In my constant struggle for minimalism, I most appreciate useful things that I also find interesting or uncommon. I love functional "art." I gravitate toward the macabre (or it toward me) and am partial to Victorian styling, but I absolutely love silly shit like cheeseburger salt shakers and cute wind-up toys.
I'm a sideshow performer and a taxidermist. By nature I collect animal remains (bones, things in jars, pieces of leather, glass eyes, tools, and anything else you care to imagine). I like tiny skulls (bird, mink) that I can make into accessories. Vintage sideshow and circus images are fantastic.
I drink tea every day (none of that non-tea stuff made of herbs and lemon peel or whatever) and like trying new blends. I strongly prefer loose leaf, but I'm no tea snob.
Cooking is one of my favorite things to do. New recipes make me happy. Soup, sushi, Mexican, unique pastas, salads that aren't just leaves (pasta, cucumber, cabbage..), cooking with alcohol... all very good.
Journals are very useful to me, mostly small ones as I like to carry them around. They get used for sketches, words I want to look up later, lists, ideas, and all that.
Also, I'm mildly obsessed with crossword puzzles and board games.
I DON'T like gospel, new country, or pop. Aside from that I will listen to and enjoy most genres.
Oingo Boingo, The Tiger Lillies, Mac Lethal, Mindless Self Indulgence, Soulcrate Music, Hank Williams III, ska, underground hiphop, Tim Barry, Tom Waits, Of Montreal, Thievery Corporation, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Girl Talk, Kimya Dawson, Frank Zappa, KMFDM, Primus, Ska-P, George Clinton, The Avalanches
Keeping up with new movies isn't my strong point. I can hardly sit still for that long.
Natural Born Killers, The Forbidden Zone, The Prestige, and Back to the Future are among the only movies I'll watch repeatedly.
I don't have a TV any more, but I really like the look of old cabinet televisions.
I used to watch old Ren and Stimpy, Invader Zim, Cow and Chicken, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Most of what I make involves sewing. Wrist cuffs, lacy skull barrettes, etc. Sadly, I don't have a sewing machine.
I always have a use for fancy ribbons, lace, unique beads and buttons, scraps of interesting fabrics, thread, charms.. just having that stuff around forces me to create little projects in my head.
Making silly collages out of porn and food magazines is one of my favorite things ever. Anything with useful pictures, really. Every once in a while, I like to throw in some National Geographic.
I want to learn to make jewelry. I've made a couple necklaces for which I had to pull the construction of out of my ass, but I'd really like to know what I was doing.
Any jewelry containing nickel. I'm allergic to just about all metal that isn't silver. Actually, if it's something really awesome, I'd probably wear it anyway. I'll totally suffer for vanity.
Christian paraphernalia, although I like the Chick Publications cartoons because they're hilarious.
Scrapbooking supplies.
Candy or chocolate. I'm not really a fan of sugar. More importantly, I live in the desert, and it will melt in my mailbox. Yes, even in the winter. It's crazy.
...Anything that will melt in my mailbox (lip balm, soap, etc), unless it's sealed in a baggie.
Coffee.
I like books, and I don't get around to reading nearly as often as I want to. There's no particular genre that I stick to, but I'm not into the Harry Potter/Twilight business, or anything else fantasy related. Obscure fiction is good. I've enjoyed Bukowski and Tom Robbins, but anything educational is a bonus. I try to learn as much as I can.
