A letter from the past

Write a letter to your partner as if you are an historical figure. You should choose somebody whose character you can wear well, and whose background you know or have googled extensively. We're aiming for a certain amount of credibility. The person you choose does not have to be famous (for example, you may choose to write from the perspective of the first Guanahanian to see Columbus's ship). However, the figure you choose should be dead.

Tell your partner about your day, be it a monumental occasion or just an ordinary day in the life of a Spatan foot soldier, of Emperor Nero or of Harriet Tubman.

Words of warning:

• History is a nasty business! Most famous historical figures have caused misery in the world, it's true, but please stay away from the obviously terrible amongst them, bearing in mind that "obviously terrible" may differ from culture to culture. If in doubt, ask your partner.

• To avoid hurting your partner, please also refrain from entering the role of a saint, prophet, deity, avatar or apostle.

• This should go without saying, but no denial or defending of atrocities. By all means write about atrocities, but not in a way which attempts to condone or reduce them.
