The Mything Link Γ’β‚¬β€œ a mini zine swap

Create a mini-zine about any aspect of myths, legends, folklore and/or fairy tales.

Your zine could include a story (or stories) you have written, inspired by Grimm; or your mythology-inspired artwork; or any combination of text and art. Look at an old story from a new perspective, or re-write a traditional tale in comic form. Illustrate scenes or motifs from classic tales. Write a series of character profiles for fairy tale archetypes, or reviews of revisionist fiction. The choice is yours!

Your interpretation of the theme can be straight or twisted (sender's choice!), so bear in mind that the zine you receive may have darker elements than you remember from the Disney versions. There was some dark stuff going on in some of those traditional myths and fairy tales!

Mini-zines should be a minimum of 8 pages folded down from A4/letter-size paper, as per standard mini-zine (click here for templates & folding guide). However, you are welcome to use a different binding, add more/larger pages, as you prefer, so long as the minimum is met.

Swap requirements

  • No late swaps on dashboard as of sign-up date
  • No recent/unexplained 1 or 3 ratings as of sign-up date
  • Send 1 mini-zine made by you to each of your partners
  • Mini-zines sent should be newly created, not something you have swapped previously
  • Minimum size of mini-zine as stated in swap description above
  • Send on time

I have to say that I am more than a little nervous about whether I can do this intriguing theme justice... Would something like helpful hints from a fairy tale character concerning an area of their expertise be okay for this? Like how to burglar proof your home written by the giant from Jack in the Beanstalk, for instance???? (That is just an example, not the subject I actually have in mind- but my idea is along those lines.)

I know that I would enjoy getting something like that Wanda. I am not the coordinator though.

Thanks, soyprincesa2. I sent a pm to TangleCrafts, to make sure she saw my message, so she will probably answer the question when she gets online again.I'm not quite sure which way my zine will go yet, but I AM feeling more comfortable with coming up with a zine subject for this already. :)

Just replied to your PM, @Wanda - your idea or along those lines would definitely be absolutely fine for this swap. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everybody comes up with! :)

I finally found my idea and got it solidified! YAY! I have just finished a draft of the text. So now just to form it into a zine, do some illustrating and finish it. :)

So by "more/larger pages" a size of around 9" by 4" would be okay? I'm not sure mine would actually be that size, but it is one of the formats I have been thinking about. ...Although probably my ideal size to work with on this would be a quarter sheet size - roughly 4.25" by 5.5". I'm fine with it, if you want to keep it to a smaller size though. Just let me know.

Wanda 10/15/2012 #

Now the one I've settled on, IF it meets the swap criteria is 3.5" x 5.5". If this is too big, just let me know. I will edit some more or something.

So long as your mini-zine has a minimum of 8 'standard' mini pages. any size is fine. :) Just be aware that if you send out a half-size (or other variation) zine you are quite likely to receive a 1/8th size zine in return. If it helps, I've been toying with a quarter-size format for my zine, although I may still revert to standard - we'll see!
