Description:

The Jewish holiday of Purim takes place this year on March 20-21. It is a festive holiday that is celebrated with gifts to charity, meals, masquerades, and the giving of food gifts to friends. The mitzvah (good deed) of mishloach manot (sending of portions) says that we must send two different foods to a friend during this joyous time.

For this swap, simply send two different food items to your partner. These items can be as simple as a candy bar and a bag of tea, or as extravagant as homemade pastries and a bottle of wine! (NOTE: You do not necessarily have to send a food and a drink, the above are just examples. You could send two different foods, or one food and one drink.)

Please take into account your partners allergies and likes/dislikes when choosing your two items. Please make sure to post this info in your profile or leave a comment on this page, so that everyone receives something they will enjoy! Only send items that are quality and that you would like to receive yourself. I do not want any disappointed swappers!

This swap is open to EVERYONE, regardless of religious preferences! International swappers are welcome. Hopefully this will not deter anyone, because this swap does not have to be heavy or cost a lot of money to send. Sending items as light as a candy bar and a bag of tea will fulfill the requirements!

You must have a rating of at least 4.8 to participate, with no recent or unexplained no-sends.

Let's have a good swap and a happy Purim!!!

I have this on my profile too, but I can't have any seafood's, or soy. I also shouldn't have any sugary things, but if I get them I'll just share with my hubby. Hubby loves things with mushrooms, and I love salty, crunchy cheese things. We don't require kosher, but it's always a plus! Great swap! Very festive!

One of the commandments on Purim is that we give food and gifts. And, Esther rocks! This is a WONDERFUL swap! Great idea! :)

OH! You can find some great info about Purim at this site: http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday9.htm

It sounds really great but I dont wish to be unusually difficult (I know I know, what changed?) but we are kosher so you might struggle to find it and if you did, it would probably cost the Earth :-( I have made some neat zines on Purim though, my first zine! Wooohoo!

Rachel...there are lots of products in the US that have a 'K', or 'U' symbol on the label or even says 'Galat Kosher' or just 'Kosher'...if your partner looks for it, it'll be on the back label. I even found items that now say 'Halal'...

It's getting easier to find pre-packaged goodies that say they are Kosher and lots of grocery stores in the States and Canada actually have Kosher foods in the 'Ethnic' isles.

Here's the 'Guide to Popular Kosher Symbols' http://kosherfood.about.com/od/guidetokosherfoodlabels/ss/symbols.htm

Just FYI! :)

sorry for my delayed response!

stacirose is right... kosher foods are quite common in the US (not sure about other countries though). i know my local market has its own kosher food section. and i know that i would be thrilled to receive items from Israel! so, i hope that if you are still interested you might reconsider :)

Ooooh you talked me into it :-)

Just a thought, the postage wont be a lot, maybe we could have two parters which would fulfill the mitzvah?

stacirose 01/25/2008 #

I had no idea about the number...I'd definitely be into that.

RachelB 01/25/2008 #

Well its sending giftS of food so I think two would be the minimum (be great if I could get away with JUST two!)

RachelB 01/25/2008 #

btw I have a Purim Zine, anyone want it?

do any other swap members have an opinion on adding another partner?

i am thinking, though, that i will just keep it simple with one partner, unless i am outnumbered!

Financial troubles have forced me to drop out of a number of swaps. I just wanted to let you know that I think this is a really nice swap, I wish I could stay in it. Happy swapping all, Crystal

I just have to leave a comment...I just did the Bible Journal #1 and one of my "topics" was Esther. This was great for me, because there, I learned about Purim and how that began all due to Esher and how she stood up for her Jewish people. This was the first time I learned of Purim and I was tickled that I knew what it was when I read your swap!

Enjoy every bit of it!

oh! sorry for forgetting to post easier: no need for kosher (i am a vegetarian, though eggs and dairy are ok).

Meadow 02/13/2008 #

Hello -- I am not Jewish so nothing for me needs to be kosher (unless you have soem cool kosher goodies, I would love to try them). My profile has my likes and dislikes as far as food and treats go.

I'm vegetarian - no gelatin products, please. More details in my profile
