Description:

Calling all penpals with imagination! Ever wanted to be someone else for a while, or receive a letter from an imaginary person? Love to write fiction? Have a lot of characters bouncing around in your head? This is the swap for you!

This is a ghost pals swap, where you take on the persona of a fictional character of your own imagination - perhaps a fairy in an enchanted forest, or a 16th century pirate, or an alien from another planet, or heck, even just someone with a more interesting life than you have! - and write a letter to your partner from their perspective!

You'll have one partner assigned to you, but you should end up with two imaginary penpals, since you'll send one letter, and receive one (from a different person) in return! This will probably require you to create two characters.

How it Works:

1) Partners assigned.

2) Create a character, and start writing a letter. Start the letter off with a vague salutation so your partner can reply back with a character of their own creation. For example: Dear Friend; Sir or Madam; Greetings! Do not (unless you are CERTAIN your partner won't mind) label your partner already with titles such as "lover" or "husband" or "daughter" or "Queen." Let them create a character to respond to you with; don't force them to write back as something they might rather not!

3) Send your letter off to your partner under his/her real name and address. Don't forget to enclose a note giving them a bit more background, your swap-bot name, and any ideas you might have!

4) Receive a letter from the person sending to you from an imaginary character you know nothing about.

5) Create a new character in response and write a letter back!

So, for example: I send off a letter from my first character, Lady Jasmine, a fairy princess from Knobby Tobby Land, to a distant cousin I know little about. Later, I get a letter from a cowboy gunslinger in the wild west writing home with news of his travels. I respond with a new character, Annie, a sassy southern belle who received his letter quite by mistake, but intends to give him a piece of her mind anyway.

;-) Get it? Let's play!

Feel free to list any genres you really don't care for, or a few ideas you have bouncing around in your head, or whatever!

Sorry, no newbies. 4.5+ ratings only. International pals welcome!

Fantastic idea!

So do I completely make up a character or do I have to write as like a character by someone else for example Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Katiad 06/28/2008 #

You completely make up a character. Don't use something from a book or movie!

This sound like great fun!

I have just atarted a group for "creative mail swapping" of this sort which maybe some of you would oike to join.

Hey, awesome, graydragon! I'll have to check that out!

Wow - 19 people so far! Nice!

So do we have to write the return letter by the 18th or how will that work?

Katiad 07/ 4/2008 #

There's no guidelines on writing the return letter - only the first. Hopefully, everyone intends to keep writing to their fictional pals for while (just like real penpals), but the swap is officially over after you write one letter to the one partner you're assigned to. :)

I'm not into the "Dark Arts" and nothing the children cannot see please but other than that just go where your muse takes you, hugs :-)
