Description:

For this swap you will make ONE 12.5" square string blocks for your partner.

Use 100% cotton quilting fabric and at least 6 different fabrics for each block. Use different colours and patterns to give a real scrappy look.

Here's what you do:

Cut a 13" to 14" backing square of plain fabric. This could be cotton/poly sheeting. A lighter colour is best.

Place your first strip across the diagonal, right side up. Place the second strip on top right side down, pin and sew. Open out and press. Work outwards to the corners using whatever scraps you have that fit. Press the whole block and trim to 12.5" square.

Do not put batting (wadding) on the back.

When you come to make your quilt arrange your blocks in a pleasing way and sew together using a 1/4" seam.

You can use batting (wadding) or not. I use 2oz polyester. This produces a smoother backing to the finished quilt and prevents any backing fabrics and seams from the blocks showing through the back fabric of the quilt.

Important: I use novelty strips (fruit, veg, Batman, etc) in my blocks so we can play I spy. Please state in your profile either 'I like novelty strips' OR 'I don't like novelty strips'. Check your partner's profile - it would be a shame to send blocks that won't be used. If you like novelty strips you might not get them in your blocks if your send partner doesn't have them.

I will check profiles - no unresolved 1's . No unexplained 3's. Reliable, dependable swappers with proven records only with at least 10 type 3s sent and rated.

do the strips have to be a particular width or within a certain width range? considering joining but would hate to break any unspoken rules.

You mean similar to these, right? http://katandcatquilts.blogspot.com/2015/09/october-block-drive-string-blocks.html

I have the same question as aspinks23~

Yes, exactly like those, but I use a 13-14" backing then cut it down to 12.5" because sometimes mine go a bit squiffy :(. I had problems adding a picture to the swap details but I'll try again. Just check on your partner's profile - some swappers only like thin strips, and some people don't want novelty fabric.

I strongly prefer NO novelty strips unless they are1 1/2" or narrower, and on that note I really don't need batting in mine and prefer skinny strings over fat ones. Sorry to be picky but I have several fat string blocks I will probably cut up for something else because they just stand out too much with the thin ones.

If my partner can only make wide string blocks, it's ok they won't go to waste. :)
