Description:

For this swap you take a page from the dictionary, pick a word, and illustrate it. The book page in the above is a nice example, but in this case the illustration must relate to the word and you must highlight the word and the definition. How you make the word stand out is entirely your choice. If you use a dictionary that's not in English, translate the word and the definitions.

Don't just put a sticker/magazine clipping on it and send it out. Put some work into it, make it nice to look at. All materials are A Okay. Don't fold the page when you send it out. Find (or make) an envelope in which it will fit without creasing.

This swap goes from A to Z. For this swap, we continue with the letter B. The page can't be larger than A4 size and can't be smaller than A5 size (give or take a little here and there, just no A6 and A3). Paper Size Chart.

When all swaps are done, we'll have our own illustrated (mini-)dictionary; all we have to do is bind it!

(Ratings of 4.8 and up. No recent 1s or 3s, I ban anyone I consider a risk. No unrated swappers.)

I've edited the deadlines of this swap.

Does it have to be an original dictionary page? Or can it be a photocopy enlarged to the right size?

Pouffia 08/13/2013 #

@zoev1975 it has to be an original dictionary page.

zoev1975 08/13/2013 #

I've actually just found a dictionary of the perfect size - can't wait to get started

dreamlily 08/23/2013 #

This is an awesome idea

beinguided 08/30/2013 #

please give me the dimensions in inches...I don't know what A4 or A5 is thanks

Pouffia 08/31/2013 #

A4 is the size of a standard sheet of paper used for printing (at home). A5 is half of that.

@beingguided maybe this will be helpful:

Paper size chart

I found a dictionary at a garage sale over the weekend. It was printed in 1912, which makes it 101 years old! The cover and binding are showing their age but the pages are in very good shape and the words. I love old, forgotten words. Who can argue with words like huggermuggery, beldame and weazen... The size of the dictionary is 6 3/4" by 4 3/4". Is that too small?

Pouffia 09/ 3/2013 #

@AynE that's just a little too small :)

beinguided 09/ 4/2013 #

Thanks for the paper size chart

Ky 09/ 4/2013 #

Oh no...that's too bad @AynE but what a great find!

zasa 09/ 4/2013 #

oooo my goodness - why I didn't saw this swap earlier? Any Chance to make up the first couple of letters?

AynE 09/ 4/2013 #

oh...crap...I was so excited by my find that I did my A word out of this dictionary. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Sigh. I will contact my partner and tell her that my page does not meet swap requirements and do a resend. Public confession is good for the soul...

@zasa if you want I will do a private swap with you for the A letter. I love the dictionary, my favourite book in the world...all the other books are in there, you just have to unscramble the words...

Pouffia 09/ 5/2013 #

A swapper named @Barbara was also looking for a private swap for the letter A. Maybe useful info for someone else who also wants to catch up.

@AynE oh that's really too bad. If your swap partner doesn't mind then don't feel obliged to. The size requirements are there so we don't end up with too much size difference in the pages we get, but if your swap partner doesn't mind there's no need for a resend.

Barbara 09/ 5/2013 #

You could take your partner's page and put a piece of 8 1/2 X 11 inch paper or card stock behind it, then put it in a plastic sleeve and start an alphabet binder. Even though they are different sizes they still can fit into the sleeve and put into the binder.

AynE 09/ 6/2013 #

my partner said that she probably wouldn't have noticed the size at all but appreciates me being responsible about it. I found a couple of size acceptable dictionaries to work with and the bonus is, I have my very own, special dictionary to make a pesonal dictionary for myself.

I love alliteration. My favorite type of poetry. I have long wanted to do the entire alphabet in alliterative poetry...what better use for decorated dictionary pages than alliteration. So this works out for both of us. A serendipitous situation indeed.

I's it possible to adhere this page to some backing for sturdiness or to maybe gesso the back? I'm worried about mine being too fragile to hold some paint or glue on its own. I usually attach these pages to some thing before adding any heavier medium. Thanks! Any additional thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated! I'm so excited about this swap!

Ky 09/10/2013 #

@audball55 I have been gessoing mine, all except the definition I am highlighting. You can still see the print underneath but it gives me a better surface to work on and is a bit sturdier.

Pouffia 09/11/2013 #

@audball55 feel free. It's yours to alter.

audball55 09/14/2013 #

@Ky and @Pouffia thanks!

beinguided 09/24/2013 #

I am wondering if it's acceptable as part of the altering process to make the page 81/2 x11 if the actual dictionary page is only half that size?

Pouffia 09/26/2013 #

@beinguided you're talking about making an A4 sized page out of an A5 sized page. That's perfectly fine.

AynE 09/27/2013 #

okay, I have this idea and was wondering what you thought about it. B = bark. I have some gorgeous birch bark from a tree that I found and because bark is not only bark as in tree bark it is also the sound a dog makes bark! I was thinking of using the tree bark and an drawing of a dog with the word bark in a sound bubble as the highlight. Too weird? Too far outside the swap parameters? I mean, I love the dictionary, my favourite book actually so to me doing a play on words would just be fun, but I thought I would check first. Thanks

AynE 09/27/2013 #

I think I am going to make the dog out of the tree bark, I like that image...

beinguided 09/27/2013 #

aynE...I hope you're my partner...sounds cool

Pouffia 09/28/2013 #

@AynE yeah that sounds like a cool idea. A play on words is fine as long as it doesn't deviate too much from the definition of the word, so you're good. :)
