This swap theme is Sashiko embroidery which is from Asian culture used to bind layers of fabric together to add extra warmth. The designs are made of single running stitches and may vary from simple to complex to applique as well. You may use embellishments to your liking. Let's use our imagination.

Historically it was done white stitching on dark blue fabric, but there are lots of contemporary interpretations that break those rules of thumb! There are also traditional stitching patterns, which you can find in various books (i got mine from our local library - if your library doesn't have any, you can try inter-library loan). I'll check to see if there are any online sources for the patterns.

I like the idea of using dark blue fabric, but do you have to have the Sashiko needles?
