Hey, I really want to join the swap but I haven't done any whimsy jar swaps yet, is there any basics I should know? And how should I wrap it so that it would arrive safely to the destination?

Hi there! Here is a link to a small tutorial on whimsy.Of course we arent going as crazy monetary wise as the tutorial suggests (theres no budget for the swap but still lol) but it covers the basics.
Regarding packaging, Id suggest wrapping the jar in tissue paper, then bubble wrap and packaging it into a box where the jar would be snug, with packaging peanuts or more tissue paper, or wadded newspaper works too. You can always ask the post office for more tips if you want to be extra sure =] Mark the box fragile as well.
I hope you enjoy the swap! Also, when my husband was overseas he served with a squad of all female Israeli commandos who he "wouldnt fight with anything less than two pistols, because they'd take the first one away and beat me with it while they were shooting me with the second one" His words exactly. lol =]

Also, you can decorate it in other ways than the tutorial suggests of course! If you google or search on flickr for whimsy jar, you can see images of some pretty neat ones =]

@Inthisrage theres no need to be afraid! as long as you do your best im sure your partner will be happy! I thought the themes may help alot, I know im always scared making whimseys for people I dont know, so their fave themes help ALOT lol

I'd like to join but I have a fear...what if we find our partner's themes too "difficult" or too specific to fill a whole jar? I would LOVE to join and I am sure I'd do a nice work but...I'd like to be totally sure there is no misunderstanding...

@vintervila the whimsey jar can be made to be exactly as the theme suggested, for example, I have dotees so someone may make me a jar with a dotee and dotee supplies OR it can be your interpretation on a theme, say someone made me a jar with a dotee and little accessories for that dotee, like a day in the life of a dotee jar. As long as you are not off course with the theme(ie: your partner cant figure out what theme you chose) you should be fine =] whimsey jars are all about imagination and whimsey!! just have fun and look at your partners profile for inspiration. You can always msg them to clarify theur themes and what they are looking for if you want to be sure! hope this helped =]

Dotee Dolls are an altered art doll created by Dot of http://dotslifeandart.blogspot.com. To make dotee dolls, all you need is your imagination and some fabric, yarn and beads =]people trade them like they do atc's artist trading cards. I have a question about the jar size. How big is 10 oz? We use different measures...Could you say what that is in deciliters or centimeters or for example how many grams of cherries is there in the jar? I have no idea what 10 oz is :( Thanks!

10 oz is about 283.5 grams of cherries =] im sorry, i should have clarrified that! ill try to find exact dimensions and update the swap, I hope that helped =]

I've just signed up, quite new and never done a whimsy jar swap before but this sounds like fun!

My 3 themes are:- - steampunk/Victoriana - Indian/oriental - any mix of things from my profile :-)

To me a standard size jar is one that you get 1lb of jam in, are we talking like that size or a little bit smaller? (need British guidelines! :-D )

This is going to be so much fun! I can't wait to fill my jar.

Themes for me would be: Batik Alice in Wonderland Steampunk

(Bonus themes are polka dots or matryoshka dolls/Russia

I'm so excited! I bought some jars. I hope I got the right size jars... I have 3 dl (300g) and 5 dl (500g). Both plastic and glass... It's not easy to find decent jars!!!

ok! here is a rather bad example of how to measure ur jars! (lol i apologize i cant find my tape measure and i will update as soon as i do!) take a regular white sheet of printer paper, fold it in half, and place ur jar onfront of it. the jar should only be aprox. 1 and 1/2 cm lower than the top fold of the sheet, as seen here (i measured the difference) Here

oops, @allofmyheart ul like it! its alot of fun!!! Check out ur jar according to the last comment i left, im not familiar with british guidelines however jam jars here are bigger than the jars required~! ill post exact measurements as soon as i can find my tape measure!!!!

@Johkup bahhh! Ill go google a converter for the measurements, as im not sure how to convert them, but for now, try the lame example on measring i provided in my previous comment, im not sure itll help much but for now at least to give an idea of the jar size =]

Different measurements makes this even more exciting ;) That picture helped a bit, thanks. Just one more question... then I promise to keep my mouth shut :) If the jar is bit shorter but bulky. Is that fine? I don't think we all can find same sizes in every country!

Now I found a good converter... I hope :) So 10 oz (US) is ~0,3 litres (3 dl) and ~10,4 ounce (GB)

@Johkup that is perfectly fine, some bulkier jars actually hold more than the jars shown. So you'd be doing more than the swap requires =]

and yes i do believe it is 3dl! =D as long as the label states 10oz or a bit more you are safe. u can take a picture of the size as proof in the case ur partner gets curious, im sure that wont happen however but just to be safe =]
