Description:

The rules are very easy. Buy a cheap journal, notebook, or composition book and write directions of things to do on all the pages. Then send to your partner and they can follow the directions and literally trash or wreck the journal! For inspiration and further description on this, check out the original "Wreck this Journal" website: http://www.wreckthisjournal.com

A few examples from the book are: Cover this page using only office supplies, draw with glue, This page is a sign. What do you want it to say?, write backwards, poke holes in this page...

The whole idea is to make a journal book for your partner with instructions on each page. In the process, they will "wreck this journal" by following your instructions and not feel guilty for doing so!

Rules: All good swappers only and new swappers with a filled out profile. No recent no-sends. Don't spend much on a book or journal, since the end result is to trash it, but make it around 80-100 pages at least please. Because of the kind of journal book swap that it is, there is no need to decorate it much. After all, you may be instructed to drive over it!

I will give a long period of time to make this. Since there is no decorating involved and basically one-line instructions per page, it should move along quickly. It does not have to be tailored to your partners profile, so you can start on it now! Any questions, please ask.

I've worked my way through Keri's book so I'm looking forward to devising more ways to wreck another! Great idea

jenkosman 07/31/2008 #

Thanks for starting this! Should be great fun!!!

will this be international? Does anyone know how much it would cost to mail a composition book internationally?

bluecrayons 07/31/2008 #

would be awsome if we had to mail the book back all wrecked to its original owner

lace 07/31/2008 #

I thought about this book ...but I don't think i could do it.

craftygirl 07/31/2008 #

This is international.

Just letting everyone know that I will be on vacation from Aug. 3-10, so will not have a computer.

dukiegal 08/ 1/2008 #

that is very interesting. sounds fun

Susi 08/ 2/2008 #

I have this book, and I am having sooooo much fun with it! I never thought I could "wreck" a book, but I am doing it! I still have some pages to do in it, them I am going to mail to a friend to mail it back to me in a few months, so I can relive the fun!

greenplant 08/ 3/2008 #

I just can't wrap my brain around this one. Buying something just to turn it into garbage? Seems so wasteful... :(

MrsMJ 08/ 4/2008 #

It's not really ruining it if you look at each page as a way to inspire you to be as creative as possible.

By the way, check your local office supply stores or back to school shops for deals on composition books right now. I just got 6 of them for $1.50 at my local Staples store.

ozrob 08/ 5/2008 #

Could we possible make it just a little creative? like "draw an elephant on this page" or something?

ozrob 08/ 5/2008 #

also sending it back to the original owner, after we've done everything as instructed, would be cool! Maybe next time :o)

ozrob 08/ 5/2008 #

also here's a direct link to the website wreckthisjournal

ozrob 08/ 5/2008 #

and to the how to wreck a journal flickr group :o)

lynnemcf 08/ 6/2008 #

100 pages is a really big journal! I like the idea of this, but I cant come up with 100 ideas

ozrob 08/ 6/2008 #

what's a composition book? is it like an exercise book? like kids use at school? does it have lines or not?

MrsMJ 08/ 6/2008 #

Composition book has lines. It is one of those notebooks that typically have the splotchy black and white pattern on the cover and a big square box for your name, subject, etc.

ozrob 08/ 7/2008 #

ahhh ok, sounds like what we call an exercise book. thanks :o)

CrayonMom 08/ 8/2008 #

You can get composition books in nearly any color and pattern now, not just the standard black and white ones.

picxie 08/ 9/2008 #

what size journal are we to send? a5 or bigger??

hypnoticpeach 08/ 9/2008 #

this sounds like too much fun!! I'm starting this right away even though there are other things that should done!

sockerhamster 08/10/2008 #

This is gonna be so much fun! I have never ruined a book just because, even tho I have riped out pages from notebooks... Need to go buy a notebook first! :D

picxie 08/10/2008 #

i bought the perfect notebook for this today :) now..... 100 ways to wreck a journal.... might have to get the kids involved for ideas

iputfiresout 08/10/2008 #

What works better for this swap a compostion book or a spiral notebook. I have both sitting around and I like the comp book better as it is more study but want to make sure before I start coming up with my stuff and signing up.

iputfiresout 08/10/2008 #

one more thing, could we add our addy to the back maybe so that they can be sent back to us so we can see the work for all the ideas we came up with

picxie 08/10/2008 #

i thought the idea of the swap was to get someone else to destroy THEIR journal according to our instructions?? it could turn out quite expensive to send the journal overseas and then back again.. also, not everyone will do the journals in the same time frame? maybe we could have a flickr group where we post photos of the journals??

neopostretro 08/10/2008 #

iputfiresout, I would recommend the composition book because it is sturdier. If you have someone run over the journal with their car, a comp book will fair better than a notebook.

Just a note to whoever my partner is, you will not get the journal back. Sorry! My friend and I have a regular wreck journal that we send back and forth, so that is how it will be used. I can e-mail you pictures, though.

craftygirl 08/10/2008 #

In response to some of the comments, I'd like to say thanks for joining and having fun with this. I thought about doing the returning thing, but then I thought most people would like to keep the ones they receive. Maybe another time, another swap. I can't give an exact size of the journal to use since they are all different, but as a guideline, comp. books are about 9-3/4 inches x 7-1/2. Yes ozrob, you can be more on the creative side for these. Mostly, the idea is that you don't have to be "careful" with this, and you can do some damage, and have fun doing it!

needlewings 08/12/2008 #

I think the journal thing is a great idea, yet I think one on one where we participate in each others journal would some how be sharing the creativity to swap back. Am I missing the point or did I misinterpet of how this swap works? I guess it just seems strange to give some one an "instruction" journal and say ther you go!

picxie 08/14/2008 #

needlewings i think the purpose of this journal is to get you thinking outside of your box (or comfort zone).. i mean who in the right frame of mind would just go and do potentially destructive stuff to a journal :) but if someone else instructs you to do it, it becomes easier..

plus, it will be interesting to hear/see (maybe on flickr or google) how people interpret your instruction and take it that one step further... e.g. write/draw with your non dominant hand.. or cut a shape in the page.. most ppl will take that instruction as a prompt and further create the page... i guess for me it is about the inspiration, to see what others will come up with..

craftygirl 08/14/2008 #

I couldn't have said it better, picxie!

Starwatcher 08/16/2008 #

I think it would be easier to "wreck" a composition book than the "Wreck this journal" book I received from Amazon.com! It is so nicely bound - I can't bear to take it into the shower or mess it up - a comp book though - this could work - I'm signing up!

ditamirez 08/16/2008 #

I have started my journal! and i must say.....i think i will photocopy the pages to make extras for family/friends. then i can cut out the copies and paste into new book. it's a very fun process!

craftygirl 08/17/2008 #

I'm so glad everyone is having a great time with this swap! Once you start it's easy to come up with ideas since anything goes!

Guitartists 08/17/2008 #

My daughter has been helping come up with ideas for ours :D I'm just about done... only about 20 more pages to go.... it certainly requires some creativity to come up with as many ideas as it takes to fill a journal! I hope whoever my partner ends up being enjoys mine! :D

Invisible 08/17/2008 #

I love this idea!

somethinglefttogive 08/18/2008 #

I'm sad. I had this on my watch list and then missed signing up because of stupid Tropical Storm Fay... I live in south Florida. Its been a soggy and windy past 2 days. Would anyone be willing to do a private swap with me on this?? Or I guess I'll just hope for a round 2. -JH

cassiecards 08/19/2008 #

I can't believe I didn't see this one! So sad I didn't get to join!!!

Invisible 08/21/2008 #

umm mines a notebook (it says so even on the front) now im not sure if that WOULD be ok?? driving over it is not an instruction but for some of the entries a notebook would be easier and make more sense??? help
