multiple infinities, infinity plus one, ruined and abandoned places I once inhabited, the gathering of dew, the perfect arch of an ecstatic back, monkeys, the rare knowledge that something is happening for the last time when it is happening, stone, the quiet moments after, missing teeth, fine blonde hair on a tan thigh, the sound keyboards make in the movies, decaying flowers, walking in the pitch-black night, my biological father's face, epitaphs, dark matter, the technological singularity, Rothko canvases in the right light, caves, the sound of the sea in shells, forgotten ideas, the flow of auroral light, ligatures, spines and bowls, moonlight reflected on the wind-blown sea.

Comment: Thanks for the multiple books and especially thanks for the origami work -- the cat is so darling he won't be a book mark, he'll live on my bulletin board, and the flower is lovely. I'll keep my eyes open for the Jack Gilbert poetry and maybe the "words" books too.

Comment: Thank you for the moose Christmas card. I do not have one in my collection. I also loved the AK PC. -44 I just couldn't live there! The origami wreath is very cute, I can't wait to show it to a co-worker who does origami. You did not put the name of the swap on your card or envelope so it was difficult to find you to rate.

Comment: Love the poems, and the books you picked! It was my first time doing this sort of poem as well- I used phrases instead of words. You're right, it is a surprising challenge. You sit down and think, "easy peasy, the words are all there already, I just have to find them" but there are SO MANY words!
Response: I'm glad you enjoyed them! In addition to finding them surprisingly hard to come up with, I also kept messing up the actual blackout part. After doing my own I browsed around and saw many different, interesting ways to make blackout poems. I think I'll be making some more, possibly leaving little paths to guide the eye, which would help a lot!
